Quick Answer

Why Are Masks Worn Around Mountain Gorillas?

People wear masks during gorilla trekking mainly to reduce the possibility of transmitting respiratory infections from humans to mountain gorillas. Gorillas are great apes and share important biological similarities with humans, which means some human illnesses can potentially affect them. A properly worn mask adds a protective barrier when visitors are close enough to observe a gorilla family.

Masks work together with other conservation measures such as maintaining the recommended distance, limiting visitor numbers, restricting observation time, avoiding trekking when seriously ill and following instructions given by park rangers. The purpose is therefore gorilla protection and responsible tourism rather than protection from aggressive gorillas.

Seeing wild mountain gorillas during gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. Yet it is also unusually intimate. Unlike observing elephants or lions from a safari vehicle, gorilla trekking brings a small group of people into the forest habitat of one of humanity’s closest wild relatives.

Frequently asked questions

Protecting Wild Gorillas

The Main Reason: Reducing Disease Transmission

The mask you may wear during your gorilla encounter is primarily there for the gorillas. Humans travel from different countries, pass through airports, board long-haul flights, stay in hotels and interact with many people before eventually reaching the forest. A visitor may therefore carry a respiratory infection even when symptoms appear relatively mild.

Mountain gorillas live close together in social family groups. If an infection reaches one individual, there is concern that illness can spread among members of the group. Preventing unnecessary exposure is therefore an important part of responsible
mountain gorilla trekking.

A mask covering the nose and mouth helps reduce respiratory droplets released while visitors breathe, speak, cough or sneeze. It is not a complete solution by itself, which is why it works together with distance, hygiene, controlled visitor numbers and limits on observation time.

Can Mountain Gorillas Catch Human Diseases?

Yes. Their close biological relationship with humans is one reason conservationists pay particular attention to disease prevention during gorilla tourism.

🦍

Close Biological Relationship

Gorillas are great apes with physiological similarities to humans. Certain pathogens that affect people may therefore also pose a health risk to gorillas.

😷

Respiratory Illness Matters

Respiratory illnesses are important because visitors breathe, speak and occasionally cough or sneeze while observing gorillas at comparatively close range.

🌿

A Restricted Wild Population

Mountain gorillas occur within a limited natural range. Protecting individual families from avoidable health risks therefore contributes to wider conservation efforts.

Important:
Wearing a mask does not mean gorilla trekking is unsafe. It reflects the unusually high conservation standards needed when visitors encounter endangered great apes in their natural habitat.

How Does Wearing a Mask Protect Gorillas?

A face mask acts as an additional barrier between the visitor’s respiratory system and the surrounding environment. During the actual gorilla encounter, trekkers may remain quietly observing the animals as they feed, rest, groom one another or move through vegetation.

The mask helps reduce respiratory particles released from the nose and mouth. This is particularly relevant because wildlife encounters cannot be choreographed exactly. Rangers can position visitors carefully, but a gorilla may independently move through vegetation and temporarily reduce the distance between itself and the trekking group.

For this reason, conservation practice uses several layers of protection rather than relying on a single measure. The aim is to reduce risk while still allowing carefully controlled tourism to contribute to gorilla conservation.

When Do You Put On the Mask During Gorilla Trekking?

Your gorilla trekking day normally begins with a briefing from park staff. Rangers explain forest safety, gorilla behaviour, photography etiquette, health precautions and the rules that apply during the encounter. Your ranger will tell you when your mask needs to be worn according to the procedures in force at that destination.

In practical terms, health precautions become especially important as your tracking team approaches the gorilla family and throughout the observation period. You should not assume that regulations you read online months before travelling will automatically be identical on your trekking date.

Conservation procedures can be updated, so instructions issued by the responsible wildlife authority and your ranger on the trekking day should always take priority.

Follow Your Ranger

You do not need to memorise every procedure beforehand. Listen carefully during the briefing and follow the ranger throughout the experience.

Mask Guidance for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

The conservation principle is similar in both destinations: minimise the possibility of transmitting illness to gorillas and follow the health instructions communicated by park authorities.

Destination Gorilla Area What Travellers Should Do Planning Advice
Uganda Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Carry a suitable mask and follow Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger instructions regarding when it should be worn. Attend the full pre-trek briefing and disclose significant illness before trekking.
Uganda Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Follow the same conservation-first approach and current ranger instructions. Keep your mask clean and easily accessible rather than buried in your backpack.
Rwanda Volcanoes National Park Follow the health and visitation procedures provided at the morning briefing. Carry a clean mask even if your tour documents do not specifically mention one.

For a broader destination comparison, read our Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking comparison or our complete Uganda and Rwanda gorilla trekking guide.

What Type of Mask Should You Bring?

Carry at least two clean, well-fitting masks in your daypack. A good-quality disposable medical-style mask or an appropriate respirator-style mask is preferable to a very loose decorative face covering because the purpose is to create a useful barrier around the nose and mouth.

The exact mask specified or provided can depend on current park procedures. If park staff supply a particular mask, use it as instructed.

✓ Carry a Spare
Rain and perspiration can make a mask damp, so keep a clean replacement in a waterproof pouch.
✓ Keep It Clean
Avoid repeatedly touching the front of your mask when you are close to the gorillas.
✓ Cover Nose & Mouth
Wear the mask properly rather than leaving it underneath your nose.
✓ Follow Instructions
Use any mask supplied by park staff according to their current procedures.

What If You Have a Cold, Flu or Cough Before Your Gorilla Trek?

This is where responsible gorilla tourism becomes particularly important. A traveller who develops meaningful symptoms before trekking should not hide them simply because a permit and long-distance holiday have already been paid for.

Tell your safari guide and the responsible park staff about your condition. Rangers prioritise gorilla welfare and will advise you according to the procedures that apply at the time. Because disease transmission is one of the recognised concerns associated with close human contact, honesty about illness is part of being a responsible visitor.

A mask should never be treated as permission to ignore illness.
Masks are an additional protective measure; they do not replace health screening, distancing, hygiene or decisions made by park officials.

Travellers should also consider comprehensive travel insurance when planning a high-value wildlife holiday. Gorilla permits are tightly controlled, and cancellation or rescheduling conditions can depend on the responsible wildlife authority, timing and circumstances.

Why Isn’t Keeping Your Distance Enough?

Distance remains one of the most important parts of responsible gorilla trekking, but it cannot eliminate every risk by itself. Gorillas are wild animals that choose where they move.

A family may be feeding on the ground when visitors arrive, and an individual can later move toward the group or pass through nearby vegetation. Dense vegetation and steep terrain can also limit movement.

Rangers manage positioning carefully, but visitors cannot control a wild gorilla’s movements. This is why masks, distance, controlled observation time and illness precautions work together.

Visitors should maintain the distance instructed by their ranger and never deliberately move closer simply for a photograph.

What Should You Do If a Gorilla Comes Close to You?

A gorilla may occasionally choose to walk toward or past a group of trekkers. This can become one of the most memorable moments of the safari, but visitors should never use the opportunity to touch, follow or deliberately interact with the animal.

1

Remain Calm

Avoid sudden movements. Your ranger understands gorilla behaviour and will guide you.

2

Do Not Touch

Even when a gorilla reduces the distance itself, visitors should never reach toward it.

3

Follow the Ranger

Move, crouch or remain still according to instructions rather than making independent decisions.

4

Keep Your Mask On

Do not remove your mask simply to take a photograph when current park procedures require it.

Other Rules That Protect Mountain Gorillas

The mask is only one part of responsible gorilla trekking.

✓

Follow the Recommended Distance

Never intentionally move closer to a gorilla just to improve a photograph.

✓

Do Not Touch Gorillas

Gorillas remain wild animals even after habituation. Physical contact should be avoided.

✓

Keep Voices Low

A quiet group causes less disturbance and makes it easier to observe natural behaviour.

✓

Avoid Flash Photography

Prepare your camera before the encounter and make sure the flash is disabled.

✓

Do Not Eat Beside Gorillas

Food and snacks should remain packed away during the observation period.

✓

Carry Out Your Waste

Nothing should be left behind in gorilla habitat.

✓

Respect the Observation Limit

Standard gorilla trekking normally provides a regulated one-hour observation once the assigned family has been located.

✓

Declare Significant Illness

Tell your guide if you develop respiratory symptoms rather than attempting to hide them.

Are Gorilla Trekking Masks Just a COVID-19 Rule?

No. COVID-19 brought much greater public attention to masks and respiratory illness, but concern about disease transmission between humans and great apes existed before the pandemic.

Conservation guidance for great ape tourism has addressed respiratory disease prevention for many years. COVID-19 simply reinforced public understanding of how respiratory pathogens can move through populations.

For gorilla tourism, the wider principle remains the same: reduce unnecessary opportunities for infectious disease to move from human visitors to endangered wild apes.

Why Gorilla Health and Responsible Tourism Matter

Gorilla tourism presents an unusual conservation balance. Visitors want the privilege of observing mountain gorillas in the wild, while conservation managers need to ensure that tourism does not create unnecessary pressure on those same animals.

Well-managed tourism can contribute to park operations, conservation work, employment and economic opportunities around gorilla habitats. However, these benefits depend on visitors accepting rules that prioritise gorilla welfare.

Masks, controlled group sizes, ranger supervision and observation limits are therefore not simply inconveniences added to the experience. They form part of the management system that allows responsible gorilla tourism to continue.

This conservation-first approach applies whether you choose a normal trek or Uganda’s longer
Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Do the Same Health Principles Apply During Gorilla Habituation?

Yes. Gorilla habituation is also a controlled great-ape encounter, and visitors should observe the health and conservation instructions provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority team.

Responsible behaviour is especially important because visitors participating in habituation can spend considerably longer with the gorillas than visitors participating in a normal one-hour trekking encounter.

Uganda or Rwanda: Which Gorilla Trek Should You Choose?

The reason for wearing a mask is essentially the same whichever destination you choose: responsible management of close contact between people and wild great apes. The wider safari experience, however, differs.

Uganda is particularly attractive for travellers wanting to combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, Murchison Falls or a longer wildlife circuit. Rwanda is convenient for shorter itineraries because Volcanoes National Park can be reached relatively quickly from Kigali.

Your decision should therefore consider available time, budget, preferred accommodation, fitness, wider safari interests and permit availability.

Does Wearing a Mask Make Gorilla Trekking Difficult?

For most travellers, wearing a mask during the controlled gorilla observation period does not prevent them from enjoying the experience. The physically demanding part is normally the trek itself rather than the mask.

Gorilla trekking can involve steep hills, dense vegetation, slippery mud and an unpredictable amount of walking before the assigned family is located.

Older travellers and visitors with mobility concerns should discuss their needs before booking. Porters can provide valuable assistance with bags and difficult sections of trail.

Can You Start a Gorilla Trekking Safari From Kigali?

Yes. Kigali is an important gateway for both Rwanda gorilla safaris and some cross-border Uganda gorilla itineraries. Visitors can travel north toward Volcanoes National Park or cross into southwestern Uganda for Bwindi or Mgahinga, depending on the planned itinerary and border requirements.

This can be particularly useful for travellers with limited time who want to reach Uganda’s southwestern gorilla parks without making the longer overland journey from Entebbe.

Frequently Asked Questions About Why Do People Wear Masks In Trekking

Why do people wear masks during gorilla trekking?

Masks are primarily used to help reduce the possibility of humans transmitting respiratory infections to mountain gorillas. They are used together with distancing, controlled visitor numbers, ranger supervision and other conservation precautions.

Are masks meant to protect tourists from gorillas?

The principal conservation reason is to protect gorillas from respiratory particles released by human visitors. Normal wildlife safety procedures also apply.

Can gorillas catch respiratory infections from humans?

Great apes can be vulnerable to diseases associated with humans, including respiratory illnesses. This is why disease prevention is taken seriously around habituated gorillas.

Do I need to wear a mask for the entire hike?

Follow the current instructions given by your ranger and the responsible wildlife authority concerning when the mask must be worn.

What kind of mask should I bring?

Bring clean, well-fitting masks that properly cover your nose and mouth. Carrying a spare mask in a waterproof pouch is also sensible.

Can I go gorilla trekking if I have a cough or flu?

Do not hide significant symptoms. Tell your guide and park officials so they can advise you according to the current health procedures.

What happens if a gorilla approaches me?

Remain calm, avoid touching the animal, do not make sudden movements and follow your ranger’s directions.

Can I remove my mask for a photograph?

Not when doing so would conflict with the current park rules. Gorilla welfare should take priority over photographs.

Are masks only a COVID-19 rule?

No. Concern about human-to-great-ape disease transmission existed before COVID-19. The pandemic simply increased awareness of respiratory disease precautions.

Are gorilla trekking rules identical in Uganda and Rwanda?

Not necessarily. Different wildlife authorities manage the parks and procedures can change, so follow the official briefing on your trekking day.
