3 Day Congo Lowland Gorilla Tour

The 3-Day Congo Lowland Gorilla Tour offers a truly rare wildlife experience — a chance to come face to face with the Grauer’s gorilla, a subspecies of the Eastern gorilla that lives deep in the lowland rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This remarkable creature is the largest of the four gorilla species in the world and exists only in the tropical rainforests of eastern Congo, making it one of the most exclusive wildlife encounters available anywhere on the continent.
Grauer’s gorillas stand apart from other gorilla species in several distinctive ways. They have stocky, powerful bodies, unusually large hands, and short muzzles that give them a bold, commanding appearance. Their diet consists mainly of fruits and plants, which keeps them moving through the forest in search of food. Sadly, their population has dropped significantly over the years. Habitat destruction and poaching — driven largely by the ongoing civil unrest in this volatile region — have pushed these incredible animals toward the brink. Every visit to see them contributes directly to their conservation and supports the local communities working to protect them.
This three-day tour begins and ends in Kigali, Rwanda. However, if you are already based in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, your operator can also arrange the tour from there.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Travel from Kigali to Bukavu
Your adventure begins early in the morning when your driver picks you up in Kigali and heads southwest toward the Rwandan border near Kamembe. However, the drive takes approximately four to five hours through Rwanda’s scenic hillside terrain, passing tea plantations and rural villages along the way.
At the Kamembe border crossing, your dedicated Congo guide meets you and takes over the transfer, leading you across into the Democratic Republic of Congo and onward to the city of Bukavu. Bukavu sits on the southern shores of Lake Kivu and serves as your base for the gorilla trek the following morning.
After arriving in Bukavu, you check in and settle at the Panorama Hotel, a comfortable property that gives you views over the surrounding landscape. The evening is yours to rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare your gear for the trek ahead. A good night’s sleep is important — Day 2 is the highlight of the entire tour.
Day 2 — Lowland Gorilla Trekking and Lwiro Sanctuary Visit
Your day starts early with breakfast before your guide drives you to Kahuzi-Biega National Park headquarters. Besides, Rangers conduct a briefing covering trail expectations, gorilla rules, and safety guidelines.
After the briefing, you head into the forest with your ranger guides. Trackers use the gorillas’ last known location to find the most direct route. The terrain is dense and physically demanding, so bring good boots and enough water.
Finding the gorilla family makes every step worthwhile. More so, you spend one full hour watching them feed, play, and interact just meters away. However, their size and calm intelligence create a truly unforgettable moment. Remember to keep your camera flash off throughout.
In the afternoon, you visit the nearby Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center. However, this facility cares for orphaned chimpanzees and rescued monkey species seized from poachers. Besides, Staff walk you through their daily conservation work and explain how they prepare some animals for release back into the wild. It is an inspiring visit that deepens everything you experienced in the forest earlier.
You return to Panorama Hotel for dinner and your final night in Bukavu.
Day 3 — Return Transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, your Congo guide drives you back to the Kamembe border crossing. On the other hand, your Rwandan driver meets you on the other side and takes you on the return journey to Kigali. You arrive in the afternoon in time for a drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
The tour ends here. However, the memories you carry home — of standing face to face with the world’s largest gorilla deep in the Congo rainforest — will stay with you for a lifetime. On the other hand, it is truly one of Central Africa’s rarest and most rewarding wildlife experiences.
