Why Fly Into Kigali Instead of Entebbe?

Kigali can put you much closer to Uganda’s gorilla country
The main reason to fly into Kigali International Airport instead of Entebbe International Airport is geography. Kigali lies much closer to parts of southwestern Uganda than Entebbe does. If your main objective is gorilla trekking in Uganda, particularly in southern Bwindi or Mgahinga, entering through Rwanda can remove several hours of road travel from the beginning of your safari.
This is especially valuable on a two-, three- or four-day gorilla trip. Instead of spending most of your first day travelling across Uganda from Entebbe, you can arrive in Kigali, meet your driver-guide and travel through Rwanda’s rolling highlands toward the Uganda border before continuing into gorilla country.
However, Kigali is not a universal replacement for Entebbe. If your itinerary includes Kibale Forest, Murchison Falls, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Kampala, Lake Mburo or a broader circuit through Uganda, arriving through Entebbe may create a much more logical safari route. The airport should fit the itinerary—not the other way around.
Three reasons Kigali makes sense for a short Uganda gorilla safari
The advantage is not simply that Kigali is an international gateway. It is the relationship between Kigali, the Rwanda–Uganda border and Uganda’s southwestern gorilla destinations.
Kigali vs Entebbe for a Uganda gorilla safari
The difference becomes most obvious when your first destination is Bwindi or Mgahinga.
| Planning Factor | Fly Into Kigali | Fly Into Entebbe |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Bwindi access | Often around 3–5 hours depending on sector, border and road conditions | Typically a full-day road journey of roughly 8–10 hours |
| International border | Yes — Rwanda to Uganda | No border crossing when travelling entirely within Uganda |
| Best trip style | Short gorilla trips and Rwanda–Uganda combinations | Longer Uganda circuits and fly-in Uganda safaris |
| Mgahinga access | Very practical through southwestern Uganda | Long road transfer unless using a domestic flight |
| Kibale / Murchison / central Uganda | Usually less logical as the primary gateway | Usually more natural for a complete Uganda circuit |
| Two-country experience | Easy to incorporate Rwanda and Uganda | Possible, but requires routing toward Rwanda later |

Not every part of Bwindi is equally convenient from Kigali
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is not a single entrance with every gorilla group starting from the same place. Its principal trekking areas include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. That matters enormously when choosing your arrival airport.
For a Kigali-based itinerary, Rushaga and Nkuringo in southern Bwindi are particularly important because they fit naturally with the cross-border route through southwestern Uganda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, near Kisoro, can also work extremely well from Kigali.
Buhoma and Ruhija can still be included, but transfer times and route design need more attention. A traveller should therefore avoid booking an arbitrary Bwindi lodge first and trying to make the transport work afterwards.
The better sequence is: check gorilla permit availability → confirm trekking sector → choose accommodation in the correct area → build the airport and transfer plan around those confirmed arrangements.

The real advantage is not kilometres—it is safari time
A shorter transfer changes what is possible within a compact itinerary.
After a long international flight, a shorter road transfer can be considerably more comfortable than immediately committing to a full day across Uganda.
Extra time can be used for Kigali, Lake Mutanda, Batwa cultural experiences, golden monkeys or simply a less rushed arrival at your lodge.
A two- or three-day Uganda gorilla safari becomes practical from Kigali in a way that would be much more demanding when travelling entirely by road from Entebbe.
Accommodation should follow your gorilla trekking sector
Accommodation is particularly important on a safari starting in Kigali because the value of the shorter route depends on where you actually stay. A lodge can be advertised as being “in Bwindi” while still being inconvenient for the trekking sector printed on your permit.
If you are trekking in Rushaga, stay around Rushaga. For Nkuringo, accommodation in the Nkuringo area is normally the sensible choice. Travellers trekking in Mgahinga can stay near the park or around Kisoro, depending on the style of accommodation and other activities planned.
This matters because gorilla trekking begins early. You want to reach the appropriate park briefing point without turning trekking morning into another long road transfer.
Accommodation Rule
Permit first. Lodge second.
Do not choose a lodge purely from photographs, price or online reviews before confirming the trekking sector.
Budget, midrange or luxury—which makes sense?
The best accommodation category depends on your budget, but location should remain the first consideration.
Budget
Suitable for travellers who prioritise the gorilla experience over elaborate lodge facilities. Look for clean rooms, reliable meals, hot water and—most importantly—a practical location near the correct trekking point.
Midrange
Often the sweet spot for a Uganda gorilla safari. Midrange lodges typically provide more comfortable rooms, attractive forest or mountain settings and a stronger overall lodge experience without reaching premium luxury pricing.
Luxury
Luxury accommodation can add exceptional views, refined dining, personalised service and more spacious rooms. It is especially worthwhile for honeymoons, milestone trips and travellers who want the lodge to be an important part of the safari rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
A Common Planning Mistake
“Bwindi accommodation” is not specific enough
When comparing lodges online, travellers sometimes assume that any property described as being near Bwindi will work for any gorilla permit. That can create difficult logistics because the park’s trekking sectors are separated by mountainous roads.
Before paying for a lodge, confirm the exact sector on your gorilla permit. A correctly positioned midrange lodge can make your safari more comfortable than a more luxurious property located in the wrong part of the park.

Flying into Kigali adds an international border crossing
The shorter road journey comes with one important extra step: you enter Rwanda first and then cross into Uganda. Your passport, visa eligibility and required travel documents must therefore be organised for the countries in your itinerary.
Entry requirements vary according to nationality and can change. Travellers should verify current requirements with the official Rwanda and Uganda immigration authorities before departure rather than relying solely on older travel information.
Where an appropriate multi-country visa arrangement is available for your nationality and itinerary, it may simplify a Rwanda–Uganda journey. Always confirm the current rules before applying.
Do not book flights based only on driving time. Check passport validity, visa requirements and your exact cross-border itinerary before confirming the gateway.
When Entebbe is the better airport
Kigali’s proximity to southwestern Uganda is compelling, but Entebbe becomes stronger when the safari expands beyond gorilla country.
You want Kibale chimpanzees
For a Uganda primate circuit involving Kibale Forest before continuing south toward Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi, Entebbe creates a logical progression without first entering Rwanda.
You want a full wildlife circuit
Travellers combining gorillas with game drives, boat safaris, chimpanzee trekking and several Uganda national parks often benefit from beginning at Entebbe.
You prefer a domestic flight
A domestic flight from Entebbe toward Kihihi or Kisoro can substantially reduce the long road transfer, making Entebbe competitive even for travellers whose primary goal is gorilla trekking.
You do not necessarily need to use the same airport twice
One of the most efficient solutions is an open-jaw itinerary: fly into Kigali and depart from Entebbe, or do the journey in reverse.
For example, you could arrive in Kigali, travel to southern Bwindi for gorilla trekking, continue through Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kibale Forest, then finish at Entebbe. This avoids retracing the entire route back to Rwanda and turns the airport decision into part of the safari design.
Important Distinction
Flying into Rwanda does not mean you need a Rwanda gorilla permit
You can land at Kigali International Airport, travel across the border and trek mountain gorillas in Uganda using a valid Uganda gorilla permit. The airport you use and the country where you trek are separate decisions.
For 2026, Uganda’s standard gorilla trekking permit for a foreign non-resident is USD 800 per person. Rwanda’s standard permit for international visitors is substantially higher, which is one reason travellers sometimes combine Kigali’s convenient geographic position with gorilla trekking on the Uganda side.
Price alone should not determine your choice. Trekking sector, available dates, accommodation style, terrain, transport and the rest of the safari should all be considered together.
Which airport fits your safari?
First-time gorilla traveller
Consider Kigali if your trip is primarily about Bwindi or Mgahinga and you have only a few days.
Wildlife and primate traveller
Consider Entebbe if gorillas are one part of a longer Uganda itinerary incorporating chimpanzees, savannah wildlife, boat safaris and multiple parks.
Rwanda + Uganda traveller
Kigali is often ideal. Explore Rwanda first and then cross into Uganda, or travel directly to gorilla country after arrival.
Luxury traveller
Compare Kigali with a domestic flight from Entebbe. A fly-in Uganda itinerary can reduce road time while avoiding an international land border.
Longer Uganda itinerary
Consider using both airports. Arrive through Kigali, travel north through Uganda and depart from Entebbe instead of backtracking.
Very short itinerary
Kigali generally has the advantage for southern Bwindi and Mgahinga because the road journey is considerably shorter.
Mistakes that can cancel out Kigali’s time advantage
Your preferred date or trekking sector may not be available. Checking permits first gives the itinerary a solid foundation.
It is not. Southern sectors generally fit the Kigali approach more naturally than some northern or eastern locations.
A lodge may be in the wider Bwindi region but still require an inconvenient transfer to your assigned trekking point.
A short road route is only useful when your immigration documents are correct for both countries.
International delays, immigration and road conditions make a buffer sensible. Arriving at your gorilla lodge the day before trekking is generally much more comfortable.
The best airport should improve your entire itinerary. If you later travel north through Uganda, finishing at Entebbe may be better than returning to Kigali.
The Bottom Line
Kigali is better for some Uganda safaris—not all of them
If your priority is gorilla trekking in southern Bwindi or Mgahinga, especially on a short itinerary, Kigali can be an exceptionally efficient gateway. You reduce the long road journey from central Uganda and gain the opportunity to combine Rwanda and Uganda naturally.
If your safari is designed around Uganda as a whole—chimpanzees in Kibale, game drives in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, the Nile and other destinations—Entebbe will often produce a more coherent route.
For many travellers, the strongest itinerary uses both gateways: arriving through Kigali and departing through Entebbe, or vice versa. The correct answer comes from designing the safari first and selecting the airport second.
Kigali vs Entebbe FAQs
Is Kigali closer to Bwindi than Entebbe?
Yes, particularly for southern Bwindi. Kigali to areas such as Rushaga and Nkuringo commonly takes roughly 3–5 hours depending on the border, stops, road conditions and exact lodge. Entebbe to Bwindi by road is normally a much longer full-day journey.
Can I fly into Rwanda and trek gorillas in Uganda?
Yes. You can arrive at Kigali International Airport, travel by road into Uganda and trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park using an Uganda gorilla permit.
Where should I stay if I enter Uganda through Kigali?
Your accommodation should correspond with your confirmed gorilla trekking sector. Rushaga accommodation is most practical for Rushaga permits, Nkuringo lodges for Nkuringo permits, while Kisoro and the Mgahinga area work well for Mgahinga trekking. Do not choose the lodge solely because it is described as being near Bwindi.
Should I book accommodation before my gorilla permit?
We generally recommend confirming gorilla permit availability and the trekking sector first. Once the sector is known, accommodation can be selected in the appropriate area. This avoids paying for a lodge that later proves inconvenient for your trekking starting point.
Which Bwindi sectors are best from Kigali?
Rushaga and Nkuringo in southern Bwindi are particularly practical for many Kigali-based itineraries. The correct choice should nevertheless depend on permit availability, lodge preferences, road conditions and the rest of your safari.
Is Mgahinga convenient from Kigali?
Yes. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies in southwestern Uganda near Kisoro and the Rwanda border, making Kigali a useful international gateway for short Mgahinga gorilla and golden monkey itineraries.
Is budget or luxury accommodation better for gorilla trekking?
Neither category is automatically better for the trek itself. The gorilla experience is conducted in the forest with designated park guides and rangers regardless of your lodge category. The main accommodation differences are comfort, service, setting, room quality and dining. Location near your confirmed trekking sector remains one of the most important considerations.
Can I arrive in Kigali and fly home from Entebbe?
Yes, and this can be one of the most efficient solutions for a longer Uganda itinerary. An open-jaw arrangement allows you to travel in one direction instead of spending safari time retracing the same road back to your original airport.
Is Entebbe still suitable for a short gorilla safari?
Yes, particularly when a domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro is included. Flying can substantially reduce road time and is worth comparing with the Kigali road option when comfort and time are priorities.
Should I book my international flight or gorilla permit first?
Ideally, check gorilla permit availability before committing to restrictive international flights. Gorilla permits are limited by date and trekking location. Once availability is confirmed, the airport, accommodation and transport route can be designed around the permit.
