Solo vs Group Chimpanzee Trekking

Solo vs Group Chimpanzee Trekking: What Is the Difference?
Solo vs group chimpanzee trekking is not quite the same as choosing between a private and shared safari vehicle. You can travel through Uganda completely privately, sleep in your own room and have your own driver-guide, but still join other permitted visitors during the official chimpanzee tracking experience.
At Kibale National Park, chimpanzee trekking is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Visitors attend a briefing before entering the forest with an official ranger-guide.
For most travellers, therefore, the real decision is whether to enjoy a private safari around the chimpanzee trek or join a shared safari where the vehicle, guide and wider itinerary may also be shared.
Important Clarification
Solo Traveller Does Not Automatically Mean a Private Forest Trek
A solo traveller can have a private safari vehicle, airport transfers, driver-guide and private accommodation arrangements.
The chimpanzee tracking activity itself remains ranger-led and may include other permitted visitors. This means a private safari vehicle does not automatically create a private chimpanzee encounter.
It is therefore useful to distinguish between your private safari arrangements and the official chimpanzee tracking activity.

How Chimpanzee Tracking Works in Kibale
Chimpanzee tracking begins with registration and a ranger briefing. Visitors learn about forest behaviour, safety and chimpanzee tracking rules before entering the forest.
The search itself can take several hours because chimpanzees remain wild and move freely through the forest.
Once chimpanzees are located during standard tracking, visitors normally spend a maximum of one hour observing them.
Morning and afternoon tracking sessions are available, and the ranger controls the pace, route and viewing conditions.
Minimum Age for Chimpanzee Trekking
Uganda Wildlife Authority’s current conservation tariff lists the minimum age for chimpanzee tracking as 12 years.
Families travelling with younger children should therefore plan alternative activities for children who do not meet the minimum age requirement.
Bigodi Wetland walks, lodge activities and other family-friendly experiences may be possible depending on the child’s age and the wider itinerary.
Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Permit Prices
Chimpanzee permits are purchased individually. Travelling as part of a group does not mean one permit can be shared between several visitors.
| Permit | FNR | FR | Rest of Africa | EAC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kibale Tracking – 2026 | USD 250 | USD 200 | — | UGX 180,000 |
| Low Season – Apr, May & Nov 2026 | USD 200 | USD 150 | — | Confirm current applicable rate |
| From 1 Jan 2027 | USD 300 | USD 200 | USD 100 | UGX 180,000 |
The April, May and November 2026 promotional permits cannot be rescheduled. Permit tariffs are subject to change, so availability and the applicable visitor category should always be reconfirmed before payment.
How to Book a Kibale Chimpanzee Permit
- Choose your trekking date. Your chimpanzee permit is linked to a specific date and activity.
- Check availability. Popular periods can sell out.
- Provide traveller details. These should correspond with your travel documents and visitor category.
- Make payment. The permit is secured once the required payment is completed.
- Build the safari around the permit. Accommodation, transport and onward travel can then be organised around the confirmed trekking date.
Since 1 March 2026, the previous seven-day unpaid permit reservation window has been suspended. Uganda Wildlife Authority now requires full payment at the time of booking to secure permits.
Why Does a Solo Safari Cost More?
The chimpanzee permit is not usually the main reason a solo safari costs more. The difference comes primarily from private transport, driver-guide costs and accommodation.
Permit
Each traveller requires an individual permit.
Vehicle
Solo travellers carry the entire private vehicle cost rather than dividing it between several people.
Guide
A private professional driver-guide serves one traveller instead of several guests.
Room
Solo guests normally occupy a room alone, which can create a single supplement.
Where to Stay for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale
Choosing the right accommodation can make a major difference to your Kibale experience. The lodge should suit your budget but also position you conveniently for chimpanzee trekking and your onward safari route.
How Does Accommodation Differ for Solo and Group Travellers?
Solo Travellers
A solo traveller normally stays in a private single room or a double room for single occupancy.
Although this costs more per person, you still have opportunities to socialise in dining areas, lounges, bars and lodge campfires.
Couples & Groups
Couples generally share double rooms, while friends may use twins. Families and larger parties may use family cottages or several rooms.
Room sharing can reduce the accommodation cost per traveller.
Why Lodge Location Matters in Kibale
The lowest-priced lodge is not necessarily the most practical option. Staying far from the chimpanzee tracking area can mean an earlier start and extra driving before the activity.
A conveniently positioned lodge makes morning tracking more comfortable and can also simplify afternoon activities such as Bigodi Wetland.
If you are continuing toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi or another western Uganda destination, accommodation should also fit the direction of the wider safari route.
What to Look for When Choosing a Kibale Lodge
Location
Reduce unnecessary driving before tracking.
Early Breakfast
Important when leaving early for a morning activity.
Single Supplement
Solo travellers should confirm the room basis.
Packed Meals
Useful when continuing to another activity or destination.
Laundry
Helpful after wet or muddy forest trekking.
Route Position
Consider where your safari travels next.
Is Chimpanzee Trekking Good for Solo Travellers?
Yes. Chimpanzee trekking can work particularly well within a solo Uganda safari.
You can retain your own room, vehicle and driver-guide while still meeting other travellers during chimpanzee tracking, at lodges, on boat cruises and during other organised activities.
This provides a useful balance between independence and social interaction.
Safari Vacations and Travel Services can arrange private transport, accommodation, permit booking and a professional driver-guide around the official tracking activity.
Does Group Size Affect the Walking Pace?
The ranger normally keeps the tracking party together, so the pace needs to accommodate the group.
However, chimpanzee movement remains the biggest factor. The chimpanzees may be relatively close on one day and much farther away on another.
They can also move quickly through the forest after being located.
If you have mobility limitations or another issue that may affect your ability to walk through forest terrain, this should be communicated before trekking.
What to Pack for Chimpanzee Trekking
Walking Shoes
Good grip is useful on uneven and muddy trails.
Long Trousers
Useful around vegetation and insects.
Rain Jacket
Rain can occur in Kibale at any time.
Drinking Water
The forest search can take several hours.
Camera
Bring spare battery power and memory.
Small Daypack
Useful for water and personal essentials.
Chimpanzee Trekking Rules and Etiquette
- Do not trek when suffering from an infectious illness.
- Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout the activity.
- Keep quiet in the forest.
- Maintain the required distance from chimpanzees.
- Do not chase or attempt to touch chimpanzees.
- Eating, drinking and smoking are restricted around chimpanzees.
- Flash photography is not permitted.
Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale
Chimpanzee tracking takes place throughout the year.
During wetter periods the forest is lush and trails can become muddy, while chimpanzees may sometimes be easier to locate because food is more available.
Drier months can provide easier walking conditions, although chimpanzees may travel farther through the forest in search of food.
The best period therefore depends on whether you prioritise easier trail conditions, greener scenery, visitor numbers or seasonal permit offers.

Common Misunderstandings About Solo Chimpanzee Trekking

Not necessarily. Standard trekking remains a ranger-managed activity.
“A private vehicle gives me a private chimpanzee trek.”
No. Private transport and the official tracking activity are separate.
“Group travel means no privacy at all.”
Not necessarily. You can have private rooms while joining other travellers for transport or activities.
“Solo travellers spend the whole safari alone.”
Lodges and organised activities provide plenty of natural opportunities to meet other travellers.
Solo vs Group Chimpanzee Trekking FAQs
1. Can I trek chimpanzees completely alone in Kibale?
Standard chimpanzee tracking is ranger-led, so a private safari does not automatically mean you enter the forest alone.
2. What is the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking?
Uganda Wildlife Authority’s current conservation tariff lists the minimum age as 12 years.
3. Is solo chimpanzee trekking more expensive?
Usually yes, because private transport, guiding and single-room accommodation are not divided among several travellers.
4. Can I have a private safari vehicle?
Yes. You can have your own private 4×4 vehicle and driver-guide while participating in the official ranger-led tracking activity.
5. Will I meet other travellers on a solo safari?
Yes. Chimpanzee trekking, lodges, boat cruises and other organised activities offer opportunities to meet other travellers.
6. Is group travel cheaper?
It can be because vehicle and guide costs are shared, although each traveller still requires an individual chimpanzee permit.
7. How long can I stay with the chimpanzees?
Standard chimpanzee tracking normally allows a maximum of one hour once the chimpanzees have been located.
8. Is solo trekking better for photographers?
Private safari logistics provide more flexibility outside the forest, but photography during tracking still follows ranger instructions.
9. How long does the full chimpanzee trek take?
The overall activity can take several hours depending on the location and movement of the chimpanzees.
10. Is Kibale good for solo travellers?

11. Where should I stay for chimpanzee trekking?
Choose accommodation in or around the Kibale region that provides practical access to your tracking point and fits the direction of your wider safari.
12. What if I want more time with chimpanzees?

13. Can I combine chimpanzees and gorillas?
Yes. Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi combine naturally on a western Uganda primate and wildlife circuit.
14. Should I book my permit in advance?
Yes. Advance booking is recommended because permit availability is limited, particularly during popular travel periods.
15. Can Safari Vacations organise everything?
Yes. Safari Vacations and Travel Services can arrange permits, accommodation, private transport, driver-guide services and the wider Uganda safari itinerary.
Solo or Group Chimpanzee Trekking: Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on what you value most. A private solo safari provides greater privacy, flexibility and control over transport and accommodation, while a shared safari can reduce costs and provide more social interaction.
The most important distinction is that your wider safari arrangements and the official forest activity are not the same thing. A traveller can enjoy an entirely private Uganda journey while participating in the same ranger-led chimpanzee tracking system as other visitors.
For travellers who want independence without feeling isolated, a private solo safari can provide an excellent balance: your own vehicle, guide and room, combined with opportunities to meet other travellers during chimpanzee tracking and at your lodge.
