Can I trek chimpanzees without a permit in Kibale National Park?

Kibale National Park is Uganda’s primary chimpanzee trekking destination, hosting over 1500 chimpanzees. Each day, two chimpanzee trekking sessions happen in this forest, that is, in the morning and afternoon.

Chimpanzees live in communities under the headship of an alpha male whom the chimpanzees elect democratically. The chimpanzee community may have over 100 members. To allow the public to do chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park, the community is first habituated for an unknown time until proven ready. Chimpanzee habituation is a process by which a team of researchers follows a wild chimpanzee community. They do so to help them get used to human presence without altering their nature.

Each day, the chimpanzee community split into smaller troops to feed. Tourists visit These chimpanzee troops daily, but a maximum of 6 people are allowed to visit each session. Currently, Kibale National Park has about 15 fully habituated chimpanzee communities.

The park regulates the number of people who do chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park. Thus, you can not trek chimpanzees without a permit in Kibale National Park. It’s one of the ways to minimize the effects of mass tourism on the environment. Chimpanzees’ diet is mainly vegetables. However, during the extreme dry seasons, the chimpanzees may feed on smaller primates like the monkeys.

You do not only break the chimpanzee conservation laws. But, you also inconvenience other tourists, especially when the number exceeds the maximum limit.

Chimpanzees are some of the most endangered primates in the world and are highly protected, plus their habitats.

Other than the chimpanzees, Kibale National Park hosts other chimpanzee primates. The park hosts over 13 primate species plus chimpanzees. Some other primates living in the Kibale forest include blue monkeys, olive baboons, pottos, grey-cheeked mangabey, bush babies, black and white colobus, and others.

Birding in Kibale National Park is exceptional, where more than 325 bird species and residents of this forest are recorded. During chimpanzee trekking, you may spot birds like blue-headed sunbirds, African Pitta, yellow-spotted nicator, blue-breasted kingfisher, Abyssinian ground thrush, and others.

Chimpanzee conservation still requires more funding. It is from the sale of chimpanzee permits that some funds go for park maintenance.

A portion of the money collected from selling chimpanzee permits is shared with the community around Kibale National Park to support their projects. Sometimes, the chimpanzees stray into the community and spoil their crops, which requires compensation.

What Guarantees Seeing Chimpanzees In Kibale National Park?

Chimpanzee viewing in Kibale National Park is a sure deal since the park has over 1500 chimpanzees. These chimpanzees are first habituated until proven ready for public viewing.

A team of ranger guides wakes up earlier than others to trace where the chimpanzee community may have nested and estimate their possible hangout spot. Although chimpanzees split into troops to feed, they do not go far from their nest unless someone attacks them.

You hear the chimpanzees before finding them because of their means of communication. These include hooting and beating the tree trunks to warn others of your presence.

Ranger guide leading tourists request your help searching for the chimpanzees by following clues like freshly fed on foliage, footprints, fresh dung, and much more. When you locate such clues, you are requested to slow down on what you are doing. Then, you’ll have to pay much attention to observing to spot these chimpanzees.

Is Chimpanzee Trekking In Kibale National Park Safe?

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is safe. Kibale National Park is a tropical rainforest with ancient thick trees resembling each other. However, you are safe as long as you are in the company of the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide.

Two ranger guides lead each chimpanzee trekking session in Kibale National Park. One holds a machete while another carries a rifle in case of an emergency.

While packing for chimpanzee trekking, ensure you carry the right gear. This will ensure that your body is safe from the harsh conditions in the jungle.

Other Uganda security agencies are on the ground to offer extra protection to the forest, its dwellers, and visitors. These bodies help to keep law and order in and around Kibale National Park in conjunction with the ranger guides.

As a tourist, you must follow the guidelines of chimpanzee trekking given by the ranger guides during briefing, violating them may rub badly on the chimpanzees and cause them to charge.

When angry, the chimpanzee hoots beats the tree trunks, walks on one leg, grabs grass around them, throws fruits, and much more. Upon observing such odd behaviors, do not panic. Rather, wait for the ranger guide to establish the cause of the matter. Sometimes, it is a power struggle, an attack from another community, trying to tease visitors, and much more. You need to be calm and do as instructed by the ranger guide. Only one hour is allowed with the fully habituated chimpanzees, so make good use of it.

Is Chimpanzee Trekking In Kibale National Park Difficult?

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is not so tiresome. Kibale National Park is highest in the northern tip, about 1590 meters above sea level. The general topography of the Kibale forest is more leveled with less undergrowth but with huge trees with large trunks.

The walk to find the chimpanzees is usually on the trails constructed by regular visitors to Kibale National Park. You must wear the right chimpanzee trekking gear to protect your body from the stinging insects buzzing in the jungle.

Finding the chimpanzees during the dry season is quicker since they feed and nap closer to the ground. The dry season is normally June to September and December to January. Although Kibale is a rainforest, less rain during the dry season makes the trails passable.

During the wet season, which is March to May and November, the Kibale forest may receive rains up to about 1700 mm annually. This makes the trails quite slippery and soggy. Less sunlight is let in through the dense canopy to the ground during this time.

The mean temperature of Kibale National Park is about 14 degrees centigrade and 27 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperature in the southern part of the park, where the terrain drops down into the hot rift valley floor.

When Is The Best Time To Book Chimpanzee Trekking Safari for Kibale National Park?

Kibale National Park and chimpanzee trekking tours are open throughout the year. Still, the dry season is better because the conditions in the forest favor the free movement of both the chimpanzees and other forest dwellers. The atmosphere of the Kibale forest favors the growth of more fruits and vines that the primates feed on. Thus, living in this forest during the dry season is more enjoyable because you can trace them easily.

The dry season is usually June to September and December to January. The wet season keeps most primates in the tree as they fear water. The wet season usually is March to May and November, and even the temperatures in the forest drop to as low as 14 degrees centigrade. More undergrowth is protruding to cover the trails, making it more challenging to find the chimpanzees.

During the dry season, demand for Kibale chimpanzee permits is high, creating scarcity at the last minute. The wet season chimpanzee permits may not be in high demand but require booking because their status may change without notifying you. Possessing a chimpanzee permit in advance is best, no matter the season you travel.

What Are The Rules Of Chimpanzee Trekking In Kibale National Park?

No use of flash photography during chimpanzee trekking. It stresses them, and this may cause the chimpanzee to go into hiding.

Avoid eating near the chimpanzees because you may tempt them. Consequently, they may grab and share your eats.

No feeding the chimpanzees because they are wild animals that need to search for their food.

The park forbids dumping garbage in the forest during chimpanzee trekking. This changes the nature of the environment on which these primates depend.

Follow the instructions from your ranger guide.

Never enter the forest without an arranger’s guide, even if you are familiar. The forest also has other forest inhabitants that may view you as another prey.

Ask your ranger guide to dig about 30-meter-deep holes in case you wish to do a long call and cover up beyond recognition.

Do not enter the forest without a ranger guide during chimpanzee trekking because you may encounter other forest dwellers who are not used to human presence, like the forest elephants.

Never provoke the chimpanzees because this may irritate them, causing them to rage.

Volunteer and stay behind if you catch or have signs of a contagious infection like flu, COVID-19, or more.

You have only one hour with the chimpanzees when you trace them. This is to minimize the effects of human presence in the wilderness.

you should not mimic or Imitate the chimpanzees. This is because you may not know what you are communicating.

The age limit for chimpanzee trekking is 12 years and over, as it is quicker for a child of this age and over to withstand the presence of these primates. Even walking in the jungle may be tiresome to a child below this age.
