How to Book a Uganda Gorilla Safari

Learn how to book a Uganda mountain gorilla safari step by step, from checking permit availability and choosing Bwindi or Mgahinga to selecting the correct trekking sector, accommodation, transport and payment arrangements.

    Check Gorilla Permit Availability

    WhatsApp Us

Understanding how to book a Uganda gorilla safari is important because gorilla trekking is different from booking an ordinary wildlife holiday. The gorilla permit is limited to a specific date and trekking location, so it should normally be checked before you finalize accommodation, transportation and other non-refundable safari arrangements.Uganda offers mountain gorilla trekking in two protected areas: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi has four main trekking sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo—while Mgahinga provides an alternative gorilla experience in the Virunga Mountains. Travellers who are not yet sure which park suits them can compare our guide to Bwindi vs Mgahinga gorilla trekking.Safari Vacations and Travel Services can coordinate the entire process, including checking gorilla permit availability, arranging the permit, selecting accommodation close to your trekking point, providing private 4×4 transport and adding other Uganda safari experiences where required.

    Quick Answer

How Do You Book a Uganda Gorilla Safari?

The safest approach is to choose your approximate dates first and then check gorilla permit availability before confirming your lodge. Once a suitable permit is available, confirm the correct visitor category, make the permit payment, select accommodation in the correct trekking area and build the rest of the safari around the confirmed gorilla date.

    1. Choose your preferred travel dates.
    2. Decide between Bwindi and Mgahinga.
    3. Check gorilla permit availability.
    4. Confirm your correct permit category.
    5. Pay for the permit so the available space can be secured.
    6. Confirm your trekking sector or park.
    7. Choose accommodation close to the trekking point.
    8. Arrange private road transport or domestic flights.
    9. Provide accurate passport details.
    10. Complete the safari balance and final travel preparations.

The Three Key Parts of Booking a Gorilla Safari

The easiest way to avoid booking problems is to confirm your permit first, match it with the correct accommodation and then organize transport around the confirmed trekking location.

Booking a Uganda mountain gorilla trekking permit

    Step One

    Secure the Gorilla Permit

Your permit determines the trekking date and location, so availability should be checked before you commit to a lodge that may be in the wrong part of Bwindi.

    Step Two

    Book the Right Lodge

Once the trekking area is confirmed, choose accommodation that gives you practical access to the correct briefing point rather than selecting a lodge only by appearance.

    Step Three

    Arrange Your Transport

Choose between an overland 4×4 safari and a domestic flight depending on your starting point, available time, budget and wider Uganda itinerary.

See Gorilla Safaris from Kigali →

    Step 1

Choose Your Uganda Gorilla Safari Dates

Begin with the period you would like to travel, but keep some flexibility until gorilla permit availability has been checked. If you can move your trek by one or two days, the operator may have more options when matching permits, lodges and transportation.

Uganda’s gorilla parks are open throughout the year. June to September and December to February are popular because conditions are generally drier, while wetter months can offer greener forest scenery and sometimes greater accommodation flexibility. Our guide to the best time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi explains the seasonal differences in more detail.

If your dates fall in April, May or November, ask whether the UWA low-season permit rate applies to your visitor category and intended trekking date.

    Step 2

    Choose Between Bwindi and Mgahinga

Uganda’s mountain gorillas can be visited in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both offer the same core experience of trekking through natural forest with trained guides before spending the permitted viewing period with a habituated gorilla family, but the logistics are different.

    FactorBwindiMgahinga

LandscapeDense ancient rainforest and steep forested hills.Virunga volcanic scenery, bamboo and montane forest.
Useful Add-OnLake Bunyonyi, Queen Elizabeth National Park or cultural experiences.Golden monkeys and Virunga volcano hikes.

Travellers interested in Mgahinga can read about gorilla families and permits in Mgahinga or consider a Mgahinga gorilla and golden monkey safari.

    Step 3

Check Uganda Gorilla Permit Availability Before Booking Your Lodge

This is one of the most important steps in the entire booking process. A gorilla permit is not a general ticket that lets you arrive at any Bwindi entrance you prefer. The booking is associated with a particular trekking date and location, so accommodation should normally be selected after the permit situation is understood.

For Foreign Non-Residents, UWA’s permit-management guidelines state that gorilla tracking permits are purchased through a Uganda Tourism Board-licensed tour operator. Safari Vacations and Travel Services can check the UWA reservation system for your preferred dates and explain which areas are available.

Since March 2026, the former seven-day unpaid reservation window has been suspended. This means that once suitable permits are identified, travellers should be prepared to complete the required permit payment promptly if they want those spaces secured.

For more detail, see our guide to Uganda gorilla permits and licensed tour operators or read about buying a Uganda gorilla permit.

    Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices

Uganda Wildlife Authority prices gorilla permits according to the visitor’s citizenship or residency category. Make sure you are quoted under the correct category because supporting documentation is required.

    Visitor CategoryStandard Gorilla PermitTypical Documentation
    Foreign Non-ResidentUSD 800Valid passport.
Foreign ResidentUSD 700Passport plus valid qualifying EAC residence documentation.
Rest of AfricaUSD 500Valid passport from an eligible African country outside the EAC.
East African Community CitizenUGX 300,000Qualifying EAC passport or national identification.

    Low-Season Permit Note:

UWA introduced low-season gorilla trekking rates of USD 600 for Foreign Non-Residents and USD 500 for Foreign Residents for April, May and November. UWA states that these discounted low-season permits cannot be rescheduled, so travellers should understand the conditions before choosing the promotional rate.

What Does a Uganda Gorilla Permit Include?

A standard gorilla trekking permit covers the regulated gorilla trekking activity for the confirmed date. UWA’s tariff information states that the permit rate includes the guide fee, park entrance for the day and a community development contribution.

The permit does not automatically include your hotel, transportation to Bwindi or Mgahinga, porter, tips, meals outside your booked safari arrangement, international flights or travel insurance. When comparing quotations, therefore, check whether the operator is quoting only the permit or the entire gorilla safari package.

For a detailed breakdown of the experience itself, visit our mountain gorilla tracking guide.

Understand Bwindi’s Four Gorilla Trekking Sectors

Bwindi is not one small entrance where every visitor begins from the same point. It has four principal trekking sectors, and the sector allocated to your permit affects the lodge you should choose, the road you take and how the wider itinerary should be organized.

    Buhoma

Located in northern Bwindi and one of the longest-established gorilla trekking areas. It connects conveniently with the Ishasha side of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

    Ruhija

Located on the eastern side of Bwindi and useful for itineraries connecting Kabale, Queen Elizabeth National Park and other western Uganda destinations.

    Rushaga

Situated in southern Bwindi with several trekking possibilities and convenient access from the Kisoro and Kigali direction.

    Nkuringo

Located in southwestern Bwindi and known for dramatic landscapes, steep terrain and useful access from the southern approach.

The key booking principle is simple: confirm the permit location before confirming the lodge. This prevents an early-morning transfer across difficult terrain to a distant trekking sector.

Accommodation for a Uganda Mountain Gorilla Safari

Your lodge should match your confirmed trekking area. These examples show the type of accommodation that can be used around southern Bwindi and Mgahinga.

Important: Lodge availability and the most practical property depend on the confirmed permit location, travel route, budget and room requirements.

    Step 4

Decide Whether to Start from Entebbe or Kigali

Both Entebbe and Kigali can be used as gateways for a Uganda gorilla safari. Entebbe is normally the natural choice when the gorilla trek forms part of a longer Uganda itinerary, while Kigali can be practical for shorter trips concentrating on southern Bwindi or Mgahinga.

Road travel from Entebbe to the Bwindi region is long, so many travellers break the journey with another destination or use a domestic flight. Kigali is geographically closer to southwestern Uganda, but the itinerary involves an international border crossing, so the necessary immigration documents must be considered.

Travellers with limited time can compare our 2-day Bwindi gorilla tour from Kigali or our express Uganda gorilla trekking from Kigali.

Road Safari or Fly-In Gorilla Safari?

A private road safari gives you more flexibility and allows you to experience Uganda’s countryside along the way. It is particularly useful when the gorilla trek is combined with other national parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Kibale or Lake Mburo.

A domestic flight can substantially reduce the longest road transfer for travellers with limited time or those who prefer a more comfortable journey. Regional flights serve airstrips in southwestern Uganda, after which a road transfer connects the airstrip to the lodge.

    FactorPrivate Road SafariFly-In Safari
CostGenerally more economical.Higher because flights and local transfers are combined.
Travel TimeLonger but scenic.Reduces the longest overland sections.
FlexibilityExcellent for stops and multi-park itineraries.Dependent on scheduled flight times and baggage conditions.
Best ForLonger Uganda itineraries.Short or higher-comfort gorilla trips.

How Many Days Do You Need for a Uganda Gorilla Safari?

The right duration depends mainly on where you begin and what you want to combine with the gorilla trek. Trying to make the trip too short can turn an extraordinary wildlife experience into a rushed road journey.

    2 Days

Possible from Kigali when flights and border logistics fit the itinerary.

    3 Days

A common short gorilla safari format with one dedicated trekking day.

    4–5 Days

Allows a more relaxed pace or additions such as golden monkeys, Lake Bunyonyi or another gorilla trek.

    7+ Days

Suitable for combining gorillas with chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth National Park or additional wildlife destinations.

For inspiration, see our short gorilla trekking safari options, 8-day Uganda gorilla tracking tour or a longer Best of Uganda safari.

    Step 5

Send the Correct Information When Requesting a Gorilla Safari Quote

You do not need to prepare a complicated travel brief. A few accurate details are enough for the operator to check the permit system and begin building the safari around your requirements.

    Travel Dates
Exact dates or a flexible date range.
    Number of Travellers
    Include children’s ages where relevant.
    Nationality / Residency
Needed to identify the correct permit category.
    Safari Length
How many days you have available.
    Accommodation Level
    Budget, mid-range or luxury.
    Starting Point
Entebbe, Kampala, Kigali or another location.
    Other Interests
Chimpanzees, wildlife, golden monkeys or culture.
    Special Requirements
    Mobility, dietary or rooming needs.

    Step 6

Pay for the Gorilla Permit and Confirm the Safari

Once suitable permits have been confirmed as available, your operator should provide the payment information required to secure them. Since UWA suspended the former seven-day unpaid reservation window in March 2026, available permits are secured through payment rather than being held for several days without funds.

This is why a serious gorilla safari enquiry can move quickly once availability is found. If you wait several days after an operator checks the system, another traveller may purchase the same limited permit space.

The gorilla permit payment should also be distinguished from the general safari deposit. Your invoice should make clear which amount is paying for permits, which amount confirms lodges and transport, and when the remaining safari balance will be due.

    Step 7

Provide Accurate Passport and Residency Details

Visitor categories are determined by citizenship and qualifying residency status. UWA’s permit guidelines specify different documentation for East African citizens, Rest of Africa citizens, Foreign Residents and Foreign Non-Residents.

Use the same passport details that you will travel with and make sure names are spelled correctly. Foreign Residents claiming the resident tariff should provide valid qualifying residence documentation rather than assuming that living temporarily in the region automatically qualifies for the reduced rate.

If a passport is renewed after the permit is booked, notify the operator before travelling so that the relevant booking information can be reviewed.

Standard Gorilla Trekking or Gorilla Habituation?

The standard gorilla trek is the experience most travellers choose. Once the gorillas are located, visitors normally receive one hour of observation with the habituated family.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is different. It offers a longer period with a gorilla family undergoing the habituation process and is available in Bwindi rather than being a general option at every Uganda gorilla location.

Travellers considering the extended experience should read our detailed Uganda Gorilla Habituation Experience guide and our gorilla trekking vs gorilla habituation comparison.

    Habituation price update:

UWA’s February 2026 tariff-change notice states that from 1 January 2027 Gorilla Habituation will be USD 1,800 for Foreign Non-Residents, USD 1,600 for Foreign Residents, USD 1,000 for Rest of Africa citizens and UGX 750,000 for EAC citizens. Travellers booking before that effective date should ask for the tariff applicable to their actual trekking date.

What Happens on Gorilla Trekking Day?

You will report to the appropriate park briefing point in the morning, where Uganda Wildlife Authority staff explain trekking rules and organize visitors before they enter the forest with ranger-guides. The duration of the forest walk varies depending on the location of the gorilla family and the terrain.

UWA describes gorilla treks as typically taking approximately two to seven hours and allowing one hour of observation once the habituated gorilla family is located. Because the trek can involve steep, muddy or uneven terrain, reasonable walking fitness is helpful.

Travellers should also understand that the minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years. Families travelling with younger children should therefore build alternative activities into the safari for those who cannot participate.

For additional preparation, see our complete Uganda gorilla trekking guide.

    Porters, Fitness and Trekking Difficulty

Gorilla trekking does not require mountaineering skills, but the forests are naturally mountainous and weather can make trails slippery. If you are concerned about carrying a daypack, camera equipment or maintaining balance on steep sections, hiring a porter can make the trek more comfortable while also providing direct local employment.

If mobility or fitness is an important consideration, tell your operator before the safari. Although no particular gorilla family can be guaranteed to be “easy” because gorillas move naturally through the forest, advance information can help the local team understand your circumstances.

What Can You Combine with a Uganda Gorilla Safari?

One of Uganda’s advantages is that gorilla trekking can form part of a much broader wildlife holiday. Instead of flying into the region only for one trek, you can connect Bwindi or Mgahinga with chimpanzees, game drives, boat cruises, birding or walking safaris.

    Queen Elizabeth

Combine gorillas with lions, elephants, buffaloes and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

There is no rule that says every gorilla safari must be booked a fixed number of months ahead, but earlier booking generally gives you more choices of trekking dates, sectors and lodges. This is especially valuable when your international flights are fixed or you intend to travel during popular periods.

Planning three to six months or more ahead is sensible for many travellers, while highly specific dates, premium lodges or large groups may benefit from even earlier planning. Last-minute gorilla safaris can still be organized whenever suitable permit and lodge availability remains.

For shorter trips, see our guide to booking a short gorilla safari.

What Determines the Total Cost of a Uganda Gorilla Safari?

The gorilla permit is only one part of the final safari price. Your total cost also depends on trip length, group size, accommodation category, starting point, vehicle type, whether you fly or drive and any additional wildlife or primate activities included.

A two-person private safari can cost more per person than a four-person safari because several ground costs are shared between fewer travellers. Luxury lodges and domestic flights also increase the price, while simple accommodation and efficient road routing can reduce it.

Travellers focused on value can review our guide to affordable gorilla trekking in Africa, but the cheapest itinerary should still use a practical lodge and reliable transportation.

Questions to Ask Before Paying for a Gorilla Safari

    • Is the gorilla permit included in the quoted total?
    • Which gorilla trekking park or Bwindi sector is being booked?
    • Is the proposed lodge close to the correct trekking point?
    • Is the safari private or shared?
    • Which vehicle will be used?
    • Are fuel and driver-guide services included?
    • Which meals are included?
    • Which additional activities require payment?
    • What is required immediately for the gorilla permit?
    • When is the remaining safari balance due?
    • What amendment and cancellation conditions apply?

    What Happens After You Book?

After the permit and safari arrangements have been confirmed, your operator should continue coordinating the details leading up to the trip. This can include final lodge confirmations, airport transfers, itinerary updates, driver-guide arrangements and information about preparing for the trek.

Once you book international flights, send the flight number, arrival date and arrival time to the operator. Before departure, review your final itinerary and make sure the passport you are travelling with matches the information provided for the booking.

What Should You Pack for Gorilla Trekking?

Useful items include comfortable waterproof or water-resistant hiking footwear, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, rain protection, a small daypack, insect repellent, drinking water, sun protection and camera equipment. Gardening-style gloves can also be useful when holding vegetation for balance on steep sections.

Pack for changing mountain weather rather than assuming a dry-season date guarantees a completely dry trek. For a more detailed list, read our Uganda safari packing guide.

Common Mistakes When Booking a Uganda Mountain Gorilla Safari

    • Booking a Bwindi lodge before checking the permit sector.
    • Waiting too long after permit availability has been confirmed.
    • Assuming a gorilla permit can be held without payment.
    • Selecting the wrong visitor category.
    • Forgetting the minimum trekking age of 15 years.
    • Underestimating road transfer times.
    • Choosing accommodation only by price rather than location.
    • Confusing standard gorilla trekking with the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
    • Buying restrictive flights before checking important permit availability.
    • Comparing safari quotations without checking what each price actually includes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Booking a Uganda Gorilla Safari

    1. Where can I trek mountain gorillas in Uganda?

Uganda offers mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda.

    2. How much is a Uganda gorilla permit?

The standard trekking permit is USD 800 for Foreign Non-Residents, USD 700 for qualifying Foreign Residents, USD 500 for Rest of Africa citizens and UGX 300,000 for East African Community citizens.

    3. Are there discounted Uganda gorilla permits?

UWA introduced low-season rates for April, May and November of USD 600 for Foreign Non-Residents and USD 500 for Foreign Residents. The discounted permits cannot be rescheduled.

    4. Can a gorilla permit be held while I decide?

Travellers should not rely on an unpaid hold. UWA suspended the former seven-day reservation window from 1 March 2026, meaning permits are secured through payment at booking.

    5. Should I book the lodge or gorilla permit first?

Check the permit first. The confirmed trekking location helps determine which lodge is practical, especially in Bwindi where trekking takes place across four sectors.

    6. What are the four Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors?

The four main Bwindi trekking sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

    7. What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?

Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the minimum age for gorilla tracking and viewing at 15 years.

    8. How long does gorilla trekking take?

The forest trek varies according to the gorillas’ location and conditions. UWA describes typical trekking durations of around two to seven hours, followed by the permitted viewing period after the gorillas are found.

    9. How long can I stay with the gorillas?

Standard gorilla trekking allows one hour of observation once the habituated gorilla family has been located.

    10. Can I start a Uganda gorilla safari from Kigali?

Yes. Kigali can be a practical gateway for southern Bwindi and Mgahinga itineraries, although travellers must meet the immigration requirements for crossing into Uganda.

    11. Can I fly to Bwindi instead of driving from Entebbe?

Yes. Domestic flights can shorten the longest transfer, after which a road vehicle connects the regional airstrip with your lodge and trekking area.

    12. What is the difference between gorilla trekking and habituation?

Standard trekking provides one hour with a habituated gorilla family after it is located, while the Gorilla Habituation Experience provides an extended encounter with a family undergoing the habituation process.

    13. How early should I book my gorilla safari?

Earlier booking provides a wider choice of permits and lodges. Three to six months or more is sensible for many fixed-date trips, although last-minute booking can still be possible when availability remains.

    14. Can I combine gorilla trekking with a wildlife safari?

Yes. Bwindi and Mgahinga can be combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale, Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls or other Uganda destinations depending on the number of days available.

    15. Can Safari Vacations and Travel Services book the entire gorilla safari?

Yes. Safari Vacations and Travel Services can check applicable gorilla permit availability and arrange the confirmed permit, accommodation, private 4×4 transportation, professional driver-guide, airport transfers and additional safari activities according to your itinerary.

How to Book a Uganda Gorilla Safari Successfully

The most important rule when learning how to book a Uganda mountain gorilla safari is to build the trip around the permit rather than treating the permit as an afterthought. First choose your approximate dates, check availability and confirm the correct permit category. Once the trekking date and location are established, the lodge, vehicle and wider safari route can be organized properly.

This order is particularly important in Bwindi because Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo are different trekking sectors. Booking a lodge first and discovering later that the available permit is on another side of the forest can create unnecessary transfers and additional cost.

Whether you want a simple two- or three-day gorilla safari, an extended Gorilla Habituation Experience or a longer Uganda primate and wildlife journey, the same principle applies: permit first, accommodation second, route and transport around the confirmed trekking location.
