Top 10 things to do when visiting Lake Kivu in Rwanda

Lake Kivu, One of Africa’s most gorgeous lakes is located approximately four and a half hours’ drive from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Lake Kivu, which spans Rwanda’s western border with Congo and Congo’s eastern border with Rwanda, is one of the largest bodies of water in the western branch of the enormous East African Rift Valley, ranking seventh in Africa overall.

It is very important to Rwanda, not only because of its gorgeous green waters, which attract tourists all year but also because of the methane recovered from the lake’s depths and used to generate power for local enterprises.

Surrounded by calm hills, the road drive itself is fascinating as you weave through the hills in suspense, catching views of the lake in the distance. The scenery is breathtaking, with glistering and glittering sun-kissed waters set against a backdrop of lush green hills and forests.

Lake Kivu is surrounded by densely populated fishing villages and towns, the most colorful of which is Rubavu (formerly known as Gisenyi), which is conveniently located on the lake’s northern edge—the ideal spot to spend an evening watching the golden reflection on the calm waters as the sun sets.

The town is studded with hotels, including the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Cormoran Lodge, and Kivu Paradise Resort, among others. Being close to Volcanoes National Park makes this town a popular destination for most travelers in the area. Trendy bars are scattered around the area for individuals who like a good night out.

Lake Kivu’s lush surroundings and sandy shoreline are an attraction for lengthy weekend vacations and holidays in the mostly landlocked country. It’s a little slice of heaven in an already lovely country, and it’s a must-see addition to your schedule after your gorilla trekking excursion in Volcanoes.

Few things to do at Lake Kivu

    Sportfishing (recreational fishing)

Sportfishing is a recreational and competitive fishing technique in which the fish is promptly returned to the water (also known as catch and release). This freshwater lake is home to a diverse range of fish species, including blue-spotted tilapia, Nile tilapia, Lake Tanganyika sardine, and redbreast tilapia, among others.

This adds interest to sportfishing games by increasing the likelihood of catching a specific species. For those who enjoy some competitive fitness, this will be an intriguing and enjoyable pastime.

    Boat Cruises

Lake Kivu is well-known for being hippo and crocodile-free. This is attributable to noxious gases in her crust, yet it makes for an ideal atmosphere for boat rides on the enormous body of water.

You can personalize your boat ride by visiting the various islands on the lake (Napoleon Island and her famous fruit bats, Amahoro Island, also known as One Bar Island), taking a romantic evening ride while watching the sunset, or even sharing a meal floating on the water surrounded by countless scenic features.

    Watersports

This is particularly popular among tourists, having fresh waters free of dangerous creatures. Lake Kivu is ideal for water sports such as windsurfing, paddling to the islands and back, water skiing, and kayaking.

    Hiking and Biking

Lake Kivu is bordered by lush green hills and nearby mountains. A trek is the ideal morning activity for a rewarding walk with a view of the lake and its beaches. Every curve provides a magnificent view of the shimmering waters and kaleidoscope of colors. This is an opportunity to learn more about the history and way of life of the inhabitants. The hills are ideal for biking and discovering new paths, connecting with the locals, and, of course, capturing pictures from every altitude for a better aerial view of the lake.

    Coffee Tour

This is another enjoyable and educational activity you may do when visiting Lake Kivu. Rwanda is a significant coffee producer and exporter; hence, coffee farms are found throughout the country, including the districts surrounding Lake Kivu.

You will learn how to choose, wash, dry, roast, and grind coffee, as well as savor a freshly brewed cup. Rwandan beans are ranked second best in the world based on home grounds. You may support Rwanda’s economic development by purchasing a bag or two to take home.

    Swimming

After an early morning hike or bike ride, a swim in the cool, pure waters is pleasant. The lake’s banks, which are free of crocodiles and hippos, are ideal for a leisurely dip on a sunny day. You can swim in approved locations with plenty of lifeguards on hand to help.

    Birding

There are quite a few water birds. Birders will see uncommon species such as the African woodpecker, sacred ibis, yellow-throated green bulb, knob-billed duck, and ashy flycatcher, among others. You may see all of this and more during your boat ride and island-hopping tours.

    Island Hopping

There is so much to see and discover on the islands, each with its distinct character. Check out Nyiramirundi Island. This is primarily for coffee tours because it houses a large coffee plantation. You can learn about the coffee-making process and, if feasible, drink a fresh cup before leaving.

You can also visit Napoleon Island, which got its name from how closely the island’s construction resembled Napoleon’s hat. The island is home to bats, eagles, numerous water buds, African millipedes, and water snakes.

Amahoro Island, often known as Peace Island, is another destination worth visiting. This is an excellent location for hiding out and enjoying the peace. Camping is an option, as is staying at one of the island’s hotels. There are more islands to check out while on your boat ride.

    Imbabazi Orphanage

The 1994 Rwandan Genocide left a large number of children orphaned. Rosamond Carr, a foreigner who has lived in the neighborhood for many years, witnessed firsthand the agony following this horrible era as well as the heartbreaking repercussions on the children who were left behind.

She established the Imbabazi Orphanage to provide shelter and assistance to these youngsters. Imbabazi is very important to the people in this area and has a significant impact on the community due to its success in raising children and contributing to their development. You may contribute to this change by checking it out and possibly making a little donation to the drive.

    Chilling on the Beach

Why not? Why go to the lake’s shores without taking advantage of the opportunity to relax and unwind? Numerous beach hotels and hangout locations provide excellent views of the lake while sunbathing, reading a book, or sipping your favorite drink to relax. Not every day calls for activities; sometimes you just want to sit back and enjoy the sun and the gentle air on your cheek. In the evening, the most spectacular sights as the sun sets over the lake will be the ideal way to end your day, meet up with your friends, relax, and recharge.
