Birding at Entebbe Botanical Gardens
Birding at Entebbe Botanical Gardens Nestled gracefully on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake, the Entebbe Botanical Gardens (now the National Botanical Gardens) offers a captivating haven for bird enthusiasts. Located just 35 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, these gardens beckon with their lush beauty, encompassing a harmonious blend of indigenous forests, horticultural wonders, and cultivated landscapes. For birdwatchers, this exquisite blend provides an irresistible attraction, making the gardens a prime destination for avian exploration.
Established in 1901, the National Botanical Gardens originally served as a pivotal research center. Its primary purpose was the examination and development of Uganda’s rich agricultural resources. The historical significance lies in its role as the nursery bed where the first tea seeds, imported from India in 1923, were initially planted. The gardens also hold proximity to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (formerly known as Entebbe Zoo), a mere five-minute journey away.
Within the serene embrace of the Botanical Gardens, a diverse array of bird species thrives, offering birdwatchers an exceptional opportunity to observe and appreciate nature’s avian wonders.
