    Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits in the southern part of Uganda. It draws thousands of visitors every year who come to see mountain gorillas up close. The sector lies within the southern hemisphere of the park. Travelers can reach it from Kigali through the Cyanika border in Kisoro. Along the way, the scenery stuns visitors at every turn. Rolling hills, thick forest, and volcanic peaks greet you long before you arrive. This guide covers everything you need to know about trekking and the gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga.

Getting  to Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi and What You See Along the Way

The road to Rushaga takes you through some of Uganda’s most beautiful landscapes. As you drive through Kisoro District, you get clear views of the Virunga Volcanoes. Two of these are Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura, both found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Furthermore, the route passes by Lake Mutanda, a stunning lava-dammed lake that reflects the surrounding mountains. Nearby, Lake Bunyonyi offers another breathtaking stop. Bunyonyi is the second deepest crater lake in East Africa. On a clear day, you can also spot Lake Tanganyika from certain high vantage points. In short, the journey to Rushaga is a rewarding experience on its own.

What Is Gorilla Habituation and Why Does It Matter?

Many visitors confuse gorilla trekking with gorilla habituation. However, the two experiences are quite different. Gorilla trekking lets you spend one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family. Gorilla habituation, on the other hand, lets you spend up to four hours with a wild gorilla group that researchers are still training to accept human presence. This process takes two to three years to complete. During this time, researchers, rangers, and trackers visit the gorillas every single day. Gradually, the gorillas grow comfortable around humans.

Rushaga Sector and Nkuringo are the only two sectors in Bwindi where visitors can take part in the habituation experience. Each habituation session allows only four visitors at a time. You join the research team and experienced trackers in the forest. Together, you observe the gorillas in their natural behavior. You watch them feed, play, groom, and rest. Moreover, you learn directly from the researchers about how gorillas think and how they interact with each other. This is truly a once-in-a-life time chance that very few people in the world ever get.

The Five Gorilla Families of Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi

Rushaga Sector is home to five habituated gorilla families. Each one has its own unique story, personality, and history. Below is a breakdown of each family. Note that family sizes listed reflect counts as of January 2018 and may have changed since then.

    Nshongi Family — 26 Members

The Nshongi family is one of the largest habituated gorilla groups in all of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Notably, researchers named the family after the Nshongi River, which flows through the park. The name itself carries deep meaning. Specifically, “Omushongi Gwobuki” translates to “honey,” a reference to the deep brownish color of the river’s water.

Furthermore, the Nshongi family officially opened to visitors in 2009. At that time, it was the largest habituated family in the entire park, boasting 36 members. Impressively, these included three silverbacks and seven black backs, all living together in peace. Over the years, however, some members chose to break away and start their own groups. As a result, the family size reduced to 26 members. Despite the split, Nshongi remains one of the most impressive gorilla families you can visit in Rushaga.

    Kahungye Family — 13 Members

The Kahungye family also started as a much larger group of 27 members, including three silverbacks.

Over time, internal tensions caused the group to split. As a result, 13 members stayed together under the leadership of the head silverback, Gwigi. Notably, the name “Gwigi” means “door” in the local language.

Subsequently, Uganda Wildlife Authority opened the Kahungye family to visitors in October 2011. This opening, in turn, added more trekking options in the Rushaga sector and made gorilla permits more accessible to visitors. To this day, Kahungye remains a popular choice for trekkers who want a moderately sized family with strong silverback energy.

    Mishaya Family — 12 Members

The Mishaya family has one of the most dramatic origin stories in Rushaga. Mishaya was originally part of the Nshongi group. In 2010, he broke away from the family and formed his own group. His bold move inspired others. In 2012, another group called Bweza followed his lead and also separated from Nshongi.

Mishaya was a fierce and determined silverback. In April 2012, he led an attack on a non-habituated gorilla group. The conflict ended badly. He lost two of his infant gorillas and suffered serious injuries that nearly killed him. Fortunately, the Mountain Veterinary Project stepped in and rescued him.

By 2014, his family had grown to 12 members. Sadly, Mishaya passed away that same year. His successor, Mwiine, took over as the new alpha silverback. The transition went smoothly. Visitors can still trek to this family, and the continued leadership of Mwiine keeps the group stable and accessible.

    Bweza Family — 12 Members

Bweza family formed in December 2012, also after splitting from the Nshongi group. The name “Bweza” means “more productive” in the local language. The family’s alpha silverback, also named Bweza, leads a group of 12 that includes two silverbacks, four black backs, three adult females, one sub-adult, and two infants.

After the break from Nshongi, rangers initially expected the two groups to reunite. Instead, the separation became permanent. Bweza’s family built its own identity and territory. Today, this family stands out as one of the most versatile groups to visit in Rushaga. Their range of ages and family dynamics makes each trek fresh and exciting.

    Busingye Family — 9 Members

The Busingye family brings a different energy to Rushaga. The name “Busingye” means “peace,” yet this family has earned a reputation for bold behavior. Busingye originally belonged to the Kahungye family. She broke away in 2012 with just seven members.

Since then, Busingye has grown the family through her own assertive methods. She regularly engaged in conflicts with neighboring groups. Through these encounters, she took female black backs from rival groups, which helped grow the family from seven to nine members. Despite her aggressive approach, the family remains accessible to visitors. Trekking with Busingye’s group gives you a front-row seat to gorilla dominance and social behavior in action.

The Batwa People: A Cultural Experience You Should Not Miss

After your gorilla trek or habituation session, another special experience awaits you. The Batwa people live near the Rushaga sector. They are indigenous pygmies who once called the Bwindi forest their home for thousands of years. They hunted, gathered food, and built their lives entirely within the forest.

Today, the Batwa welcome visitors into their world. They share stories of forest life and demonstrate skills passed down through generations. You watch them perform traditional dances, display hunting techniques, and craft cups from bamboo right before your eyes. By visiting the Batwa community, you directly support local livelihoods. Your participation helps keep their culture alive and puts income into the hands of the community.

Why Choose Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi  for Gorilla Safari

Rushaga offers more gorilla families than most other sectors in Bwindi. Five habituated families mean more daily permits and more flexibility for planning your trip. Additionally, the sector offers both standard trekking and the rare habituation experience. Very few places in the world offer this dual option. The landscapes surrounding the sector also give you rich wildlife and natural scenery beyond just gorillas.

Besides gorillas, the sector gives you access to the Batwa cultural experience, scenic lake visits, and views of the Virunga mountain range. Therefore, a visit to Rushaga packs multiple unforgettable experiences into one trip.
