6 Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari is one of Uganda’s most exciting wildlife adventures. It takes you deep into the country’s largest conservation area, covering 3,893 square kilometers across four districts. The park sits about 280 kilometers from Kampala. Inside, you will find stunning waterfalls, rare animals, ancient forests, and the mighty River Nile. This safari combines game drives, boat cruises, rhino tracking, and chimpanzee trekking into one rich experience. Whether you travel in luxury or on a mid-range budget, this trip delivers unforgettable memories in the heart of East Africa.

    About Murchison Falls National Park

The park was established in 1952 during Uganda’s colonial era. It is home to 76 recorded mammals and hundreds of bird species. Furthermore, it holds one of the highest populations of Nile crocodiles on the continent. The park also houses more Rothschild giraffes than anywhere else in East Africa. In addition, wildlife authorities now recognize it as an official lion conservation unit. At the heart of the park lies its star attraction — the Murchison Falls. British explorer Sir Samuel Baker named these waterfalls. The Nile River forces its powerful waters through a narrow gorge, then drops 141 feet down a sheer cliff. The result is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the world.

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport

Your safari begins the moment you land. A driver-guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport and transfers you directly to your hotel. Luxury travelers check into the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel. Mid-range travelers head to Karibu Guesthouse. Both options offer a warm and comfortable place to rest after your journey. You spend the evening settling in, enjoying dinner, and preparing for the exciting days ahead.

Day 2: Drive to Murchison Falls with a Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The driver-guide picks you up at 8:00 am. From there, you begin the road journey north toward Murchison Falls. Along the way, you pass through Kampala city, then through the towns of Luwero and Nakasongola. Luwero holds deep historical significance — it is where Uganda’s current government launched its guerrilla war. As you drive through Nakasongola, you will notice vast farms and pastoralists tending their long-horned Ankole cattle. Roadside vendors sell fresh milk in large jerry cans. You can stop to sample fresh local fruits. Ugandan fruits are especially sweet because they receive abundant direct sunlight as they grow.

Meanwhile, your first major stop is the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The sanctuary was built in 1998 to protect Uganda’s remaining wild rhinos. Poaching had completely wiped out rhinos from all national parks and reserves across the country. Today, the sanctuary protects these animals and runs a careful breeding program to grow their numbers. The long-term goal is to return rhinos to Uganda’s national parks. A sanctuary ranger accompanies you on a rhino tracking walk. The ranger introduces you to the rhinos and explains the breeding program in detail. Beyond the rhinos, Ziwa also offers excellent birding, nature walks, and primate sightings.

After lunch, you continue the drive to Murchison Falls National Park. Your first stop inside the park is the top of the falls. Standing at the edge, you watch the Nile squeeze through a gorge just seven meters wide before crashing powerfully downward. Luxury travelers stay at Paraa Safari Lodge. Mid-range travelers rest at Murchison River Lodge.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Cruise

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before the morning game drive begins. The driver-guide leads you into the most wildlife-rich section of the park. Morning is the best time to spot animals because they are most active during the cooler hours. They move out to feed, drink, and socialize before the midday heat sets in. As a result, sightings are frequent and rewarding. You can also catch nocturnal animals — leopards, hyenas, and owls — heading back to their resting spots.

During the game drive, expect to encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and a variety of antelope. The drive lasts about three hours. Afterward, you return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest.

In the afternoon, you board a boat for a cruise along the River Nile. The boat moves upstream toward the base of Murchison Falls. On both banks, you spot some of the world’s largest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles. Elephants come down to the river’s edge to drink. Thousands of water birds fill the sky above the water. Then, as the boat draws closer to the falls, the roar of the water grows louder. The view from below is even more powerful than the view from the top. It is a moment that stays with you long after the trip ends. You return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest of the  6 Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari

Wake up early and take a hearty breakfast. Today, the focus shifts from large mammals to our closest relatives — chimpanzees. Budongo Forest lies within the Murchison Falls conservation area. It is one of the best places in Uganda to see wild chimpanzees. Before you set out, put on light hiking shoes and wear long trousers. These protect you in the forest terrain.

A ranger leads a short briefing before the trek begins. The briefing covers forest rules, what to expect, and how to behave around the chimps. Then you head into the forest. Budongo is notably large and dense. The forest holds the biggest collection of mahogany trees in all of East Africa. These trees provide shelter and food to chimpanzees and a wide variety of birds. Carry binoculars so you can spot chimps and other primates high in the canopy. Over 360 bird species live in Budongo, which makes it a paradise for birders as well.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo is the most popular activity in the park. It combines excitement, physical activity, and a deep connection with nature. After the trek, you move to a lodge closer to Budongo. Luxury travelers check into Chobe Safari Lodge. Mid-range travelers stay at Budongo Eco Lodge.

Day 5: Leisure Day and Optional Activities of the 6-Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari

Today belongs entirely to you. Wake up at your own pace and enjoy a relaxed breakfast. There is no fixed schedule. Instead, you choose how to spend the day. If you still want more wildlife action, ask the driver-guide to take you for a game drive in the park’s southern section. This area is less visited and often delivers quiet, intimate wildlife encounters.

Alternatively, step away from the bush and connect with local communities. A cultural visit to a nearby village gives you a glimpse into everyday life near the park. You meet local people, learn about their traditions, and share in their warmth. Another option is to relax at the lodge — read a book, sit by the river, or watch the birds from your veranda. Both Chobe Safari Lodge and Budongo Eco Lodge are peaceful places to unwind.

Day 6: Departure to Entebbe or Kampala

Your final day has arrived. Wake up at your own time, enjoy one last breakfast in the wilderness, and begin packing. Your driver-guide loads your luggage and prepares for the return journey. Make sure you are ready at the agreed departure time so you reach Entebbe or Kampala in time for your outbound flight. As the park disappears in the rearview mirror, you carry with you memories of thundering waterfalls, roaming elephants, playful chimpanzees, and golden Nile sunsets.
