What to Pack for a Uganda Safari and Trekking Adventure

What to Pack for a Uganda Safari and Trekking Adventure. Planning a Uganda safari means packing smart. The country offers two very different environments, the open savannah and the dense rainforest, and you need gear that works well in both. Uganda’s tropical climate adds another layer of unpredictability. Even during the dry season, rain can pour without warning, especially in primate habitats like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Getting your packing right before you leave makes a huge difference on the ground.

    Choose the Right Colours

Start with your clothing choices, and begin with colour. Stick to neutral tones: khaki, olive, beige, and brown all work well. Avoid bright colours because they startle wildlife. White looks clean at home but turns dusty orange within an hour on safari. Stay away from dark blue or black clothing, too, as tsetse flies are strongly attracted to these shades, and their bites are painful.

Core Clothing for Safari and Trekking

What to Pack for a Uganda Safari and Trekking Adventure. Long-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers form the backbone of your wardrobe. They protect your skin from stinging nettles, thorny branches, and biting insects. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics so your body stays cool as you move. Cotton feels comfortable but holds moisture; synthetic blends or merino wool dry faster and work better on long hikes.

Pack a waterproof rain jacket or poncho. This is not optional. Rain arrives fast in the forest, and getting soaked five kilometres into a gorilla trek is miserable and cold. A compact, packable jacket takes up little space but provides essential protection.

Temperatures vary more than many travellers expect. Early morning game drives on the savannah can feel surprisingly cold, and Bwindi’s altitude — over 2,300 metres — means cool evenings are common. Bring a fleece or light sweater so you stay comfortable when the temperature drops.

For your feet, bring long socks and plan to tuck your trouser legs into them. Safari ants move in columns, and they bite hard. Mud enters your boots quickly on wet forest trails. Gaiters offer even better protection and are worth the small amount of extra weight. Complete your sock-and-boot setup before you enter the forest each day.

What to Pack for a Uganda Safari and Trekking Adventure. Finally, pack swimwear. Many safari lodges feature pools, and after hours of trekking through steep, humid terrain, a swim feels like a genuine reward.

    Gorilla Trekking: Specialist Gear

Gorilla trekking demands gear that goes beyond standard safari equipment. Your boots are the most important item. Choose waterproof hiking boots with solid ankle support and deep grip on the soles. Forest trails become steep, muddy, and uneven quickly. Lightweight trail runners simply do not cut it here.

Bring a pair of gardening gloves. This might sound unusual, but gorilla trekkers regularly grab branches, vines, and roots to pull themselves up steep inclines. Gloves protect your hands and give you a firmer grip. Many guides recommend them strongly.

Carry a face mask and wear it during your hour with the gorillas. Park rules require this. Mountain gorillas share enough of our biology that they can catch human respiratory illnesses. Wearing a mask protects them directly, and it also protects your permit fee — rangers will turn you back if you arrive visibly sick.

Use a daypack with a built-in or attachable rain cover to carry your water, snacks, and camera gear. Aim for at least two litres of water for each trek. Your pack will stay dry, and you will stay hydrated even on long days in the forest.

    Health, Hygiene, and Technology

Insect protection is non-negotiable in Uganda. Use a repellent with at least 30% DEET. Apply it to all exposed skin, including your neck and the backs of your hands. Mosquitoes and other forest insects carry diseases, so do not skip this step even if you do not see many bugs around you.

Protect yourself from the sun as well. Uganda sits close to the equator, and UV levels stay high even on overcast days. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarised sunglasses. These three items work together and make a real difference over a full day outdoors.

Build a practical first aid kit before you leave home. Include anti-malaria medication prescribed by your doctor, anti-diarrheals, oral rehydration salts, and blister pads. Blisters are the most common complaint on gorilla treks. Address them early before they slow you down.

Uganda uses UK-style Type G plugs with three square pins. Bring a universal travel adapter so you can charge your devices at any lodge. A power bank is also essential. Many lodges run on solar power, which limits charging time, especially on cloudy days. Keep your power bank full so your phone and camera are always ready.

Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom or telephoto lens. Wildlife viewing in Uganda often happens at a distance — birds perch high in the canopy, and rangers sometimes ask you to observe gorillas from a respectful distance. Good optics let you see detail without moving closer than you should.

    Documents and Money

Carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate at all times. Uganda requires it for entry, and authorities check it at the border and airport. Without it, you may face delays or be refused entry entirely.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Apply for your e-visa before you travel to save time on arrival.

For cash, bring US dollars printed after 2013. Banks and currency exchanges often reject older bills. Use smaller denominations — USD 1, 5, and 10 notes — for tips and small purchases. Larger bills, like USD 50 or 100, get better exchange rates in Kampala and other cities, so bring a mix.

Pack all of this carefully, and Uganda will reward you with experiences that stay with you long after you return home.
