The Mukiza Gorilla Family
The Mukiza gorilla family, led by the dominant silverback Mukiza, inhabits the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This family was established in May 2016 following the division of the parent Kyaguliro group. The Mukiza group is a significant focus of gorilla research conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA). Currently, the group comprises 13 individuals, including 1 silverback, 1 sub-adult, 6 adult females, 2 juveniles, and 3 infants.
The Uruzogo Gorilla Family
This family consists of 17 individuals, including 1 silverback. It has gained popularity among tourists due to the playful behavior of its members, providing entertainment for visitors. This group was introduced in 2011.
The Bitukura Gorilla Family
This family has 14 individuals including four silverbacks, it was habituated in 2007. The family has four Silverbacks, four adult females, two juveniles, three infants, and one baby. Initially, the family group had 24 members, later they split due to several fights and disputes in the family, some individuals decided to move and make their own family in other areas of the forest.
The Kyaguliro Gorilla family
This gorilla family group, initially reserved for research purposes and hence not commonly visited, comprises 20 individuals.
Following the untimely demise of the Silverbacks due to a lightning strike, we divided the group into two.
With only one young silverback remaining, a mature silverback from the Bitukura family attacked it, ultimately resulting in the family division into two.
Consequently, the Kyaguliro group is led by Rukara with ten members including; one silverback, three adult females, two blackbucks, two juveniles, and two infants.
