Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Guide
Daily gorilla trekking Bwindi
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is organised throughout the year, including weekends and public holidays, subject to permit availability, park management conditions and any exceptional circumstances that may require an activity to be suspended.
Gorilla trekking takes place every day in Bwindi throughout the year.
There is no regular off-season. What changes during the year is the weather, trail conditions, permit demand and, in selected months, permit prices.

There is no regular gorilla trekking off-season in Bwindi. Travelers can therefore plan a trek in January, April, July, November or any other month of the year. What changes from season to season is mainly the weather, trail conditions, permit demand and, during selected months, the permit price.
Planning ahead is still extremely important. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) limits the number of visitors allowed to visit each habituated gorilla family. A standard gorilla trekking group normally consists of a maximum of eight visitors, and each permit is tied to a specific trekking date.
Demand can be particularly strong during the main dry-season travel periods from June to September and December to February. At Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we therefore recommend checking permit availability before confirming flights and accommodation, especially if you have fixed travel dates.
About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda is one of the world’s most important mountain gorilla habitats and one of Uganda’s most celebrated protected areas. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its exceptional biological diversity.
Uganda Wildlife Authority describes Bwindi as home to roughly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. The forest is also exceptionally rich in other wildlife, including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, forest elephants, numerous bird species, butterflies and an extraordinary variety of trees and ferns.
Bwindi covers more than 32,000 hectares and sits where lowland and montane forest ecosystems meet. This range of habitats is one reason the park supports such an impressive concentration of wildlife.
Mountain gorillas occur in only a very small part of Central and East Africa. Uganda offers gorilla trekking in both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, while Rwanda offers trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is also mountain gorilla habitat, but gorilla trekking there is currently closed until further notice. Travelers considering Uganda, Rwanda and Congo should always check the latest tourism and security information before planning around Virunga.

Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place in Bwindi?
Bwindi is divided into four official gorilla trekking sectors:
Buhoma
Ruhija
Rushaga
Nkuringo
Buhoma is the best-known and longest-established trekking area. It is particularly convenient for travelers combining Bwindi with the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Ruhija
is located on the eastern side of Bwindi and can also work very well for itineraries arriving from Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kabale.
Rushaga
is located in southern Bwindi and is one of the park’s major gorilla trekking areas. Its location also makes it convenient for travelers arriving from Kisoro, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or Kigali through the Uganda-Rwanda border crossings when normal border and immigration arrangements permit.
Nkuringo is also in southern Bwindi. The surrounding landscape is mountainous and spectacular, although some trekking routes can be physically demanding because of the area’s steep terrain.
No sector guarantees an easier or shorter trek on a particular day because gorillas move freely within their home ranges. Trek duration depends on where the assigned gorilla family is located, the terrain and the group’s walking pace.
How Much Does a Gorilla Trekking Permit Cost in Bwindi?
Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the official gorilla permit prices for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Standard Uganda Gorilla Permit Rates
| Visitor Category | Standard Gorilla Permit |
|---|---|
| Foreign Non-Residents (FNR) | USD 800 |
| Foreign Residents (FR) | USD 700 |
| Rest of Africa (ROA) | USD 500 |
| East African Community Citizens | UGX 300,000 |
These standard gorilla tracking rates remain the same under UWA’s revised tariff taking effect on 1 January 2027.
Low-Season Gorilla Permit Rates
Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced discounted gorilla trekking permits for selected low-season months. The discounted rates apply during April, May and November.
| Visitor Category | Low-Season Rate |
|---|---|
| Foreign Non-Residents | USD 600 |
| Foreign Residents | USD 500 |
UWA states that discounted low-season permits cannot be rescheduled, so travelers should be confident about their dates before purchasing them.
A standard gorilla permit allows the holder to join one gorilla trek and, once the assigned habituated gorilla family is located, normally spend up to one hour observing the gorillas under ranger supervision.
An Important 2026 Change to Gorilla Permit Booking
There has also been an important change in how Uganda gorilla permits are secured.
Effective from 1 March 2026, Uganda Wildlife Authority suspended the former seven-day unpaid reservation window. Previously, tour operators could temporarily hold available permits before payment was completed.
Under the new system, permits are secured when payment is completed at the time of booking. This makes early planning even more important, particularly during popular travel periods.
Need us to check availability?
Safari Vacations and Travel Services can check availability for your exact dates, organise your permit booking and coordinate your trekking sector with your accommodation and wider Uganda safari itinerary.
Does Rain Stop Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?
Normally, no. Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, so rain can occur at any time of year. Gorilla trekking generally continues during wet weather.
Heavy rainfall can make trails muddy, slippery and more physically challenging, which is why good hiking boots, rain protection and suitable clothing are important. Only exceptional circumstances affecting visitor safety or park operations would normally lead to an activity being changed or suspended.
The gorillas themselves remain in the forest throughout the year, so the rainy season does not mean that they disappear or migrate out of Bwindi.
When Is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is possible throughout the year. However, many travelers prefer the relatively drier periods from June to September and December to February.
During these periods, trails can be somewhat firmer and road travel around southwestern Uganda may be easier. These months are also popular, which means gorilla permits and well-located lodges may sell out earlier.
April, May and November are wetter months, but they can still be excellent times to trek. The forest is exceptionally green, there may be fewer visitors, and qualifying Foreign Non-Residents and Foreign Residents can benefit from UWA’s low-season gorilla permit rates.
Rainfall should therefore not automatically discourage you from traveling. The better choice depends on your budget, preferred weather, flexibility and overall Uganda safari itinerary.

How Long Does Daily gorilla trekking Bwindi Take?
The complete gorilla trekking experience can take several hours. Uganda Wildlife Authority advises that treks may last approximately two to seven hours depending on the location of the gorillas and conditions in the forest.
Your morning begins with registration and a ranger briefing at the appropriate sector headquarters. Visitors are then divided into trekking groups and assigned a habituated gorilla family.
The walk through the forest continues until trackers and ranger guides locate the assigned family. Once the gorillas are found, standard trekking allows approximately one hour with them.
Some groups may reach their gorillas comparatively quickly, while others may walk for several hours. For this reason, travelers should avoid planning a tight onward transfer immediately after the trek.
How Physically Demanding Is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi generally requires moderate fitness, although individual treks can range from relatively manageable to demanding.
Bwindi’s terrain includes steep slopes, forest paths, tangled vegetation and sections that become muddy after rain. Altitude and humidity may also make the trek feel more strenuous than an equivalent walk on level ground.
It is difficult to guarantee in advance whether a trek will be easy because the gorillas move from day to day.
Porters are highly recommended. In addition to carrying a backpack, water and camera equipment, a porter can assist on slippery or steep sections. Hiring a porter also directly supports people living around Bwindi through tourism-related employment.
Travelers with mobility concerns can discuss their needs with us in advance so that we can help plan the most suitable trekking arrangements available.
What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Packing correctly can make a significant difference to your comfort in the forest. We recommend:
Neutral outdoor colors such as khaki, brown, grey and green work particularly well in the forest.
Where to Stay Near Bwindi Forest
One of the most important parts of planning a Bwindi gorilla safari is matching your lodge with your allocated trekking sector. Bwindi is large and mountainous, and staying in the wrong sector can result in an unnecessarily long transfer early on trekking morning.
Southern Bwindi — Rushaga and Nkuringo
Accommodation around Rushaga includes properties such as Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Four Gorillas Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge, Gorilla Safari Lodge and other lodges serving southern Bwindi.
For Nkuringo, accommodation choices include Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, while some travelers also use properties around Lake Mutanda and Kisoro depending on their itinerary.
Northern and Eastern Bwindi — Buhoma and Ruhija
In Buhoma, accommodation ranges from community and mid-range properties to high-end forest lodges, including Buhoma Lodge and Bwindi Lodge.
Ruhija also has several accommodation options positioned for travelers trekking in the eastern sector.
Safari Vacations and Travel Services works with accommodation across different price ranges. More importantly, we match the lodge to the sector shown on your confirmed gorilla permit.
How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
By Road
Bwindi can be reached by road from Entebbe,
Kampala, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kabale and Kisoro. Driving from Kampala or Entebbe generally requires a full travel day.
By Air
Domestic flights provide a faster alternative. Kihihi Airstrip is commonly used for Buhoma and northern Bwindi, while Kisoro Airstrip serves Rushaga, Nkuringo and southern Bwindi.
After landing, travelers continue by road in a 4×4 vehicle to their lodge. Safari Vacations and Travel Services can arrange both domestic flights and private airstrip transfers as part of a complete gorilla safari.
Can I Trek Gorillas in Bwindi on a Weekend or Public Holiday?
Yes. Gorilla trekking is not restricted to ordinary working days. Treks are organised throughout the year, including weekends and public holidays, provided you have a valid permit for the date and normal park operations are taking place.
The important issue is not whether your date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, but whether permits are still available for the sector and date you want.
Can I Book a Gorilla Permit at the Last Minute?
It may sometimes be possible if permits remain available, but relying on last-minute availability is risky.
This is especially important following UWA’s March 2026 change to the permit reservation system. Permits now have to be secured through payment rather than being held under the previous seven-day unpaid reservation arrangement.
If your travel dates are fixed, it is better to check permit availability before making non-refundable arrangements elsewhere in your trip.
