What To Pack For Gorilla Trekking During the Rainy Season

What To Pack For Gorilla Trekking During the Rainy Season. When preparing for a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda during the rainy season, certain essentials will ensure your comfort. Rainproof gear, such as a poncho, raincoat, and waterproof boot,s is a must. Additionally, your packing list should include warm clothing, sunscreen, a camera, and a safari hat. You also need a long-sleeved shirt and other necessary items.

In Uganda, gorilla trekking safaris take place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. Both parks are in the southern region of the country. Currently, there are approximately 21 gorilla trekking families open for visitors. Bwindi Forest also offers an alternative experience, popular as the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Here, a maximum of four tourists join researchers to spend four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family.

For standard gorilla trekking in Uganda, visitors can observe a fully habituated mountain gorilla family for one hour.

Where to Go for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda occurs in two national parks in the southwestern part of the country. These are; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park.

    Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is home to the largest number of gorilla trekking families in Uganda, with approximately 19 habituated families. Some of these include Mubare, Rushegura, Nkuringo, Bitukura, Nshongi, Kahungye, Busingye, Tindatine, and others.

The park covers 327 square kilometers and features diverse landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. To ensure better management and visitor experience, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four trekking sectors. These include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.

When booking a gorilla trekking permit, it is allocated based on these trekking sectors. It is also recommended to choose accommodation within the sector where your permit is assigned. This allows for easier access to the briefing point on the trekking day.

    Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga National Park is home to one habituated gorilla family, famous as Nyakagezi. Despite being the smallest national park in Uganda, covering 33.7 square kilometers, it is a significant habitat for large primates.

In addition to mountain gorillas, Mgahinga is a haven for golden monkeys and other primate species. These include Blue monkeys, Grey-cheeked mangabeys, Vervet monkeys, and Olive baboons.

The park is also a great destination for birdwatching, with over 115 recorded bird species, and the list continues to grow as discoveries are made. Many of these birds are Albertine Rift endemics, making Mgahinga a prime location for bird enthusiasts.

What Travelers Must Have For The Gorilla Trekking Experience During The Rainy Season in Uganda

    Gorilla permit

What To Pack For Gorilla Trekking During the Rainy Season. A gorilla trekking permit is the key requirement for confirming a gorilla safari in Uganda. These permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, with a strict limit of eight permits per gorilla family per day to support conservation efforts. Despite the high demand, the number of permits remains fixed to protect the endangered mountain gorillas.

To secure a gorilla trekking permit, travelers must first choose their preferred trekking date and confirm the people they will be traveling with, ensuring that everyone meets the minimum age requirement of 12 years. Once the date and group are set, checking permit availability and booking as early as possible is crucial since their status can change at any time without notice.

Although the rainy season is considered a low tourism period, which may increase the chances of last-minute availability, this is not always guaranteed. On the day of the trekking adventure, tourists must present their gorilla permit along with other necessary identification documents at the briefing point for verification before embarking on their trek.

    Safari Rainproof Boots

The dense jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park have rough terrain. They’re also often muddy due to frequent rains and occasional river floods. Navigating these forests on barefoot or in simple flip-flops can be extremely difficult. To ensure comfort and protection, safari rainproof boots are essential for trekking.

These boots not only keep your feet dry but also shield you from sharp surfaces along the trails. This prevents you from sustaining injuries while exploring the wilderness. Proper footwear enhances the trekking experience by providing stability and protection in the rugged forest environment.

    Raincoat or Poncho

Both Bwindi and Mgahinga forests experience unexpected rains, so it’s essential to be prepared. To avoid getting soaked and cold during your trek, pack rainproof gear such as a raincoat or poncho. These will keep you dry and comfortable as you explore the forests. This thus ensures that the weather doesn’t dampen your gorilla trekking experience.

    Long-Sleeved Shirt and Trousers

While trekking through the forest in search of mountain gorillas, you’ll encounter stinging nettles and insects that may cause discomfort. To protect yourself, wear a long-sleeved shirt and trousers. Opt for wilderness-friendly colors like tan or khaki, which blend well with the environment. Avoid wearing camouflage attire, as it is considered military design in Uganda and may not be permitted.

    Safari Hat

A safari hat is essential for protecting your head and hair from the water that drips off the large trees or from the rain that can persist throughout the day.

    Sunscreen

Uganda’s tropical climate means that even during the rainy season, the sun can shine brightly, and ultraviolet rays can still penetrate, causing sunburn. It’s important to pack sunscreen to protect your skin.

    Insect Repellent

Make sure to pack insect repellent that is gentle on your skin for your gorilla trekking safari in Uganda. The forests are home to biting insects like mosquitoes, which can transmit malaria, as well as tsetse flies, wild bees, and others.

Apply for the Relevant Uganda Visa

If you’re a tourist planning to visit Uganda, you’ll need a visa to enter the country. While you can obtain one upon arrival, it’s advisable to apply for it in advance to save time. Immigration queues can be long, and after a long flight, the wait can feel even more exhausting.

    Valid Passport

When planning to go gorilla trekking in Uganda, ensure you have a valid passport. It serves as an essential identification document at the ranger station and is required to verify the details you provided when collecting your gorilla trekking permit.

    Camera

To capture the unforgettable moments of your mountain gorilla encounter, bring a camera with a soundproof feature. Don’t forget extra fully charged batteries and memory cards, as you may need them.

    Garden Gloves

While exploring the forest in search of mountain gorillas, you’ll likely come across rough surfaces that could cause discomfort. Garden gloves will help protect your hands.

    Sunglasses

The forest is home to flying insects and water dripping from the trees, which may irritate your eyes. Wearing sunglasses will prevent this from happening.

    First Aid Kit

Pack a first aid kit with prescribed emergency medications, as you may need them in case of an emergency during your trek.

    Waterproof Backpack

Bring a waterproof backpack to carry your essentials during the trek. It’s easier and safer for your items, especially when handing them to a porter.

    Drinking Water Bottle

A foldable water bottle will keep you hydrated during the gorilla search. Be sure to fill it before leaving the lodge, and avoid drinking fluids that may impair your judgment in the wilderness.

    Hard Cash

Pack some hard cash as credit cards are not widely accepted in Africa, and obtaining cash through ATMs can be challenging and time-consuming.

    Extra Clothes

After the gorilla trek, you’ll likely be muddy and dirty, so having a set of extra clothes will help you feel fresh and comfortable.

    Charger

Bring your charger for your electronics, as the lodge may not have enough outlets to accommodate everyone.

    A Pair of Binoculars

Some sights in the jungle may be far away, but still worth seeing. A pair of binoculars will help you get a closer view of distant wildlife or features.

    Duffle Bag

Since you may not have assistance with your luggage, a duffle bag is convenient for carrying your belongings, especially when you need to lift them on your own.

    A Pair of Stockings

Stockings are useful for tucking in your trousers or wearing during extremely cold conditions at the lodge, as temperatures in the Virunga region can sometimes dip below freezing.

Book Accommodation for Your Gorilla Safari in Uganda

It’s important to reserve your accommodation in advance for your Uganda gorilla trekking safari. For a smoother experience, it’s recommended to book your accommodation within or close to the area of Bwindi where your gorilla permit is booked. This will help you avoid the hassle of driving in the dark to reach a different area for your trekking briefing, where obstacles or delays could occur.

    A Working Torch

Many lodges around Bwindi and Mgahinga forest rely on solar energy for lighting, heating water, and charging devices, but sometimes the batteries don’t store enough energy. In case of a power outage, having a working torch will provide you with reliable lighting.

    Toiletries

If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to bring your toiletries, even though some lodges do provide them.

Best Time to Book a Gorilla Trekking Permit for the Rainy Season in Uganda

Booking your gorilla trekking permit well in advance is crucial, regardless of the season. For the rainy season, it’s recommended to secure your permit at least three months ahead. While the rainy season is considered the low season in Uganda, with fewer tourists, it’s still safer and more reliable to book your permit in advance.

When reserving your gorilla permit, you can choose your preferred trekking date or partially select it, then check for permit availability. It’s advisable to book as soon as possible, as the status of permits can change without notice.

Ensure you provide the necessary personal details, including your full name (as per your passport), nationality, and date of birth, for identification purposes. These details will be added to your gorilla permit card. Please note that no gorilla permit in Uganda is issued or reserved without full payment.

Remember, Uganda’s gorilla trekking permits are only valid for the specific date they are booked. If you fail to show up for your trek without notifying the Uganda Wildlife Authority in advance, you will not be refunded under their refund policy.

While last-minute availability may occur during the low season, permits are allocated by specific areas, particularly in Bwindi. This could complicate accommodation arrangements, so booking early helps avoid any confusion.

Dos and Don’ts of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

    • Keep a safe distance: Always maintain at least 8 meters from the mountain gorillas to reduce the risk of transmitting infections.
    • Avoid spitting on vegetation: Spitting on plants can pass germs to the gorillas, who rely on foliage for their food.
    • No littering: Dispose of trash properly. Littering can harm the environment and reduce the food sources for mountain gorillas.
    • Don’t provoke or mimic gorillas: Any form of agitation can cause gorillas to feel threatened and hide. Let them feel comfortable in your presence.
    • Limited time with gorillas: You are allowed to spend only one hour with the gorillas during the trek, a conservation measure to protect them from tourism pressure.
    • Keep quiet: Maintain a quiet voice or remain silent during the trek to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
    • Age restrictions: Only children aged 12 and above are allowed to participate in gorilla trekking, as the terrain can be challenging for younger children.
    • Wear a mask and sanitize: Ensure you wear a mask and use hand sanitizer before entering the forest to safeguard both your health and that of the gorillas.
    • No flash photography: Flash photography can startle the gorillas and cause them to retreat. Use natural lighting for photos.
    • Eat or smoke away from gorillas: If you need to eat or smoke, make sure to do so at least 200 meters away from the gorillas.
