What’s the best time to visit Nyungwe?

The best time to visit Nyungwe National Park is during the dry seasons, which span from June to September and from December to February. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and the trails are less slippery, making it ideal for activities like chimpanzee trekking, hiking, and canopy walks. The dry season also offers clearer skies, enhancing the overall experience of exploring the park’s diverse flora and fauna.

While bird watching can be enjoyed year-round, the wet season from March to May is particularly good for spotting a variety of bird species. However, heavy rains during this period can make some trails challenging to navigate. Despite the rain, the forest remains lush and vibrant, providing a unique and immersive experience for visitors who don’t mind a bit of mud.

For those interested in primate tracking, the dry season is preferable as it increases the chances of encountering chimpanzees and other primates in their natural habitat. Additionally, the dry months coincide with the high season for tourism, so it’s advisable to book accommodations and permits in advance to secure your spot.
