Best Photography Spots for Wildlife in Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, is a paradise for wildlife photographers. With its diverse ecosystems, ranging from savannah and woodlands to riverine forests and wetlands, the park offers countless opportunities to capture stunning shots of African wildlife in their natural habitat. Here are the top photography spots in Murchison Falls for both amateur and professional photographers:

    1. Paraa Area

The Paraa area, located in the northern section of the park, is known for its high concentration of wildlife and open grasslands. Early morning and late afternoon game drives in this region provide perfect lighting and increased animal activity. The flat terrain allows for wide-angle landscape shots as well as close-ups of iconic species. The highlights are Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes, and scenic savannah landscapes.

    2. Nile River Banks

The stretch of the Nile running through the park creates a lush green corridor, attracting a variety of animals and birds. Boat cruises along the river offer unique angles to photograph wildlife as they come to drink, bathe, or hunt. Patience and a zoom lens are key to capturing dramatic moments along the water. Here, highlights are Hippos, crocodiles, elephants at the water’s edge, and birdlife.

    3. Murchison Falls Viewpoint

Photographing the falls themselves is a must. The viewpoint above the falls allows you to capture the explosive power of the Nile as it squeezes through a 7-meter gorge. Sunrise and sunset offer dramatic lighting, and the spray often creates rainbows—perfect for artistic landscape photography.

    4. Delta Point (Albert Nile Delta)

This tranquil area is where the Nile fans out into Lake Albert. The delta is rich in birdlife, especially in the early morning. For bird photographers, this is one of the best places in Uganda to spot the rare shoebill stork. A guided boat ride is the best way to explore the area for bird and wildlife shots.

    5. Buligi Game Tracks

Buligi is among the most game-rich areas of the park, offering excellent opportunities to photograph predators and prey alike. The contrasting colors of the grasslands, acacia trees, and the Nile in the distance make for compelling compositions. Cloudy skies or dramatic sunsets often add emotion to landscape and wildlife shots.

    6. Rabongo Forest

This lush forest area in the south of the park offers a different feel compared to the savannahs. It’s ideal for photographers interested in smaller subjects like primates (especially baboons and colobus monkeys), reptiles, and forest insects. The filtered light through the canopy creates opportunities for artistic, moody shots.

    7. Top of the Falls Hike Trail

This short but exhilarating hike takes you to several vantage points above the falls. Here, you can photograph the Nile from above as it thunders through the narrow gap. Long exposure photography works well here, as does aerial-style composition for capturing the vastness of the gorge.

    Photography Tips for Murchison Falls

Golden hours: Shoot during sunrise and sunset for the best lighting.

Lenses: Bring a telephoto lens for wildlife, a wide-angle lens for landscapes, and a fast lens for low-light conditions.

Stability: Use a monopod or bean bag for steady shots during game drives.

Respect nature: Always keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing animals for a shot.

Local guides: Consider hiring a guide who understands animal behavior and park regulations—they can help you get the perfect shot safely.
