The Gorilla Family Groups In the Rushaga Region Are
Bweza Gorilla Family
In 2010, silverback Mishaya broke away from the largest gorilla family, Nshongi, to form his own family, the Mishaya gorilla family. The Mishaya family then split again when Bweza led six members away to form his own family, the Bweza gorilla family.
Busingye gorilla family
The Busingye gorilla family emerged when the silverback Busingye chose to separate from the Kahungye gorilla family and establish his own group. However, despite the name ‘Busingye’ meaning ‘peaceful’ in the local language, the silverback contradicts this with his behavior, frequently engaging in fights with other silverbacks.
Kahungye Gorilla Family
The Kahungye Gorilla family became accessible for touring in 2011, with the silverback named Rumansi leading the group. After habituation, one of them, Busingye, made the decision to break off and form his own independent family.
Mishaya Gorilla Family
The Mishaya gorilla family came into existence when the silverback Mishaya decided to separate from the Nshongi gorilla family and establish his own group. Mishaya, who leads this family, has gained a reputation as a fighter, frequently engaging with members from other families in order to acquire new members for his own group.
Nshongi gorilla family
The name ‘‘Nshongi’’ originated from the river where the group was first seen and the family was open for tourism in early 2009. This family has led the second youngest silverback in the group leading the other three (3), this is something unusual for gorillas. The group split twice to form the Bweza and Mishaya gorilla families respectively.
