Hardships of Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is generally easier than in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, but it still comes with challenges. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and uneven, and the high altitude may affect some trekkers. A moderate fitness level is recommended, and the trek lasts between 1 to 6 hours, depending on the gorilla family’s location. Safari Vacations and Travel Services Ltd stands out as a top provider of gorilla trekking safaris, offering expert guides, well-organized treks, and reliable permit booking for an unforgettable experience with mountain gorillas. Hardships of Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

    Key Challenges:

    Terrain:

The trails in Volcanoes National Park can be steep, muddy, and uneven, especially in the dense bamboo and rainforest areas. These conditions can make the trek physically demanding, as trekkers navigate through slippery and challenging terrain. While the trails are generally better maintained than those in other parks like Bwindi, they still require careful footing and can be exhausting, particularly for those unaccustomed to such conditions. Trekking poles and sturdy footwear are recommended for better stability during the hike, ensuring trekkers can manage the difficult path with more ease and safety.

    Altitude:

Volcanoes National Park is located at a high elevation ranging from 2,400 to 4,507 meters (7,874 to 14,783 feet). The altitude can make the trek more challenging, especially for individuals who are not acclimatized to higher elevations. It can lead to fatigue or altitude sickness for some trekkers, making the physical exertion more difficult. The air is thinner, and oxygen levels are lower, which can slow down progress. It’s essential for trekkers to take it slow and stay hydrated to minimize the effects of altitude sickness and manage the strenuous conditions better.

    Duration:

The duration of a gorilla trekking expedition in Volcanoes National Park can range from 1 to 6 hours. The trek’s length depends on where the gorilla group is located within the park, as some are closer to the starting point, while others require a longer hike. Trekkers should be prepared for the possibility of a longer journey, especially when the gorillas are located at a greater distance. The trek can be physically demanding, and trekkers must pace themselves, as the longer duration increases the challenge. Guides ensure trekkers are supported and take breaks as needed to maintain energy throughout the hike.

    Weather:

The weather in Volcanoes National Park can be unpredictable, with frequent rain showers that make the trails muddy and slippery. Trekkers often face wet, uncomfortable conditions, especially during the wet season from April to November. The rain can also make the terrain more challenging to navigate, increasing the difficulty of the trek. Even during drier months, the weather can shift quickly, and trekkers may encounter rain or mist, which can reduce visibility. Being prepared with waterproof gear, proper clothing, and sturdy footwear is essential to handle these unpredictable weather conditions and ensure a safer and more comfortable trekking experience.

    Fitness Level:

A moderate level of fitness is required for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. While the trek is manageable for most people, those who are not accustomed to hiking or physical exertion may find it challenging. The conditions include steep, muddy, and uneven trails, requiring strength, stamina, and endurance. Trekking can last several hours, and maintaining energy throughout the journey is essential. For those who may need assistance, porters are available to carry gear or provide extra support, making the trek more accessible for individuals with lower fitness levels. However, a reasonable level of fitness is still highly recommended for the best experience.

    Age Restrictions:

To ensure safety and well-being, trekkers must be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. This age restriction is in place because the trek is physically demanding and requires responsible behavior and awareness. Younger children may struggle with the challenging terrain and long hikes, which could affect the group’s safety. Additionally, the presence of young children could disturb the mountain gorillas, which is why the age limit is enforced. Those under 15 are not permitted on the trek, and trekkers are encouraged to respect this rule to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved.

How Hard is Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park?

While the trek can be physically challenging, the experience of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat makes it incredibly rewarding. Porters are available to assist trekkers by carrying gear or offering support throughout the hike.

About Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park:

Located in northwest Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is home to endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking occurs once daily, with 8 visitors assigned to each gorilla group. Trekkers must report to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) at 7 am for a briefing about gorilla tracking. Afterward, trekkers are divided into groups and assigned to their gorilla families.

Once assigned, an armed ranger guide leads the trek to locate the gorillas. The journey can take anywhere from minutes to several hours, depending on the family’s location. Trekkers spend one hour with the gorillas once they’re found. It’s essential to follow the rules given during the briefing for both your safety and that of the gorillas.

Booking a Gorilla Trekking Safari in Rwanda:

To participate in gorilla trekking, securing a permit through the Rwanda Development Board is required in advance. After confirming your travel dates, contact Safari Vacations and Travel Services Ltd to check permit availability. After confirming availability, we will send you an online invoice for payment. Once payment is received, the permit will be purchased, and a scanned copy will be provided for your confirmation.

Cost of Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park:

The cost of a gorilla permit depends on residency:

    • USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents
    • USD 500 for foreign residents
    • USD 200 for East African citizens
This permit grants access to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas. Additional costs for transport, accommodation, and guiding services are also required.

    Best Time for Gorilla Trekking:

The best time to trek is during the dry season, from June to October and December to March. The mild rainfall during these months makes trekking easier. The vegetation is less dense, providing better visibility for sightings and photographs. In contrast, during the wet season (April, May, and November), taller vegetation can make treks more challenging and sightings less clear. However, treks tend to be shorter since the gorillas don’t need to travel far for food.

    Where to Stay:

Volcanoes National Park offers various accommodation options, from budget to luxury. Luxury choices include Sabinyo Silverback Lodge, Bisate Lodge, Virunga Volcanoes Lodge, Five Volcanoes Hotel, and Mountain Gorillas’ Nest Lodge, with prices ranging from USD 300 to USD 1,000 per person per night.

Mid-range options include Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Lebambou Gorilla Lodge, and Davinci Lodge. For budget travelers, Kinigi Hotel, Hotel Muhabura, Gorilla Solution Lodge, and La Palme Hotel offer affordable stays.

With its well-organized treks and high likelihood of encountering mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park promises an unforgettable wildlife adventure for all visitors.
