The Cost of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda in 2026?

The cost of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda in 2026 is set at $800 per person per trek for foreign non-residents. It also $700 per person for residents and $500 for citizens from other African countries. It also costs 300,000 Uganda Shillings for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan). This fee grants you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy a one-hour encounter with the endangered mountain gorillas. You encounter them in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Uganda boasts over 20 habituated gorilla families. These gorilla families are between Bwindi and Mgahinga, and these groups are available daily for gorilla trekking adventures. In addition to the standard gorilla trekking, Uganda also offers the rare chance to take part in the gorilla habituation experience.  which takes place exclusively in Bwindi Forest. This unique experience costs $1,500 per person and allows trekkers to spend up to four hours with gorillas. This time helps you to observe and learning from semi-habituated gorillas with close supervision of expert trackers and researchers. This is a much more immersive option compared to the standard one-hour trek.

You can secure gorilla permits in Uganda directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or via a reliable tour operator. Reliable tour operators include Anthill Gorilla Safaris or Safari Vacations and Travel Services.  We are famous for arranging seamless bookings.

When it comes to the Uganda Gorilla Trekking Cost in 2026, travelers often ask a variety of questions: How much do gorilla permits cost in Uganda? How can I book a gorilla permit? Where to purchase gorilla permits in Uganda or Rwanda? What is the best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda? This article addresses all these common queries regarding the process of booking gorilla permits. It is important to note that you should secure permits in advance. They serve as confirmation that you are officially booked for a gorilla trekking experience in Uganda or Rwanda.

How can I book Uganda Gorilla Permits for 2025 and 2026?

Once you have confirmed your travel dates, kindly send us an email at info@ugandarwanda-safaris.com. We’ll then check the availability of gorilla permits online with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. After verifying that permits are available for your travel dates, we’ll notify you and then issue an invoice for payment. Upon receiving your payment in our account, we will immediately proceed to purchase the permits on your behalf. Then, we’ll share a scanned copy with you for your records. This copy serves as confirmation that you are officially booked for the Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Forest National Park.

We strongly advise that you secure your gorilla permits at least 2–3 months in advance of your visit. This is because the number of permits issued daily is very limited, and they tend to sell out quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is the Age Limit for Gorilla Tracking in Uganda?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum recommended age is 85 years, depending largely on individual fitness levels. For elderly visitors or those who may find the hike physically challenging, gorilla trekking is now more accessible. This is the case particularly in Bwindi Forest, through the use of sedan chair carriers. These special chairs allow trekkers who are unfit or unable to walk into the forest to still experience the adventure. A team of porters carries the visitor from the trekking site to where the gorillas are staying. You can either arrange the sedan chair service in advance or hire it on the actual day of the trek. The costs typically range between $400 and $500.

What is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is possible all year round, but the most ideal time to visit is during the dry season. The months of January, February, June, July, August, and early September are generally considered the best periods for this adventure. During these months, the forest trails are less slippery and more accessible, making the trek less challenging. The drier conditions also make it easier to reach the park, as roads remain in better condition compared to the wet season, when heavy rains can sometimes cause difficulties. In addition, the reduced vegetation cover during the dry season improves visibility, giving trekkers clearer and closer views of the mountain gorillas as they move and feed in their natural habitat. While gorilla trekking can be undertaken at any time of the year, choosing the drier months enhances the overall experience by combining accessibility, comfort, and excellent wildlife encounters.

What do I need to pack for gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda?

When preparing for gorilla trekking, packing the right gear is essential to ensure a safe and comfortable experience in the forest. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and slippery, especially during the rainy season, so a sturdy pair of hiking boots with good grip is a must. Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight trousers are highly recommended to protect against stinging nettles, biting ants, and the thick undergrowth. A rain jacket and a warm sweater or fleece will keep you comfortable in the unpredictable mountain weather.

Other important items include insect repellent, gardening gloves for extra protection during the trek, a hat and sunscreen for sunny conditions, and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Don’t forget a good camera with spare batteries to capture the memorable moments, binoculars for bird and wildlife spotting, and wet wipes for convenience. Packing sandals or light shoes for relaxation, along with swimwear in case your lodge has a pool, can also enhance your trip.

How Do I Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for Gorilla Trekking?

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park can be reached both by road and by air. Traveling by road from Entebbe or Kampala takes approximately 8–9 hours along the main safari circuit. To access the southern sector, you turn off at Muko on the Kabale–Kisoro road. A Uganda Wildlife Authority signpost will guide you toward the lodge you booked in either the Rushaga or Nkuringo sector. Though the journey is long, it offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside, rolling hills, and rural communities.

Alternatively, you can travel by air for a faster and more convenient option. Domestic flights operated by AeroLink and Fly Uganda connect Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi airfield. You can fly to Kisoro Airstrip, which provides easy access to the southern sectors of Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Mgahinga. From Kisoro, your tour operator will arrange a transfer to your lodge and onward to the park. You can also fly to Kihihi Airstrip if you want to access the Northern sectors of Kihihi and the Ruhija sector. This option is ideal for travelers who prefer to avoid the long drive.
