4-Day Akagera National Park Mid-Range Safari

Your 4-Day Akagera National Park and Volcanoes safari begins with a morning pick-up from the airportyour hotel, residence or agreed location in Kigali by your professional driver-guide. After a short introduction and safari briefing, depart Kigali and travel east toward Akagera National Park.

The drive provides your first opportunity to experience Rwanda beyond the capital, passing through rural communities, cultivated countryside and rolling landscapes before reaching the park. Upon arrival, proceed with the planned park formalities and continue to your accommodation or enjoy lunch according to the timing of your itinerary.

Later in the afternoon, prepare for one of the highlights of your first day: a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema. The boat excursion offers a completely different wildlife perspective from the game drives that follow the next day. As you cruise along the lake and its wetland environments, watch for hippos, crocodiles and an impressive variety of water-associated birds.

The late-afternoon timing also provides beautiful scenery as the light begins to soften over the lake. Keep your camera ready for wildlife, birdlife and landscape photography before returning to your lodge for dinner and your first overnight in Akagera National Park.

After an early breakfast, begin a game drive through Akagera National Park. This morning is dedicated to exploring Rwanda's premier savannah wildlife destination, characterized by open plains, woodland, lakes, wetlands and rolling landscapes.

Travel through different wildlife habitats with your driver-guide while searching for some of Akagera's best-known animals. The park supports the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, topi, waterbuck, hippos and numerous other species. Wildlife encounters vary because the animals move freely within the ecosystem, making each game drive different.

Your guide will help identify wildlife and explain aspects of animal behavior, habitat and conservation while stopping at appropriate points for photography. The combination of yesterday's Lake Ihema cruise and today's game drive provides both aquatic and terrestrial perspectives of Akagera.

After the wildlife experience, leave Akagera and begin the journey toward Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. This transfer takes you through changing landscapes as you travel from the warmer savannah environment of eastern Rwanda toward the greener and more mountainous Musanze region.

As you approach Volcanoes National Park, the scenery changes considerably, with cultivated hills and the dramatic Virunga volcanoes defining the landscape on clear days.

Arrive at your lodge, check in and spend the evening relaxing in preparation for the following morning's golden monkey trekking adventure.

After an early breakfast, transfer to Volcanoes National Park for registration and a briefing before beginning your golden monkey trekking experience. Accompanied by experienced park guides, enter the forest in search of these energetic and colorful primates. Once located, enjoy observing and photographing them as they feed, play and move through the vegetation.

After the trek, return for lunch and later visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village). Experience traditional Rwandan culture through music, dance, storytelling and demonstrations of local traditions. Afterwards, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge before checking out and beginning the scenic drive back to Kigali. Along the way, enjoy views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, farmland and local communities.

Upon arrival in Kigali, your driver-guide will transfer you to your hotel or Kigali International Airport, depending on your onward travel arrangements. This marks the end of your 4-day Rwanda safari combining Akagera’s wildlife, Lake Ihema, golden monkeys and Rwandan culture.
