How to Book Gorilla Permits in Rwanda
You should book Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda at least six months in advance, as only 96 permits are issued daily. Demand is particularly high during the dry/peak season. Therefore, so early booking increases your chances of securing a permit and better accommodation options.
You can book permits through a registered tour operator like Safari Vacations and Travel Services or directly via the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Tour operators simplify the process as they have extensive knowledge of Rwanda, the gorilla families, and suitable accommodations.
To book a gorilla permit, you need to provide:
- Preferred trekking dates – Suggest multiple dates in case your first choice is unavailable.
- Scanned copy of your passport – This is required for processing the permit and ensuring you meet the minimum age requirement (12 years).
- Payment details – Payments can be made via direct bank transfer or credit card. If using a bank transfer, ensure the bank covers withdrawal charges so the full permit fee is received. Note that not all tour operators accept credit cards, and those that do may charge a 3%–9% surcharge.
Once the availability is confirmed, the tour operator will pre-book the permit, but payment must be made immediately due to high demand. After payment is processed, a scanned copy of the permit will be sent to you, and upon arrival, you will receive the original permit from your guide.
If booking directly with RDB, you must email your bank payment confirmation and, if traveling alone, collect the permit from their offices.

Gorilla Trekking Experience in Rwanda
Who Can Check Rwanda Gorilla Permits Online?- The Gorilla trekking experience. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a thrilling activity open to tourists aged 15 years and above. It starts early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. During this session, lead guides explain the rules and regulations, divide trekkers into groups, and assign gorilla families to each group.
The trek begins at the trailhead, with each group heading in different directions in search of their assigned gorilla family. The duration of the trek is unpredictable, ranging from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. The hike takes you through diverse terrains, requiring patience and endurance. Once the gorillas are found, each group spends one hour observing them before trekking back to the park headquarters, where participants receive a certificate of participation.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is safe due to the extensive habituation process the gorillas undergo before being opened to visitors. Additionally, 24/7 security is provided by the government and other security agencies. Tourists are also encouraged to take personal safety precautions, such as following guidelines, avoiding carrying valuables, and not counting money in public.
Each morning, trackers are sent out to locate the gorillas’ last known position. Once found, they use radio communication to guide the trekking groups in the right direction. Since gorillas are constantly on the move, it may take time to locate them.
Ranger guides carry machetes to clear paths through dense vegetation, as there are no predefined trails. An armed ranger also accompanies each group to ensure safety, and in emergencies, warning shots may be fired into the air.
Best Time to Book Gorilla Permits in Rwanda
To secure a gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda, it is recommended to book 6 months to a year in advance. This is especially important during the peak seasons from June to September and December to February when demand is high and permits sell out quickly.
While permits can still be booked 3 months before the trek, availability becomes limited, making it difficult to secure a spot. Occasionally, last-minute permits may be available, particularly during the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November, but these are not guaranteed.
For the best experience and flexibility in choosing trekking dates, early booking is highly recommended.
