Combining Uganda Gorillas with a Traditional Safari

Combining Uganda Gorillas with a Traditional Safari. If you combine gorilla trekking in Uganda with other safari activities, you create a well-rounded and enriching African adventure. After the thrilling encounter with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga, you can continue your journey with game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where tree-climbing lions, elephants, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species await. For those seeking more primate experiences, Kibale Forest National Park offers unforgettable chimpanzee trekking. The activity allows you to observe these intelligent primates in their natural habitat. To balance the adventure with relaxation, Lake Bunyonyi provides a peaceful escape with its scenic islands and calm waters, perfect for unwinding after the trek.

Beyond wildlife, Uganda also offers meaningful cultural experiences, where you can visit local communities, engage with traditional dances, learn about local crafts, and connect with the heritage of the Batwa and other tribes. For travelers looking to broaden their safari, Uganda can easily be combined with neighboring destinations such as Kenya and Tanzania, where the vast savannahs and iconic wildebeest migration present another dimension of Africa’s wilderness. This combination of primate encounters, classic game safaris, cultural immersion, and relaxation ensures a truly diverse safari experience that captures the very best of East Africa.

Top Uganda Safari activities to combine with gorilla trekking

    Game Drives

Game drives in Uganda provide an incredible opportunity to explore the country’s diverse national parks and encounter its rich wildlife. From spotting lions, elephants, and buffaloes to witnessing unique bird species, these guided adventures immerse travelers in the natural beauty of Uganda’s savannah landscapes, offering unforgettable experiences of Africa’s untamed wilderness and its most iconic creatures. Below are some of the national parks in Uganda popular for game drive safaris.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Game Drives

Many consider Queen Elizabeth National Park to be the best destination for Game drives in Uganda. It is in western Uganda in the Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri districts. It takes approximately 400kms from Kampala, and it’s the second-largest national park in Uganda. It’s the most beautiful protected area with 95 mammal species, including the tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector.

The park also boasts 10 primate species and over 600 bird species, among others. Game driving is one of the common activities in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Visitors get an opportunity to view wildlife in its natural environment. The park has the morning game drive, which is the best game drive, and the late evening game drive. There are different tracks in the park, for example, the Kasenyi track in the northeastern sector and the Kaguta track. You’ll expect to see 4 of the big five, and these include lions, elephants, buffalo, and leopards. This ensures an ultimate safari experience.

Lake Mburo National Park Game Drives

Lake Mburo National Park is one of the best destinations to do Game drives in Uganda. It is in the Mbarara and Kiruhura districts of western Uganda. The park offers morning and late evening game drives, which last for 3 to 4 hours. Game drives in Lake Mburo National Park are better in the dry season when the animals assemble around the water bodies, like the lakes and swamps. The visitors follow different tracks in the park during the game drive. These include the zebra track, which connects to the Ruroko track junction. It then traverses through the wetland and thick acacia woodlands. It allows you to view the olive trees, euphorbia tree species, and animals like the Burchell’s zebra along the roadsides. You also see other animals like elands, giraffes, bushbucks, Oribi, reedbucks, impala, buffaloes, and hippos, among others.

The Kazuma track passes through the grasslands dotted with wood species and explores the five lakes in Lake Mburo on top of Kazuma Hill, during the game drives on this track you will see the water environment, swamps that surround Lake Mburo with water birds like the black-billed bustard, crowned cranes, crested francolin, southern red bishop, pelicans, herons among others for the bird lovers to explore. Lake Mburo National Park is one of the three national parks in Uganda that harbor the Burchell’s zebra. The park offers other activities apart from game drives, including bird watching for bird lovers. There’s also a boat cruise, cultural encounters, nature walks, sport fishing, guided biking, and horse riding. Hence, it’s the only park in Uganda that offers an opportunity for visitors to explore the park on horseback.

Kidepo Valley National Park Game Drives

Kidepo Valley National Park is a remote national park in the Kaabong district in northeastern Uganda. It takes approximately 12 hours by road from Kampala, and you can also access it by air. The park is a great destination for game viewing because it’s home to 80 mammal species. 28 of these are endemic to only the Karamoja region. Kidepo National Park has the morning game drive, which starts at around 6 am, and the evening game drive, which starts at 4 pm. Game drives around the park are interesting when you go with the guide. You will see the grasslands and open savannah vegetation.

This is very interesting to look at in the park. You therefore spot wildlife species like Uganda kobs, elephants, duikers, reedbucks, waterbucks, antelopes, elands, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, Oribi, cheetahs, leopards, and Oryx. Additionally, you spot some bird species like the ostriches and the yellow-billed hornbill, among others.  You can visit Kidepo National Park any time throughout the year. However, the dry season between December -February and June to September is the best time to visit the park. This is because there are fewer crowds and short grass for great wildlife viewing opportunities. The park also offers other activities, including bird watching, nature walks, and visiting the Karamoja/Ik village, among others. These give you interesting, exciting, and unforgettable moments on your safari in Uganda.

Murchison Falls National Park Game Drives

Murchison Falls National Park is in the northwestern part of Uganda. It is the largest national park, requiring a 5-6-hour drive from Kampala. The park is home to various wildlife species, including 76 mammal species and 450 bird species, among others. You can view some of these during the game drive in the park. In Murchison Falls, an early morning game drive starts at 7 am. Meanwhile, the afternoon game drive starts at 4 pm. However, the morning game drive is the best for a great experience.

You follow different tracks in the national park, which will lead you to a wide number of wildlife species. This includes following the Buligi track, which is a 7km track north of Paraa. It’s the most common due to the many wildlife species on it. It takes you to the Albert Victoria and the Queens tracks on the northern bank of the River Nile.

Other Traditional safari activities to combine with the Uganda Gorilla Safari

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is one of the most exciting wildlife experiences you can have, second only to gorilla trekking. The best place to enjoy this remarkable adventure is Kibale Forest National Park, often referred to as the primate capital of the world. This vast tropical rainforest is home to the highest density of chimpanzees in Uganda, alongside several other primate species such as red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

The trek begins with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who share insights about the forest, the behavior of chimpanzees, and the rules you must follow during your encounter. Accompanied by skilled guides, you then set off into the lush greenery of Kibale, following trails that wind through towering trees, dense undergrowth, and the rich sounds of the forest. As you walk, you may hear the loud pant-hoots and calls of chimpanzees echoing through the canopy, guiding you closer to their location.

When you finally encounter a troop, the experience is unforgettable. Watching chimpanzees swing through the trees, groom one another, feed, or even rest offers a fascinating glimpse into their social lives and striking similarities to humans. Visitors are allowed one hour in their presence, which is enough to observe and capture lasting memories through photography.

Kibale offers both standard chimpanzee trekking and a full-day habituation experience, where you spend extended time with a semi-habituated group, observing how they adapt to human presence. This makes it ideal for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of primate behavior.

    Cultural Experiences

Cultural experiences in Uganda offer travelers the chance to go beyond wildlife encounters and connect with the country’s rich heritage and diverse communities. With over 50 ethnic groups, each with unique languages, traditions, and practices, Uganda provides a vibrant cultural journey that adds depth to any safari adventure. Visitors can immerse themselves in traditional music, dance, storytelling, farming practices, and craft-making, gaining a true sense of the daily lives of local people.

One of the most remarkable experiences is visiting the Batwa community, the former forest dwellers of Bwindi and Mgahinga. Guided by the Batwa themselves, you can learn about their ancient way of life, including hunting techniques, herbal medicine, and fire-making skills, as well as enjoy traditional songs and dances. This encounter not only preserves their culture but also helps support their livelihoods after displacement from the forests. Similarly, other communities such as the Banyankole, Baganda, and Batooro invite travelers to experience their cattle-keeping traditions, cultural ceremonies, and local cuisines.

Participating in these activities promotes sustainable tourism, ensuring that local communities benefit directly from visitors. By purchasing crafts, joining community tours, or engaging in cultural performances, travelers help conserve Uganda’s traditions while enriching their safari with authentic human connections.

    Serenity and Relaxation

Lake Bunyonyi, often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa, is the perfect destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure after a gorilla trekking experience. Nestled in southwestern Uganda and surrounded by rolling green hills, the lake is dotted with over 20 small islands, each with its own charm and history. Its tranquil waters provide a serene setting where visitors can unwind, reflect, and take in the breathtaking scenery.

The lake is also an excellent spot for gentle exploration and recreation. Canoeing on traditional dugout canoes offers a unique way to discover the islands, while boat cruises allow you to enjoy the sweeping views and learn about the legends tied to the lake. Birdwatching is another highlight, as Lake Bunyonyi is home to hundreds of bird species, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

Unlike many African lakes, Bunyonyi is bilharzia-free and safe for swimming, which adds to its appeal as a retreat. Whether you want to relax on the lakeshore, watch the sunset over the hills, or explore the surrounding villages to meet local communities, Lake Bunyonyi provides a blend of peace, culture, and natural beauty. It is an ideal way to complement the thrill of a Ugandan safari.

International Combinations of Uganda Gorilla and Traditional Safari

    Serengeti National Park (Tanzania)

Combining Uganda’s primate adventures with the vast savannahs of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania or Kenya creates one of the most rewarding safari experiences in East Africa. Uganda enchants travelers with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and chimpanzee encounters in Kibale National Park, immersing visitors in lush tropical landscapes where intimate primate viewing offers unforgettable moments. In contrast, the Serengeti showcases endless golden plains alive with some of the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife, delivering the quintessential African safari atmosphere.

The Serengeti is most famous for the Great Migration, an annual spectacle where over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the savannah in search of fresh pastures. This dramatic journey, often described as one of nature’s greatest shows, is accompanied by predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas, making game drives thrilling and unpredictable. Beyond the migration, the park is home to the Big Five—elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, lions, and leopards—as well as an extraordinary variety of other species and birdlife.

Travelers can practically combine Uganda and Serengeti safaris through regional flights connecting Entebbe International Airport in Uganda with Kilimanjaro or Arusha in Tanzania, or Nairobi in Kenya. This makes it easy to transition from Uganda’s misty rainforests to the open savannahs of the Serengeti. Many itineraries start with the challenging yet rewarding gorilla trek in Uganda before moving to the Serengeti for classic game drives, ensuring both intimacy with primates and dramatic wildlife spectacles.

The combination provides a diverse safari experience that balances the tranquility and mystery of forest exploration with the awe-inspiring scale of East Africa’s savannah ecosystems. Together, Uganda and the Serengeti deliver the best of both worlds, making for a truly complete and unforgettable safari adventure.

    Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya)

Combining Uganda’s gorillas with a traditional safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve offers an extraordinary contrast in safari adventures. While Uganda’s forests, such as Bwindi Impenetrable and Kibale, immerse travelers in lush greenery and intimate encounters with gorillas and chimpanzees, the Masai Mara presents open golden plains teeming with a wide array of large mammals. Here, visitors can witness lions lounging under acacia trees, cheetahs sprinting across the grasslands, elephants roaming in herds, and giraffes gracefully moving between the scattered bushes.

The Masai Mara is also famous for its seasonal wildlife spectacle, as millions of wildebeest and zebras migrate from the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing lands, creating dramatic river crossings and predator-prey interactions that captivate nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Guided game drives allow travelers to explore the park safely while maximizing sightings of the Big Five and other iconic African species, providing a classic safari experience that is both thrilling and educational.

Travelers often combine Uganda’s primate-focused treks with the Masai Mara’s expansive savannah wildlife tours to experience the full spectrum of East Africa’s biodiversity. The journey from Uganda’s misty forests to Kenya’s open plains highlights the continent’s remarkable ecological diversity, offering unforgettable encounters with both endangered primates and iconic savannah wildlife. Together, these destinations create a well-rounded, immersive safari adventure that caters to nature lovers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts seeking varied and enriching experiences.

What is the Best Time For Combining Uganda Gorillas and a Traditional Safari?

The best time to combine a Uganda gorilla trek with a Big Five safari depends largely on weather patterns, wildlife activity, and your preferred travel experience. Uganda’s gorilla trekking is possible year-round, with the dry seasons from June to September and December to February being the most popular. During these months, trails in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks are less muddy, making trekking easier and increasing your chances of a comfortable encounter with the mountain gorillas. The dry conditions also allow for better visibility and photography, ensuring a more enjoyable safari experience.

For Big Five safaris, whether in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, or Kidepo Valley National Parks, the dry seasons similarly offer excellent wildlife viewing. Animals tend to gather around water sources, making sightings of lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos more predictable. Roads are more accessible for game drives, and the chance of heavy rainfall disrupting your itinerary is minimal.

Combining gorilla trekking with a Big Five safari during these dry months ensures a seamless, diverse East African adventure. You can immerse yourself in Uganda’s lush rainforests, tracking endangered gorillas, then journey to open savannahs to witness Africa’s iconic wildlife in their natural habitats. By planning your trip between June and September or December and February, you maximize your chances of both successful gorilla encounters and abundant wildlife sightings, creating a truly unforgettable safari experience that captures the best of Uganda’s biodiversity.
