Nkuringo Gorilla Permits and Families, In 2004, the Nkuringo sector opened for gorilla tracking. It is situated at a high altitude of about 6800 feet on the park’s western border, north of Kisoro town.

Nkuringo in Bwindi Impenetrable NP is 480km which is about 10 hours driving from Kampala/Entebbe via Mbarara-Kabale road.

Meanwhile, most tourists who travel to Uganda the pearl of Africa for Gorilla habituation and Gorilla tracking prefer flying into Kigali-Rwanda, which is around 5 hours driving through Cyanika borderline.

The Nkuringo Gorilla Family

In 2004, the Nkuringo gorilla family was successfully habituated. The group was named after their founding leader, a silverback named Nkuringo, which means ‘a Round Hill’. Four years later, Nkuringo passed away. Unfortunately, Nkuringo passed away four years later. He left behind two sons, Rafiki, meaning ‘friend’ in Swahili, and Safari.

Safari book up the leadership of the family and has been able to strongly hold all the members together through good times and bad seasons.

Seven months into the safari era, this family joyfully welcomed healthy baby twins, named Katungi and Muhoozi. Unfortunately, Katungi passed away before reaching his second birthday. Currently, the family comprises nine members, led by a dominant black-back male.

Bushaho Gorilla Family

The Bushaho Gorilla Family is another Gorilla group for Gorilla tracking in the Nkuringo sector. This family has 11 family members and this has increased Nkuringo Gorilla tracking permits. Before the coming of the Christmas Gorilla family, there were 16 permits but after the introduction of the family, now 24 Gorilla permits are available daily.

Nkuringo Gorilla family stays in one of the most challenging Gorilla tracking sectors in the whole of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park but when you finally come to the pathway, it is the most rewarding experience of all time.

These permits are purchased at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices and booked on a first-come, first-serve basis. Christmas Gorilla family

The Christmas Gorilla family in Nkuringo has 7 members headed by one silverback called Christmas one blackback, 4 females, and one baby. The introduction of this group has led to an increase in the number of Gorilla permits available for Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
