UNESCO Heritage Sites in Uganda. The UNESCO heritage sites refer to the cultural/historical sites that stand out due to their special importance. These sites are appreciated globally and serve educational purposes. These heritage sites fall into cultural heritage sites and natural heritage sites.
Some of the UNESCO heritage sites in Uganda are;
Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO heritage site in southwestern Uganda. It is approximately 494.8km from Kampala about a 9 to 10-hour drive. The national park occupies the districts of Kanungu, Kisoro, and Kabale. The park is also home to a total of 22 habituated gorilla families in the four different sectors. These are all open for trekking to tourists. There are more than 2 that are open for the gorilla habituation experience.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park got its name from the dense vegetation which is a little bit challenging to navigate through. It is also for harboring almost half of the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas. This is one of the two destinations in Uganda where you get to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Bwindi contains bamboo and swamp forests. It’s thus a good spot for enjoying the environment full of several primates apart from gorillas. Tourists mostly come to this place to have a rare experience of gorilla trekking. It involves seeing the incredible mountain gorillas within their natural habitat.
Apart from the magnificent endangered mountain gorillas, Bwindi is also home to various wildlife species. These include primates such as olive baboons, L’Hoeist’s Monkeys, vervet monkeys, and a large population of bird species.
Cultural Encounters
Bwindi has great cultural significance. One of the reasons to justify that is the Batwa people. This was the first group of people that inhabited the Bwindi forest. They therefore are famous for their good and great connection to the forest and its resources. The government later evicted the Batwa out of the forest. The conservationists saw them as a threat to the gorillas.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Gorilla trekking is the top key activity that takes place in the park because of the presence of gorillas. Trekking involves going through the park’s thickets looking for the gorillas. You follow the lead of a guide and a ranger. Once you encounter the gorilla family that they assigned to you, you spend one hour in its presence. You’ll be with them at a close range(8 meters) as you take a few videos and pictures. A tour to see gorillas depends on the number of days you have for the safari. If you are only interested in gorilla trekking, a 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day gorilla tour will be perfect for you. However, if you have more days for a safari, you can for a 4-day tour or more days.
Bwindi has four sectors that are Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Rushaga. These all have different gorilla families you can trek.
