What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek matters more than most travellers realise. The right gear keeps you safe, dry, and comfortable throughout one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in the world. Uganda and Rwanda are home to wild mountain gorillas, and reaching them means hiking through dense, wet forests on steep mountain trails. The conditions change fast — from warm sunshine to cold rain within minutes. Therefore, good planning and smart packing give you the best chance of a smooth, enjoyable trek. This guide walks you through every item you need to carry, wear, or pack on tracking day.

Warm Sweaters, Fleece Jackets, and Rain Jackets

First and foremost, pack warm layers. Uganda and Rwanda’s gorilla tracking areas sit at high elevations. The air is cool, and the forests stay damp and cold most of the time. A warm sweater or fleece jacket keeps your body temperature steady during the hike. However, the weather shifts quickly, so a rain jacket is just as important. Rain falls at almost any time of the year in these mountain forests. Therefore, always carry both a fleece layer and a waterproof outer jacket. They work together — the fleece traps warmth while the rain jacket blocks wind and water. Pack them both even if the morning sky looks clear.

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek include Scarf or Bandana for Extra Warmth

In addition to your jacket, bring a scarf or bandana. The areas around tracking centres like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest get cold and wet without warning. A scarf adds a simple layer of warmth around your neck and face. Furthermore, a bandana works double duty — you can wear it as a face cover to keep out dust or insects on the trail. It is lightweight and takes up almost no space in your bag. Consequently, there is no good reason to leave it behind. Tuck one into your daypack the night before your trek.

    Cell Phone and Portable Charger

Always carry a charged cell phone on tracking day. Your phone helps you stay in contact with your travel guide, your driver, and your family back home. On top of that, it serves as a camera for the breathtaking moments you will encounter in the jungle. However, battery life drains faster in cold weather, so bring a fully charged power bank as a backup. Your guide or driver can also help you source a charger or power bank before you set off if you need one. Do not rely on lodges to charge your phone the morning of the trek — plan the night before.

Water Filter Bottle or Extra Water Bottle

The gorilla trek is physically demanding. You will climb steep hills, push through thick vegetation, and walk for several hours without rest. As a result, your body needs a steady supply of water throughout the hike. Carry at least two litres of water or one large water filter bottle. A filter bottle lets you refill from streams along the trail safely. Moreover, staying well-hydrated improves your energy levels and reduces the risk of headaches at altitude. Dehydration makes the hike feel far harder than it needs to be, so keep drinking water regularly even if you do not feel thirsty.

    A Pair of Binoculars

While gorillas are the main attraction, the forest is full of other wildlife. Rare birds, colobus monkeys, and countless other creatures live along the trekking routes. Many of them sit high in the canopy or deep in the undergrowth, far from the trail. Without binoculars, you will miss most of these sightings. Therefore, carry a lightweight pair to get close-up views without disturbing the animals. Besides wildlife, binoculars also let you spot the gorillas clearly before your group moves in for the official hour-long visit. They add real value to the overall experience.

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek include Garden Gloves

The jungle trail takes you through thick shrubs, stinging plants, and sharp vines. Your hands are often the first part of your body to make contact with the vegetation as you push through the bush. Consequently, a simple pair of garden gloves protects your skin from cuts, stings, and scratches. They also give you a better grip on branches and roots when you need to pull yourself up steep sections of the trail. Gloves are cheap to buy before you travel and easy to pack. Rangers and experienced guides strongly recommend them for every trekker.

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek include Wide-Brimmed Hat

A wide-brimmed hat does two important jobs on the trail. First, it shields your face and neck from the sun during open sections of the hike. Second, it helps keep rain out of your eyes when the forest showers arrive unexpectedly. Moreover, a hat keeps insects away from your face and helps regulate your body heat. If you do not own one before you travel, local craft markets in Uganda and Rwanda sell excellent wide-brimmed hats at very low prices. Pick one up on arrival — it is a worthwhile purchase that also serves as a great travel souvenir.

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek also include Long-Sleeved Shirts and Long Trousers

Always wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers on tracking day. Long clothing protects your skin from branches, thorns, insects, and the sun all at once. Choose trousers made from quick-dry or waterproof material, especially since you may kneel on wet ground when photographing the gorillas up close. Quick-dry fabric also handles slippery, muddy slopes better than denim or cotton. For women, wear a comfortable and supportive sports bra, as the hike involves long stretches of uphill walking. Avoid shorts and skirts entirely — they leave your legs exposed to scratches and insect bites throughout the trek.

What to Wear On a Gorilla Trek also include Waterproof Hiking Boots

Your choice of footwear can make or break the gorilla trek experience. The forest terrain is permanently wet, hilly, and often muddy. Flat shoes, sandals, and sneakers offer no grip on these slippery slopes and leave your feet cold and soaked within minutes. Instead, wear waterproof hiking boots that cover your ankles fully. Good ankle support prevents sprains on uneven ground, and a thick rubber sole grips the wet trail firmly. Break in your boots before you travel so they do not cause blisters on the day. Well-fitted waterproof boots are the single most important piece of equipment you can bring.

    Sunblock Cream and Insect Repellent

Apply sunblock to all exposed skin before you start the hike. The equatorial sun is strong, even on cloudy days, and UV levels are higher at altitude. Additionally, sunblock creates an extra barrier that discourages insects from landing on your skin. Combine it with a separate insect repellent for full protection. Mosquitoes and other insects are active in the forest, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. Apply both products before you leave the lodge and carry the repellent in your daypack for reapplication during the trek. Skin protection is a small effort that makes a big difference over a long day outdoors.

    Consider Hiring a Porter

Hiring a porter is one of the best decisions you can make before the trek begins. Local porters carry part of your luggage, which reduces physical strain and lets you focus entirely on the experience around you. They are strong, experienced, and know the trails well. Furthermore, hiring a porter directly supports the local community by providing income to families near the tracking areas. The fee is modest and worth every penny. Your travel company or guide can arrange a porter easily on the morning of the trek. Many experienced trekkers say their porter was one of the highlights of the entire journey.

     Packed Lunch and Energy Snacks

The gorilla trek lasts several hours and burns a lot of energy. As a result, always carry packed food and snacks to fuel your body on the trail. Bananas, energy bars, nuts, and sandwiches are practical and easy to carry. Your driver-guide can help you buy these items the evening before the trek in the nearest town in Uganda or Rwanda. Do not rely on finding food along the route — there are no shops or cafes in the forest. Eating small amounts regularly keeps your energy steady and prevents fatigue during the final, often steepest, leg of the hike.

    IMPORTANT REMINDER

Always carry your gorilla trekking permit and your passport on tracking day. Rangers check these documents at the pre-tracking briefing held before every trek. Missing either item can prevent you from joining the group, even if you hold a valid permit. Keep them in a waterproof zip-lock bag inside your daypack to protect them from rain on the trail.
