3 Days Gorilla Habituation in Uganda From Kigali

Your driver-guide will meet you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali after breakfast. After a short safari briefing, begin the scenic drive across the Rwanda–Uganda border through either the Katuna or Cyanika border post. The 3 Days Gorilla Habituation in Uganda From Kigali journey takes approximately 4–5 hours, passing through Rwanda's rolling hills before entering southwestern Uganda. Along the way, enjoy beautiful countryside views, local villages, terraced farms, and volcanic landscapes.

After completing immigration formalities, continue to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the only sector where the Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch or an early dinner, depending on your arrival time. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the next day's adventure.

After an early breakfast at your lodge, transfer to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park briefing point with your packed lunch and drinking water. Meet the ranger-guides for registration and a briefing about the gorilla habituation experience, trekking procedures and appropriate behaviour in the forest.

You will then enter Bwindi with an experienced team of rangers and trackers in search of a semi-habituated mountain gorilla family. The trek can take several hours and may involve steep slopes, thick vegetation and uneven forest trails.

Once the gorillas are located, the habituation experience allows you to spend up to four hours with the gorilla family, compared with the shorter viewing period on a standard gorilla trek. During this time, observe the gorillas feeding, resting, grooming, playing and interacting while learning about the ongoing habituation process from the field team.

After this remarkable encounter, trek back through the forest and meet your driver-guide. Return to your lodge for a well-earned rest, dinner and overnight.

Stay: Gorilla Valley Lodge

This is the heart of the safari. After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing session, where park rangers assign trekking groups based on gorilla family locations and trekker fitness levels. Armed with your gorilla trekking permit, walking stick, and a packed lunch, you’ll set off into the forest accompanied by armed rangers, trackers, and guides.

The trek itself can range from a relatively easy one to two hours to a more strenuous five to eight hours, depending on where the gorilla family has moved to that day, as Bwindi’s terrain is steep, dense, and often muddy. Porters are available to carry bags and offer a helping hand on difficult sections, and many travelers choose to hire one both for support and to contribute to the local community.

Once your group locates the gorillas, you’ll have a magical, closely regulated one hour in their presence, watching them feed, play, and interact as a family unit just a few meters away. Afterward, you’ll trek back out of the forest, return to your lodge for a well-earned hot meal and rest, and perhaps spend the evening reflecting on the experience or enjoying the lodge’s surroundings.
