These are the only regions in the world where you can see wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
How far in advance should I book my gorilla trekking safari?
Because daily gorilla permits are limited and sell out quickly in peak months, we recommend booking 6–12 months in advance, especially for June–September and December–February. Last‑minute trips are sometimes possible in low season, but early planning gives you better permit availability and lodge options.
How physically demanding is gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking on uneven, often muddy trails at altitude, sometimes for 2–6 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, but Safari Vacations and Travel Services can request an easier group and arrange porters to help with your daypack and support on steeper sections.
What should I pack for a gorilla trekking and wildlife safari?
For gorilla trekking, you need sturdy waterproof hiking shoes, long trousers, long‑sleeved shirts, a light rain jacket, gardening gloves, gaiters (optional), insect repellent, and a small daypack. For the general safari, pack neutral‑coloured clothing, a warm layer for cool mornings, sun protection, binoculars, and a good camera with extra batteries and memory cards.
Is gorilla trekking safe for both visitors and the gorillas?
Gorilla trekking is strictly regulated, with habituated gorilla families visited by a maximum of eight trekkers for one hour per day. You will be accompanied by professional rangers and guides, who maintain a safe viewing distance, brief you on behaviour guidelines, and enforce health protocols to protect this endangered species and keep you safe in the forest.
What health and age requirements apply for gorilla trekking?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is usually 15 years, set by park authorities to protect both children and gorillas. You should be in generally good health, and anyone with flu‑like symptoms or contagious illness can be stopped from trekking to prevent disease transmission to the gorillas, so travel insurance and a pre‑trip health check are strongly advised.
