About the 10 Days Uganda Birding and Gorilla Safari
The 10 Days Birding Uganda and Gorilla Safari combines two of Uganda’s most rewarding wildlife experiences: specialist birdwatching and an unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas. The journey travels through wetlands, tropical rainforest, savannah, lakes and the Albertine Rift highlands, giving birders access to remarkably varied habitats within a relatively compact itinerary.
Your adventure begins around Entebbe before visiting Mabamba Swamp for Shoebill tracking. From Lake Victoria’s wetlands, the safari travels west to the Kibale region, where forest and wetland birding around Bigodi provides opportunities to search for colourful species such as the Great Blue Turaco alongside primates and other forest wildlife.
You then continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where savannah birding and a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel add waterbirds, raptors and large African mammals to the experience. The journey eventually reaches Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorilla trekking and specialist Albertine Rift birding before concluding in Lake Mburo National Park.
This itinerary works particularly well for travellers who want more than a conventional Uganda wildlife safari. Birding is integrated throughout the journey rather than treated as an occasional activity, while the gorilla trek provides one of Africa’s most memorable wildlife encounters.

Detailed 10-Day Uganda Birding & Gorilla Itinerary
Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to Uganda

Welcome to Uganda, a country whose combination of tropical forests, wetlands, savannahs, lakes and Albertine Rift mountains makes it one of East Africa’s most exciting birding destinations. On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, our representative will meet you and transfer you to your accommodation.
Depending on your flight arrival time, you may begin with relaxed introductory birding around Entebbe. This provides an opportunity to become familiar with some of Uganda’s more widespread species before the specialist birding begins the following morning.
Meal Plan: Depending on arrival time
Key Activity: Arrival and optional introductory birding
Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Tracking – Transfer to Kibale

After an early breakfast, travel to Mabamba Bay Wetland, one of Uganda’s best-known locations for searching for the prehistoric-looking Shoebill.
Birding is normally conducted from a small canoe with a local wetland guide. Moving quietly through papyrus channels allows you to search for the Shoebill while also observing other wetland birds. Depending on conditions and season, the wider wetland can provide opportunities for kingfishers, herons, egrets, jacanas, weavers and other water-associated species.
Shoebills are wild birds and sightings can never be guaranteed, but Mabamba is one of Uganda’s most established Shoebill birding locations.
After the excursion, continue west toward the Kibale region. The journey introduces you to Uganda’s changing countryside before reaching the lush landscapes surrounding Kibale National Park.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Birding Focus: Shoebill and wetland birds
Kibale Forest & Bigodi Wetland Birding

Today is dedicated to the forests and wetlands of the Kibale region. The landscape here is particularly attractive to birdwatchers because forest, swamp, woodland, farmland and community-managed habitat occur close together.
Explore Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary with a local guide. One of the day’s most visually impressive potential sightings is the Great Blue Turaco, although the exact species encountered vary according to season, weather, movement and luck.
The walk is also rewarding for travellers interested in primates, butterflies, plants and community conservation. Unlike a rushed wildlife stop, today’s schedule allows your guide to spend time listening for calls, checking fruiting trees and exploring productive habitat.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Birding Focus: Forest-edge, wetland and woodland birds
Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Continue south toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, birding opportunistically along the route. The transition from the greener Kibale region into the open landscapes of Queen Elizabeth introduces an entirely different selection of habitats.
Queen Elizabeth is particularly valuable on a birding itinerary because wetlands, crater areas, open savannah, woodland and the Kazinga Channel occur within the same conservation landscape. Large mammals may include elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, warthogs and other savannah wildlife.
Depending on arrival time, enjoy an introductory game drive and begin searching the park’s open-country birdlife before proceeding to the lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Focus: Savannah birding and wildlife
Queen Elizabeth Birding, Game Drive & Kazinga Channel

Begin early when birds and mammals are particularly active. Your guide will combine wildlife viewing with birding, scanning grassland, bushes, woodland and wetland edges for species associated with Queen Elizabeth’s diverse ecosystem.
Later, enjoy a Kazinga Channel boat safari. The channel connects Lakes George and Edward and provides an excellent opportunity to observe water-associated birds from close range.
The cruise is equally rewarding for general wildlife. Hippos are commonly associated with the channel, while buffaloes, elephants and other animals may appear along the banks. For photographers, the boat provides a different perspective from a vehicle-based game drive.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Activities: Game drive, birding & Kazinga Channel boat cruise
Queen Elizabeth via Ishasha to Bwindi
After breakfast, travel through the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park toward Bwindi. The Ishasha landscape provides another opportunity for birding and wildlife viewing.
Ishasha is famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed. For birders, the drive is equally valuable because it connects different ecological zones and provides opportunities to stop when interesting species are encountered.
Continue into the increasingly mountainous and forested scenery surrounding Bwindi. Arrival here marks one of the most exciting transitions of the safari: from savannah ecosystems to one of Africa’s most important montane forests.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Focus: Ishasha wildlife and transition to Albertine Rift forest
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Today brings the signature primate experience of the safari: gorilla trekking in Uganda.
After breakfast, report to the designated Bwindi trekking centre for registration and a ranger briefing. You will then enter the forest with your ranger team to search for an assigned habituated mountain gorilla family.
The trek can vary considerably in length because gorillas move freely through the forest. Terrain may include steep slopes, forest trails and muddy sections, particularly following rainfall. Once your group reaches the gorillas, you normally receive up to one extraordinary hour observing them at close range while following the instructions of your ranger guides.
The experience can include watching adults feed, juveniles play, mothers care for their young and, depending on the family, the commanding presence of a mature silverback.
We strongly recommend hiring a porter for your gorilla trek. Porters can help with your daypack and provide valuable assistance on difficult sections of the trail while generating direct local employment.
Foreign Non-Resident: USD 800

Permit prices and availability should always be reconfirmed when booking.
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner
Main Experience: Mountain gorilla trekking
Full-Day Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After yesterday’s gorilla trek, today reveals another side of Bwindi. The park forms part of the Albertine Rift and is internationally important for bird conservation.
With your birding guide, explore suitable forest trails and edges according to your allocated Bwindi sector and current birding conditions. Your guide will use calls, habitat knowledge and recent observations to decide where to concentrate the search.
Depending on the sector and luck, birders may search for Albertine Rift specialties and other forest species including Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher and numerous sunbirds, flycatchers, greenbuls and other forest birds.
Rare species should always be considered targets rather than guaranteed sightings. This is especially important for highly localised or difficult forest birds.
Travellers whose main objective is the highly sought-after African Green Broadbill should discuss this with us before booking because the itinerary, season and Bwindi sector may need to be planned specifically around specialist birding priorities.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Birding Focus: Montane forest and Albertine Rift specialties
Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park

Leave Bwindi after breakfast and travel toward Lake Mburo National Park.
Lake Mburo provides another major habitat change. Its acacia woodland, open grassland, rocky areas, wetlands and lakes complement the forest birding experienced earlier in the safari.
Wildlife may include zebras, impalas, buffaloes, warthogs, giraffes and other species. Birding opportunities continue during the drive, with your guide stopping where practical for interesting sightings.
Depending on arrival time and your interests, enjoy an evening game drive, birding session or another suitable activity before settling into your lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Focus: Acacia woodland, savannah birds and mammals
Morning Lake Mburo Birding – Return to Entebbe

Begin your final day with an early birding session or game drive in Lake Mburo. Early morning is often rewarding because temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity can be higher.
After breakfast, begin the journey back toward Entebbe, with stops along the way as time permits. Your guide will coordinate the departure according to your international flight schedule or onward travel arrangements.
This concludes your 10 Days Birding Uganda and Gorilla Safari after exploring wetlands, tropical forest, savannah, lakes and the mountain forests of the Albertine Rift.

Birds to Look for During the Safari
Uganda’s birdlife is exceptionally diverse, but birding always depends on habitat, season, weather and chance. The following are examples of notable species or groups that may be targeted in appropriate habitats during this itinerary rather than a guaranteed checklist.
Why Combine Birding With Gorilla Trekking?
Bwindi makes this combination particularly natural. The same protected landscape that shelters mountain gorillas also protects extraordinary montane forest habitat. Rather than flying into Uganda only for a short gorilla trek, this itinerary lets you explore the country’s wider biodiversity.
Is This Safari Only for Expert Birders?
No. We can adjust the pace for keen photographers, first-time birdwatchers, mixed-interest couples or serious birders. Tell us your priority species and preferred birding intensity when requesting your quotation.
Accommodation on the 10-Day Safari
Accommodation can be arranged at comfortable budget, mid-range or luxury properties according to your preferred safari style. Final lodge selection also depends on availability and the exact gorilla trekking sector allocated in Bwindi.
Best Time for a Uganda Birding and Gorilla Safari
This safari can operate throughout the year. The best period depends on whether your priority is easier gorilla trekking conditions, bird diversity, photography, migrant species or quieter travel.
Uganda’s relatively drier periods, particularly around June to September and December to February, are popular for gorilla trekking because trails can be easier to negotiate. However, forest conditions remain humid and rainfall is possible at any time around Bwindi and Kibale.
Wetter periods can provide lush scenery, dramatic photography and rewarding bird activity. Birders should therefore avoid treating the conventional safari “dry season” as the only worthwhile travel period.

What to Pack for Birding and Gorilla Trekking
A quality pair of binoculars is essential for getting the most from specialist birding.
Use sturdy, comfortable footwear with reliable grip for Bwindi’s forest terrain.
A lightweight waterproof jacket and protection for cameras and optics are recommended.
Comfortable lightweight safari clothing in subdued colours works well for birding.
Bring spare batteries, memory cards and an appropriate wildlife lens if photography is a priority.
A small waterproof or rain-protected daypack is useful for forest walks and gorilla trekking.
See our detailed guide on hiking boots for gorilla trekking before packing.
Private Safari Transport
The tour is organised as a private safari using an appropriate safari vehicle with a professional driver-guide. A private vehicle is particularly valuable on a birding itinerary because it gives greater flexibility to stop for sightings, photography and productive habitats rather than following the fixed pace of a large group tour.
Longer transfers are also part of the experience. Travelling overland allows you to see Uganda’s changing landscapes while moving between wetlands, forests, savannah and highland habitats.

Who Is This 10-Day Safari Best For?
This itinerary works particularly well for birdwatchers who also want to experience Uganda’s mountain gorillas, wildlife photographers, couples with mixed interests and first-time visitors who want to see more of Uganda than a short gorilla-only tour.
Serious birders can ask us to increase birding time, adjust the Bwindi sector or replace general wildlife activities with additional specialist birding. Travellers whose main interest is wildlife can do the opposite and maintain birding as an important but less intensive part of the journey.
Responsible Birding & Gorilla Tourism
Responsible wildlife tourism is especially important in sensitive forest and wetland environments. During birding activities, we encourage guests to follow their guide’s instructions, avoid disturbing nests and wildlife, remain on designated routes where required and keep playback use responsible.
During gorilla trekking, all visitors must follow ranger instructions and the regulations communicated during the pre-trek briefing. These rules are designed to protect both visitors and the gorillas.
Hiring local guides and supporting gorilla trekking porters also helps ensure that tourism creates economic value for communities living around protected areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 10 Days Birding Uganda and Gorilla Safari private?
It can be organised as a private safari, giving you flexibility for birding stops, photography and your preferred travel pace.
Is the Uganda gorilla permit included?
It can be included in your final safari quotation. Because gorilla permits are date-specific and subject to availability, we confirm availability before requesting payment and securing the booking.
Will I definitely see a Shoebill?
No wild bird sighting can be guaranteed. Mabamba is one of Uganda’s established Shoebill locations, but sightings always depend on natural conditions and the birds’ movements.
Can I add chimpanzee trekking?
Yes. Kibale chimpanzee trekking can be added subject to permit availability. We can reorganise Day 3 to combine the primate experience with selected birding activities.
Do I need to be an experienced birder?
No. The safari can be adapted for beginners, photographers, casual nature lovers or experienced birders with a target-species list.
How difficult is gorilla trekking?
The difficulty varies according to the gorillas’ location, terrain and weather. Some treks are relatively short while others require several hours of hiking through steep or muddy forest terrain. Read our guide to gorilla trekking difficulty.
Can this safari be upgraded to luxury?
Yes. We can use higher-end lodges in Entebbe, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Lake Mburo while keeping the core itinerary and private guiding structure.
Can you customise the route?
Absolutely. The itinerary can be adjusted around your target birds, preferred gorilla trekking sector, accommodation style, fitness level, international flights and available travel time.
