What Is Gorilla Tracking?
Gorilla tracking is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime adventure. It takes you deep into the lush forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, as well as Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. It involves hiking through dense vegetation, often along trails cleared by machetes. You do son in search of the rare and endangered mountain gorillas.
The experienced guides lead the activity, who navigate through varying terrain—muddy paths, steep slopes, and areas with insects. Despite the challenges, every step becomes worthwhile the moment you come face-to-face with gorillas in their natural habitat.
Types of Gorilla Trekking
Safari Vacations and Travel Services offers two main types of gorilla trekking experiences: the standard gorilla trekking and the gorilla habituation experience.
1. Standard Gorilla Trekking
The standard gorilla trek is the most common experience, where visitors spend one unforgettable hour with a mountain gorilla family after locating them. This trek varies in duration, typically lasting 1 to 6 hours. The amount of time depends on the gorillas’ movements and location. The Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board allow only eight visitors to visit each gorilla family per day.
In Uganda, the cost of a standard gorilla trekking permit is $800 for foreign non-residents. It also costs $700 for foreign residents, $500 for citizens of other African countries, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens
In Rwanda, standard gorilla trekking is more expensive due to Rwanda’s premium tourism positioning. A Gorilla permit costs $1,500 for foreign non-residents and $500 for foreign residents and African citizens. It also costs USD 200 for East African citizens.
Rwanda currently does not offer the gorilla habituation experience. In Uganda, many visitors choose the standard trek due to its affordability compared to the habituation experience. However, growing awareness of habituation has increased the number of tourists visiting Bwindi for this extended gorilla encounter.
2. Gorilla Habituation Experience
The gorilla habituation experience offers a more immersive encounter with mountain gorillas. During this activity, visitors join a team of researchers and expert guides in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They track and observe a semi-habituated gorilla family as they gradually get used to human presence.
Unlike the standard trek, the habituation experience allows visitors to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas. This explains the higher cost of the permit. Gorilla Habituation permits cost $1,500 for foreign non-residents. They also cost $1,000 for foreign residents and citizens of other African countries. Additionally, the permit costs UGX 750,000 for East African citizens
To ensure a low-impact and intimate experience, UWA allows only four participants per gorilla group each day.
Where to Go for Gorilla Trekking with Safari Vacations and Travel Services
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is popular for its remarkable biodiversity and dense tropical forests. It is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, distributed across four key trekking regions. These are: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the northeast, and Nkuringo and Rushaga in the south. Each region hosts several habituated gorilla families, making all areas suitable and accessible for gorilla trekking.
When planning a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi, it is important to know which region your permit is issued for, as this determines where you will stay. We arrange accommodation for you based on proximity to the assigned trekking sector.

Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park, in northern Rwanda, is a popular conservation area dedicated to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas. Also known as Parc des Volcans, it forms part of the Virunga massif—a chain of volcanic mountains that spans Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park takes place in specific sectors, including Sabinyo, Kinigi, and Bisate. When planning your trek, it is important to consider these sectors, as they determine your transportation logistics, permit allocation, and suitable accommodation options.
For expert guidance on planning a seamless Volcanoes National Park gorilla safari, Safari Vacations and Travel Services is available to assist with all the details, ensuring your trip is well-organised and tailored to your needs.
When to Book and Purchase a Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda or Rwanda
It is advisable to secure your gorilla trekking permit in Uganda or Rwanda 3 to 6 months in advance. This should be the case, especially if you plan to travel during the peak or high season. Booking early ensures that permits are available for your preferred trekking dates, as they are limited and highly competitive in both countries.
For assistance with planning your trek and arranging your permits, Safari Vacations and Travel Services is ready to guide you through the entire process—right from selecting your trekking date to organising the rest of your safari for an unforgettable gorilla experience.
Keep in mind that gorilla trekking with Safari Vacations and Travel Services is only possible once you have secured a valid gorilla permit. This permit grants you a unique one-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas and includes park entry fees, security, as well as the services of an experienced guide and armed ranger.
Rwanda’s Discounted Gorilla Permits
Rwanda offers a discount on gorilla permits during the low season, typically from March to May and October to November, a benefit that Uganda does not provide. These discounted permits were introduced in 2017 and continue to be available to tourists who meet specific requirements.
To qualify for the reduced permit rate, travellers must book at least three nights in either Nyungwe National Park or Akagera National Park. This encourages visitors to explore more of Rwanda’s diverse attractions while enjoying savings on their gorilla trek.
The discounted gorilla permit costs USD 1050 per person. The price includes park entry fees, security, and one hour with a mountain gorilla family. It also includes the services of experienced guides and armed rangers.
What are The Chances of Seeing Mountain Gorillas
The likelihood of seeing mountain gorillas during your trek is exceptionally high—about 99%. Many tourists often wonder whether a single trekking session guarantees a gorilla encounter. The answer is almost always yes! Each morning before trekkers set off, a skilled team of trackers goes ahead into the forest to locate the gorilla families. They check where the gorillas were last seen, follow their movements, and confirm their current location.
Once the trackers identify a gorilla group, they communicate the information to the park headquarters and your assigned ranger via radio. Your trek begins from the point where the gorillas spent the previous night, and you follow their trail through the forest until you reach them. This careful coordination ensures that visitors have an unforgettable and successful gorilla encounter.
What to Consider When Booking a Gorilla Safari
Booking a gorilla safari with Safari Vacations and Travel Services requires thoughtful planning to ensure you enjoy the most memorable experience possible. One of the most important factors to consider is planning well in advance. Gorilla trekking is an extremely popular activity in both Uganda and Rwanda, making permits highly competitive and sometimes difficult to secure on short notice.
Early Planning
We recommend that travellers begin preparing at least six months before their intended travel date. Start by selecting your preferred destination and reading about gorilla trekking—understanding the rules, what to pack, and the best time to visit. Once you have a clear idea of your preferences, reach out to us so we can assist you in organising your entire trip.
Early planning not only guarantees your gorilla permit but also allows smooth arrangements for transportation, accommodation, and other logistical details. It further increases your chances of securing the best lodge options and enjoying favourable rates. With proper preparation and expert support, your gorilla trekking adventure will be seamless, rewarding, and truly unforgettable.
Your Physical Fitness
Gorilla trekking involves walking through unfamiliar and often challenging terrain that becomes tougher as you move deeper into the forest. To prepare, it is advisable to engage in light physical exercises before travelling to Uganda or Rwanda. This helps you maintain a steady pace during the trek, avoid slowing down the group, and reduce the risk of health-related complications.
The minimum age for trekking is 15 years, both in Uganda and Rwanda, but there is no upper age limit as long as you are fit enough to participate. For travellers who may not manage the hike, sedan chairs are available to ensure everyone—including those with limited mobility—can still enjoy the gorilla experience.
Simple activities such as jogging, stretching, and breathing exercises can significantly improve your endurance and prepare you for the adventure ahead
