Gorilla Tracking From Entebbe

Gorilla Tracking From Entebbe
Gorilla tracking from Entebbe is one of the most exciting safari experiences in Africa. Uganda is home to some of the last mountain gorillas in the world. You can find these gentle giants deep inside lush equatorial rain forests. Two national parks protect these great apes — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. A trip to see them is both peaceful and thrilling. Every step through the forest brings you closer to a rare and magical encounter. This guide will help you plan your gorilla trek from Entebbe with ease and confidence.
Where Gorilla Tracking Happens
Uganda hosts gorilla tracking in two key national parks. First, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park covers a vast stretch of ancient tropical forest in southwestern Uganda. This forest is dense and green, with rich biodiversity at every turn. Second, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, offering a scenic backdrop for your trek.
Both parks are home to habituated gorilla families. These are groups that researchers and rangers have carefully trained to feel comfortable around human visitors. As a result, you can approach them safely and observe them up close in their natural setting.
Getting There From Entebbe
You can reach the gorilla tracking areas in two main ways. The first option is a road trip. Our team uses comfortable, customised 4×4 vehicles for the journey. The drive from Entebbe to Bwindi takes about 8 to 9 hours. Along the way, you pass through several towns and scenic landscapes. Your driver-guide will point out key landmarks and share history about each region.
The second option is a charter flight. You fly directly from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip in the southwestern part of Uganda. After landing, the transfer to your lodge takes only about 1.5 hours by vehicle. This option saves time and lets you enjoy aerial views of Uganda’s stunning countryside.
Gorilla Trekking vs Gorilla Habituation
When you visit, you can choose between two tracking experiences. Standard gorilla trekking lets you spend one full hour with the gorillas in the jungle. This is enough time to watch them feed, play, and rest in their natural home. Many visitors say this hour feels both too short and unforgettable at the same time.
On the other hand, gorilla habituation gives you four hours with the gorillas. This experience is available in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. During this extended visit, you watch researchers work with the gorilla family. You also learn how rangers slowly train wild gorillas to accept human presence. This is a rare and deeply immersive experience.
Either way, seeing a silverback gorilla in the wild is a moment you will never forget. When a massive silverback locks eyes with you, you feel both humbled and amazed. The effort of the hike is always worth the reward.
Gorilla Permit Costs in Uganda
Uganda offers some of the most affordable gorilla permits in East Africa. As of July 2020, the cost of a standard gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is $800 per person. In comparison, Rwanda charges $1,500 per person for the same experience. Therefore, Uganda gives you a significant saving while still offering world-class gorilla encounters.
For gorilla habituation, the permit costs $1,500 in Uganda. This higher price reflects the longer time you spend with the gorillas and the exclusive nature of the experience. Still, this is a fair price given what you gain — four hours with a wild gorilla family in one of Africa’s most pristine forests.
Our Safari Packages and Services
We offer flexible gorilla safari packages to match your travel schedule and budget. Our popular 3-day and 4-day gorilla trek packages are ideal when you are on a short holiday. These packages cover everything you need — permits, accommodation, transport, and an experienced guide. You simply show up at Entebbe, and we handle the rest.
Our team books your gorilla permits well in advance. This is important because permits sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. Additionally, we arrange comfortable lodges near the gorilla tracking entry points. As a result, you wake up rested and ready for the hike without a long morning drive.
Furthermore, we provide customised 4×4 safari vehicles for all road transfers. These vehicles are spacious and built to handle Uganda’s diverse terrain. Your comfort is our priority throughout the journey. Our driver-guides also speak fluent English and know Uganda’s roads, wildlife, and culture very well.

Tips for a Successful Gorilla Trek
Before you go, there are a few practical things to keep in mind. First, wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants on the day of the trek. The forest has insects, thorny plants, and uneven ground. Good hiking boots are also a must. Second, bring enough water and snacks for the hike, as the duration can vary from two to eight hours depending on the gorilla family’s location that day.
Additionally, follow all the rules set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority when you are with the gorillas. Keep at least seven metres away from them at all times. Do not use flash photography. Stay calm and quiet so you do not disturb them. Your guide will brief you fully before the trek begins.
Finally, book your gorilla permits and safari package as early as possible. Permits are limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day. Demand is high throughout the year, so early booking guarantees you do not miss out.
