20 things to know about mountain gorilla trekking

This 2014 photo provided by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund shows a group of mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, the International Union for Conservation of Nature updated the species’ status from “critically endangered” to “endangered.” The designation is more promising, but still precarious. 20 Things to Know About Mountain Gorilla Trekking: Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet. However, it takes real preparation to do it well. Before you lace up your boots and head into the forest, there are some important things you need to know. At Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we want every traveler to feel confident, informed, and ready for the adventure ahead. Here are 20 essential things to know before you go.

    1. What Is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking takes you deep into dense rainforests on a guided hike to spend time with a wild gorilla troop. You watch youngsters tumble and play, mothers cradle their infants, and powerful silverbacks hold their ground with quiet authority. It is a deeply moving experience that changes how you see the natural world.

    2. Where Should You Go?

Mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Massif, a volcanic mountain range spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we lead treks in both Uganda and Rwanda, where conditions are safe, well-organized, and consistently rewarding.

    3. Which Park Is Best in Uganda?

Uganda offers two options: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is the clear frontrunner. It holds one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa and is home to around 459 mountain gorillas. Mgahinga has roughly 80. Most of our guests choose Bwindi, and they are never disappointed.

    4. What About Rwanda?

In Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the only destination for mountain gorilla trekking. It shares the same gorilla population as Mgahinga across the border, since the animals move freely between the two parks. The park is stunning, and the trekking experience there is world-class.

    5. Where Do Gorillas Live?

Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude forests between 2,500 and 4,000 meters above sea level. They are herbivores, feeding on roots, shoots, wild celery, and fruit. The cool, moist mountain climate suits them perfectly, and the forests are rich with everything they need to thrive.

    6. When Is the Best Time to Visit?

You can trek year-round, but the best times are June to September and December to February. These periods bring the least rainfall and the most comfortable trekking conditions. Keep in mind that these are also the busiest times, so permits sell out quickly. Our team at Safari Vacations and Travel Services will help you secure everything well in advance.

    7. How Do You Get a Permit?

You can book permits online, but we strongly recommend going through a trusted safari operator like us. The roads to Bwindi are remote and can be challenging to navigate without local knowledge. When you travel with us, we handle your permits, transport, and accommodation from start to finish.

    8. How Much Does a Permit Cost?

A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $800 per person. In Rwanda, it costs $1,500. These fees fund gorilla conservation efforts and limit visitor numbers to protect the animals. A portion also supports the development of local communities surrounding the parks.

    9. Will You Definitely See Gorillas?

Nothing in the wild comes with a 100% guarantee, but the parks send trackers out each morning to locate the troops before trekkers set off. Your guide stays in radio contact with these trackers throughout the hike. In practice, virtually every group finds its gorillas. You will almost certainly see several, including playful infants.

    10. How Large Are the Trekking Groups?

Each gorilla troop receives a maximum of eight visitors per day, not including guides and porters. Every group is assigned one specific troop. Once you reach the gorillas, you have exactly one hour with them. This limit protects the animals and keeps the experience intimate and special.

    11. How Long Does the Trek Take?

Treks range from about 30 minutes to four hours or more, depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. You can choose a short, medium, or long route. We recommend the longer route for anyone in good physical shape. Hiking through the ancient rainforest is an adventure in itself, and the anticipation builds beautifully before you finally meet the gorillas.

    12. What Happens When You Find Them?

Once you locate the troop, your hour begins. Sit down, stay calm, and absorb the moment. You may photograph and film the gorillas freely, but switch off your flash. Move slowly, keep quiet, and avoid sudden gestures. Your guide will direct you throughout the visit.

    13. Is It Safe?

Habituated mountain gorillas are safe to be around. The habituation process takes nearly two years and results in gorillas that are calm and comfortable around people. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times, maintain a distance of at least three meters, and never stare directly into a gorilla’s eyes. If a silverback approaches, stay still and crouch low. Do not run.

    14. Is Uganda or Rwanda Safe to Visit?

20 Things to Know About Mountain Gorilla Trekking: Both countries are stable and welcoming to tourists. Traveling with a local operator like Safari Vacations and Travel Services adds an extra layer of safety and confidence. Our guides know these regions inside out and take excellent care of every guest.

    15. Can You Take Photos?

Absolutely. Photography is encouraged, as long as you maintain the three-meter distance rule and keep your flash off. Bring a waterproof bag for your camera, because rain can arrive at any time in the forest.

    16. What Is the Weather Like?

Expect mild, wet conditions. Daytime temperatures hover around 23°C, while nights drop to about 11°C. Rain is possible at any time of year, so always come prepared with waterproof clothing and good boots.

    17. What Should You Pack?

Bring a camera with a waterproof bag, DEET-based insect repellent, garden gloves for grabbing onto vegetation, a sturdy walking stick, a daypack with water and snacks, and gaiters if you own them. Pack light but smart, so you can focus entirely on the experience.

    18. What Should You Wear?

Choose lightweight, long-sleeved tops and long trousers in neutral colors like green, tan, grey, or brown. Avoid navy or black, as dark colors attract tsetse flies. Wear thick socks, a rain jacket, and properly broken-in hiking boots. Comfortable feet make for a happy trek.

    19. Do You Need to Be Fit?

You need a reasonable level of fitness. The terrain is steep, muddy, and uneven in places. However, you can request an easier route if needed. Note that anyone feeling unwell on the day of the trek must stay behind, as gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses.

    20. How Do You Choose the Right Operator?

20 Things to Know About Mountain Gorilla Trekking: Choose an operator that employs local guides, handles all logistics smoothly, and genuinely cares about your experience. At Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we do all of this and more. We set up pre-trip WhatsApp groups so you can connect with your fellow travelers before you even arrive. We are with you every step of the way, from your first inquiry to the moment you see your first silverback.
