Do I have to Hire a Porter On a Gorilla Trek?

Do I have to Hire a Porter? It is highly recommended to hire a porter during your gorilla trek, even if you feel physically fit to handle the terrain, altitude, humidity, and carrying your daypack. For a small fee of around USD 20, you will not only make your trek more comfortable but also contribute to the livelihood of local communities.

Many porters are former poachers who have transitioned to conservation-related work. Without alternative means of earning a living, some may face the temptation to return to illegal activities. These may include such as poaching for bush meat or wildlife trafficking. Poaching syndicates often offer attractive incentives to impoverished villagers with limited opportunities, making conservation-based employment a crucial alternative. By hiring a porter, you directly support conservation efforts and provide sustainable income to local communities.

It’s important to remember that every legally employed person in Africa supports an average of seven to nine others. Conservation thrives when local communities are involved, so the more porters engaged in this work, the greater the positive impact on both people and wildlife.

Do I Have to Hire a Porter- Packing List For Gorilla trekking that requires hiring one

Do I Have to Hire a Porter?-Packing list. When preparing for a gorilla trekking safari with kids in Uganda or Rwanda, here are essential items to pack for a smooth and enjoyable adventure:

    • Hiking Safari Boots: Protect your feet from rough terrain and ensure a safe walk.
    • Camera: To capture the once-in-a-lifetime experience of gorilla trekking.
    • Binoculars: For a closer look at distant wildlife and jungle features.
    • Sweater or Warm Layer: It can get chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings, due to the high humidity.
    • Waterproof Backpack: To carry your trekking gear safely in case of rain.
    • Insect Repellent: To protect from biting insects, especially in humid areas.
    • Bug Spray: For use in your accommodation to keep bugs at bay.
    • Toiletries: In case your lodge doesn’t provide them.
    • Garden Gloves: To protect your hands from stinging nettles or rough jungle surfaces.
    • Shoe Bag: For storing muddy or wet shoes when you’re done trekking.
    • Duffel Bag: For transporting your luggage, especially if you need to carry it to your room.
    • Extra Fully Charged Batteries: You’ll be taking plenty of photos, so spare batteries are a must.
    • Safari Long-Sleeved Shirt and Trousers: To protect against insects and sun exposure.
    • Extra Clothes: For after the trek, especially if you need to change after a shower.
    • Travel Adapter and Charger: Ensure you can charge your devices, especially in remote areas.
    • Rainproof Gear: The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to be prepared for rain.
    • Flip Flops: Comfortable footwear to wear after a day in closed shoes.
    • First Aid Kit: For any minor injuries or emergencies that may arise.

Preparing Physically for a Gorilla Trek

Do I Have to Hire a Porter?- how to physically prepare for gorilla trekking. Keeping your body prepared for hiking is essential, as the Virunga region’s rugged terrain—shaped by volcanic activity—features ridges and plateaus where mountain gorillas roam throughout the day. Tracking these gorillas requires trekking through slopes and valleys, which can be physically demanding, especially for those who are not accustomed to hiking. Without adequate preparation, muscle fatigue and strains may make the experience more challenging.

In some cases, even reaching the starting point of your gorilla trek may require a hike, depending on where the gorillas were last spotted the previous day.

You don’t need to spend hours in the gym, but engaging in light physical activity beforehand can make a significant difference. Simple exercises such as extended walks, stair climbing, or short hikes can help condition your muscles and improve endurance, ensuring you enjoy the trek without unnecessary strain.

What is the Price of A Gorilla Permit in Uganda?

A permit is a document that indicates that you are liable to partake in gorilla trekking in Uganda. The price of a standard gorilla trekking permit by the Uganda Wildlife Authority in Uganda is $800 per person, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for Rest of African citizens, and Ugx300,000 for East African Citizens. This permit allows you to spend an hour in the presence of mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. For the gorilla habituation experience, the permit costs $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents. It also costs $1000 for the Rest of African Citizens and foreign residents, and Ugx750,000 for East African Citizens. The gorilla habituation permit allows you to spend 4 hours in the presence of the mountain gorillas. The experience is available exclusively in the Rushaga Sector in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and sometimes in the Nkuringo Sector.

How Can I Book a Gorilla Permit in Uganda?

The most reliable and secure way to book a gorilla permit in Uganda is through a licensed local tour operator, such as (Company name). We are authorized to work directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the government body responsible for managing wildlife conservation and tourism activities in Uganda.

Currently, the Uganda Wildlife Authority permits only locally licensed tour companies to purchase gorilla permits on behalf of travelers. By booking through an experienced tour operator, you ensure a hassle-free process, access to expert advice, and assistance in securing permits for your preferred trekking dates. Once you contact us, we instantly check for the availability of gorilla permits on your desired dates. Once we confirm availability, we will ask you for details such as your name, citizenship, age, and your passport copies. You’ll then make payment for the gorilla permits, after which we’ll purchase them and send you scanned copies.

When to Book a Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit

You need to book a gorilla trekking or habituation permit in advance, say 6 months before your tracking date. This is because the availability of permits changes swiftly, yet there are few permits available. Daily, there are 192 gorilla trekking permits and 8 gorilla habituation permits available in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and 8 in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These are few depending on the number of visitors who want to do the activity in Uganda. Therefore, you need to purchase them early enough so that you don’t miss out on the activity. Uganda Wildlife Authority sells these permits on a first come first serve basis.

What is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which occur from June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are less muddy, making trekking easier. Additionally, the dry weather enhances your chances of spotting gorillas as they tend to move closer to accessible areas.

While the wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring more challenging trekking conditions, they also offer fewer crowds and lush vegetation, which is perfect for photography enthusiasts. Also, the lodges tend to offer discounts to attract tourists to stay at their establishments.

What is the age limit for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Uganda Wildlife Authority set the age limit for gorilla trekking in Uganda at 15 years and above. This restriction ensures the safety of both trekkers and the gorillas. Younger children are more likely to transmit common illnesses, such as colds or flu, to the gorillas, which gorillas may contract. Additionally, the physical demands and potential risks of trekking through dense forests make it unsuitable for younger participants. Also, young people may be frightened by their first sight of the gorillas, which may make them scream or react in a way that may frighten the gorillas as well.
