Best Time of the Year To Trek Gorillas

Gorilla tracking in Rwanda ranks among the world’s greatest wildlife adventures. Indeed, every year, thousands of travelers fly to this small East African nation to meet mountain gorillas face to face. The journey first takes you through Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital, and then up into the misty jungles of the Virunga Mountains. From there, deep in dense forest, you sit just metres from a wild gorilla family. In that stillness, you hear them breathe, chew, and grunt. Suddenly, you lock eyes with a massive silverback. Nothing prepares you for that moment. With all of this in mind, this guide covers everything you need to plan your gorilla safari in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

    Where the Gorillas Live

Volcanoes National Park sits in northwest Rwanda, covering 160 square kilometres of rainforest across five volcanic slopes. Furthermore, the park forms part of a larger 433 sq km conservation zone shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rising dramatically from within the park, the Virunga Mountains climb steeply from 2,400 to 4,507 metres above sea level. Mount Karisimbi, at 4,507 metres, stands as the tallest peak. Alongside it, other major peaks include Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura. Together, they create one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.

Beyond its geology, the park is equally remarkable for its wildlife. Notably, it protects endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalos, and over 170 bird species. Even more remarkably, at least 13 bird species exist only in the Virungas. Adding to this rich legacy, the famous primatologist Dian Fossey worked here and helped lay the foundation for gorilla tourism and conservation.

Why Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda Matters

Mountain gorillas nearly went extinct due to human activity. Thanks to conservationists like Dian Fossey and George Schaller, the world changed how it viewed these animals. They showed that gorillas are gentle, intelligent, and deeply social — much like humans.

Today, over 1,000 mountain gorillas live across the Virunga Mountains. That number keeps growing. Gorilla tourism helps fund their protection. Your permit fee directly supports conservation and local communities.

Furthermore, the experience changes how you think. When a gorilla looks at you with calm, curious eyes, the distance between human and ape disappears. It is a rare and humbling moment that most visitors never forget.

    The Gorilla Tracking Experience

Tracking starts at 7:00 am at the park headquarters in Kinigi. Importantly, you must arrive by 7:00 am sharp, as missing that time risks losing your permit. For this reason, most visitors choose to stay overnight at a nearby lodge the night before.

Promptly at 7:30 am, rangers hold a short briefing, during which they explain the rules and assign each group to a specific gorilla family. Following the briefing, you drive to your trailhead and begin your hike into the forest.

The trek itself unfolds in two stages. First, you walk from the car park to the forest edge, which takes around 30 to 60 minutes. Then, you enter the forest and begin searching for the gorillas. Meanwhile, trained advance trackers have already located the gorillas before you arrive. As a result, once inside the forest, you typically reach the gorillas within 20 to 30 minutes. That said, on some days, it can take up to two hours.

Once you finally find the gorilla family, you spend exactly one hour with them. Throughout that hour, you watch them feed, play, groom each other, and interact. In particular, young gorillas often approach visitors out of curiosity, while silverbacks may glance at you calmly before returning to their meal. Almost inevitably, the hour passes far too quickly.

Rules and Safety Protocols for Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda

Rwanda takes gorilla safety seriously. You must follow strict rules at all times.

    • Keep at least 10 metres away from the gorillas.
    • Wear a fresh surgical mask near the gorillas.
    • Sanitise your hands and shoes before approaching.
    • Do not eat or use the toilet near the gorillas.
    • Do not smoke anywhere inside the park.
    • Turn away from the gorillas if you feel a sneeze coming.
    • Test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours before your visit.

Gorillas are highly vulnerable to human diseases. A single respiratory infection can spread through an entire family and cause multiple deaths. Rangers enforce these rules strictly. Even so, curious gorillas sometimes break the 10-metre rule themselves — and that is perfectly fine.

Habituated gorillas have never seriously harmed a tourist. Still, you must listen to your guide at all times. An adult gorilla has the strength of about 20 strong men. Respect goes a long way.

How Hard Is the Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda

This is the question most visitors ask first. The honest answer is: it depends.

The hike varies greatly by group. The trek to the Sabyinyo Group is the easiest and most popular for older visitors or those with lower fitness levels. The trail is mostly flat with gentle slopes. In contrast, the trek to the Susa Group is the most demanding. It involves a steep, long ascent on Mount Karisimbi. Some visitors report taking up to seven hours to find the Susa Group on a difficult day.

Treks to Kwitonda, Hirwa, and Group Thirteen (Agashya) sit in the middle — manageable for most adults. The Amahoro and Umubano Groups require moderate to strong fitness.

Additionally, weather affects difficulty. Mud and wet vegetation after rain make slopes slippery and exhausting. Vegetation density also matters. You may need to crawl under thick vines or push through stinging nettles.

Altitude adds another challenge. Gorilla tracking happens between 2,500 and 3,000 metres. At that height, even fit hikers feel short of breath. If you fly in from a low-altitude city, your body needs time to adjust. Spending a day or two in Nairobi (2,300m) or Kigali (1,500m) before the trek helps a great deal.

In summary, most visitors find the hike much easier than expected. Once the adrenaline kicks in at the first gorilla sighting, any tiredness disappears instantly.

Tips to make Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda easier

    • Hire a porter for about $20 to carry your bag.
    • Use the walking stick your guide provides.
    • Wear waterproof hiking boots with ankle support.
    • Drink plenty of water and bring energy snacks.
    • Take breaks whenever you need them — guides always match the slowest person’s pace.

    The 12 Habituated Gorilla Groups

Rwanda currently has 12 gorilla groups open to tourists. Each group has a unique character and location. Here is a quick overview:

Sabyinyo Group (15 members) — Easiest to reach. Located on a gentle saddle between Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga.

Agashya/Group Thirteen (26 members) — Usually easy to reach. Often shares territory with the Sabyinyo Group.

Susa Group (19 members) — Hardest to reach but most rewarding. Located high on Mount Karisimbi. Best for very fit trekkers.

Amahoro Group (21 members) — Intermediate difficulty. Located on Mount Bisoke.

Umubano Group (14 members) — Also on Mount Bisoke. Moderate trek difficulty.

Kwitonda Group — Lower slopes of Mount Muhabura. Relatively easy trek.

Hirwa Group (13 members) — Foothills of Mount Sabyinyo. Usually an easy to moderate trek.

Karisimbi, Isimbi, Igisha Groups — These split from the original Susa Group. Located on Mount Karisimbi. Challenging terrain.

Kwisanga Group (18 members) — The newest group, formed in May 2021 from a split within the Kwitonda family.

Muhoza Group (10 members) — One silverback. Occasionally open to tourism.

Rangers at Kinigi match trekkers to groups based on fitness. If you prefer a specific group, arrive early and speak to the rangers directly.

    Gorilla Permits and Booking

A Rwanda gorilla tracking permit costs $1,500 per person. The price includes park entrance. Only trekkers aged 15 and above may purchase a permit.

Rwanda Development Board (RDB) issues eight permits per day for each of the 12 habituated groups. That gives a daily total of 96 permits across the park.

Permits sell out fast, especially between June and September. Book 6 to 12 months in advance to secure your spot. You can buy permits through the RDB office in Kigali, the IREMBO official website, or through a registered tour operator.

The best months for gorilla tracking are mid-December to early February and June to September. These are the dry seasons when trails are firmer and conditions are more comfortable. However, gorillas are present year-round. April and May see fewer visitors, so permits are easier to find then.

Where to Stay for Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda

No accommodation exists inside the park. However, several lodges sit close to the Kinigi visitor centre. Options cover every budget:

When it comes to accommodation, options span every budget level. At the top end, the most exclusive choices include Bisate Lodge (from $1,750/person/night), Singita Kwitonda (from $1,950/person/night), Virunga Lodge (from $1,210/person/night), Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (from $970/person/night), and One & Only Gorilla’s Nest (from $750/person/night).

Stepping down a tier, mid-range travelers are equally well catered for, with options such as Amakoro Songa Lodge (from $720/person), Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel (from $300/night), and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (from $230/person/night).

For those travelling on a tighter budget, however, there is still a practical and popular solution. Budget travelers often base themselves in Musanze town, about 12 km away, and simply drive to Kinigi each morning.

    What to Bring

Pack light but smart. Bring a waterproof daypack, a light rain jacket, hiking boots, gaiters, a cap, sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera, binoculars, water, and energy snacks. A porter handles your heavy bag on the trail.

Gorilla tracking in Rwanda is expensive, physically demanding, and logistically complex. Yet, it consistently ranks as one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on earth. The moment you sit quietly in the forest and watch a silverback gorilla go about his day — peaceful, powerful, and utterly real — you understand exactly why.
