Detailed Itinerary of the 5-Day Mgahinga Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari

Day 1: Start your 5-Day Mgahinga gorillas & Golden Monkey plus Lake Bunyonyi safari
Your driver will pick you up from your overnight hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. He will then brief you about your trip, and make sure that you have all the necessary gear and paperwork. Then, you will drive to Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda with some stopovers. One of the stopovers is at Mpambire Royal Drum Makers to witness how drums are made from skins and wood. You will then proceed to the Equator crossing and then to Mbarara town for Lunch at Agip Motel or Igongo Cultural Center depending on the time at your disposal. After lunch, you will take a scenic drive to Kisoro district starting with the flat lands of Ntungamo. Then, you will see the rolling hills of Kabale to terraced hills and meandering roads to Kisoro District. You will arrive in time for a short relaxation, dinner, and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga
After an early breakfast, our driver will drive you to Mgahinga National Park headquarters arriving in time for briefing. Before briefing, you’ll present your passport details to make sure that you are eligible to trek mountain gorillas. Then, you’ll undertake a briefing from one of the UWA rangers about gorilla trekking. He’ll teach you about the dos and don’ts and instructions to follow on the trek, with the gorillas, and after the trek. A ranger will then lead you to the forest to search for the mountain gorillas. Mgahinga National Park has only one mountain gorilla family, Nyakagezi. The family used to move between Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park. Now, it is permanently resident in Uganda. Once you find the Nyakagezi Family, you will spend one hour in the presence of the gorillas. Then, return to the Lodge for your overnight.

Day 3: Golden monkey experience or Golden Monkey trekking
After breakfast, you will transfer to Mgahinga National Park headquarters. You’ll go for either a full-day golden monkey habituation experience or a half-day golden monkey trekking. You will have a briefing about the dos and don’ts while with golden monkeys. Then, proceed to the mountain/forest for your trek. You will get enough time with researchers if you choose to do the golden monkey experience. This is in contrast with the one hour if you choose to do the golden monkey trekking. Return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Bunyonyi Boat excursion
After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district, the deepest Lake in Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi is the best place to relax after your gorilla trek. A boat cruise will take you to several islands in Lake Bunyonyi each with its different history. You may also choose to hike the hills surrounding Lake Bunyonyi or do some birding.

Day 5: Transfer to Entebbe International Airport
Today marks the end of your 5-Day Mgahinga gorillas, Golden Monkey, and Bunyonyi safari. You will transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight out of Uganda.
