2-Day Uganda Gorilla Tracking Safari Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Two days can work well for travelers with limited time because Kigali provides relatively convenient road access to southwestern Uganda. Day one is used for the cross-border transfer to the Bwindi area, while day two includes the gorilla trek followed by the return journey to Kigali. Your existing itinerary estimates roughly four to five hours between Kigali and Bwindi, depending on the route and conditions.
The published itinerary includes a Uganda gorilla trekking permit, accommodation, meals specified in the program, transportation, fuel, bottled drinking water and the services of an English-speaking driver-guide. Pickup and return can be arranged in Kigali. International flights, visas, tips, personal expenses and optional activities are generally excluded.
The main gorilla trekking experience takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda. The exact trekking sector should be coordinated with the confirmed gorilla permit and accommodation. Travelers starting from Kigali commonly access southwestern Uganda through the Rwanda-Uganda border before continuing to their lodge near Bwindi.
The journey commonly takes approximately four hours for suitable southern Bwindi routes, although actual travel time depends on the trekking sector, border formalities, road conditions and stops along the way. Northern Bwindi sectors can require a longer journey from Kigali.
After your trekking group locates its assigned habituated gorilla family, standard gorilla trekking generally allows up to one hour with the gorillas. The forest hike itself can take considerably longer because gorillas move naturally through the forest and their location varies from day to day.
The trek can range from relatively manageable to physically demanding. Bwindi has natural rainforest terrain that can be steep, muddy and slippery, and the time needed to locate the gorillas varies. Comfortable hiking boots, long trousers, rain protection, drinking water and reasonable walking fitness are recommended. A porter can also assist with your daypack and difficult sections of the trail.
Yes. The itinerary can end with a transfer back to Kigali, including a drop-off at your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport. Because the return follows the gorilla trek and an international border crossing, travelers planning to fly on the same evening should choose a sufficiently late departure and allow a sensible buffer for trekking, road and border delays.
