A gorilla permit is simply a document that allows you to get access to a gorilla family in the jungle for an hour’s experience however the tracking can take between 30 to a quarter of the day, and the activity is moderated by different mandated authorities in countries where the activity is done whereby in Uganda it’s issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority, for Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Mgahinga national park and Rwanda development board for Volcanoes national park in Rwanda respectively.
How much does gorilla trekking cost?
Apparently, gorilla trekking in Uganda costs $600 and $1500 for habituation but trekking costs will increase by $100 by 1st July 2020 and in Rwanda, the cost for the permit costs $1500, $500 for foreign residents with working permits, and sh250, 000 for East African Citizens, note that a single permit is issued to once to one person per day to trek in the gazetted trekking points. Therefore you can secure your permits early enough through your trusted tour operators who will offer you enough gorilla tracking information un to your satisfaction.
Another hint on gorilla tracking information is that if you want to do Gorilla Trekking you must have a valid Gorilla trekking Permit and in order to book your gorilla trekking permit, you will have to provide your name, nationality, passport number, and date of birth. For this case, you should note that Gorilla trekking permits cannot be handled in the possession of another person so you will have to show your passport and identification documents at the pre-trekking briefing
Due to the fact that we book gorilla permits in the absence of our clients who mostly book in advance, we have to scan and send them a copy but the originals have to be picked and sent to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park since they will be required on the very trekking day
After blocking the permit, it’s colored red showing that it’s no longer available for booking, the system then releases an invoice to the travel operator requesting for permits. A travel agent only deposits on the permit and can finish the permanent within seven days
Online gorilla tracking information upon booking is another avenue where you can choose to purchase the permits by yourself and this only requires you to contact the conservation headquarters of respective countries by email or phone contact with your preferred dates, months, and years you would like to make your adventure so that they can check for availability of permits in the system than using a local based tour operator however the process may be a little time consuming and will require you to make extra follow up on your case due to bureaucracy. Therefore we advise you to use a trusted local tour operator who has been in the system and is well recommendable by trip advisor or safari bookings to secure your permits and other necessary services for your safari.
What are the rules and procedures for Gorilla Tracking?
Remember that mountain gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases. The following rules are ways to minimize the risk your visit might pose to them:
A maximum number of 8 visitors are allowed to visit habituated families that is 4 individuals per group
General health regulations
Respect the limits imposed on the number of visitors allowed with the gorillas each day. This minimizes the risk of disease transmission and stress to the group. If you are feeling ill, or you are carrying a contagious disease, volunteer to stay behind. An alternate visit will be arranged for you, or you will be refunded your money.
If you feel the urge to cough or sneeze when you are near the gorillas, please turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth in order to minimize the spread of bacteria or viruses. Always stay 7 meters (21 feet) away from the gorillas. This is to protect them from catching human diseases. Do not leave any rubbish (eg. food wrappers) in the park; foreign items can harbor diseases or other contaminants. If you need to go to the toilet while in the forest, please ask the guide to dig you a hole with his panga. Make sure the hole is 30 cm deep and fill it in when you are finished.
Gorilla tracking information When you encounter gorillas
A 7-meter (21 feet) distance should be tried to be observed at all times from the gorillas. The further back you are, the more relaxed the group will be. You must stay in a tight group when you are near the gorillas. Keep your voice down at all times. However, it is okay to ask the guide questions. Do not smoke, drink, or eat when you are near the gorillas. Eating or drinking inevitably will increase the risk of food/drink morsels/droplets falling, which could increase the risk of transmission of diseases.
Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guide’s example (crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes, and wait for the animals to pass). Do not attempt to run away because that will increase the risk. Flash photography is not permitted! When taking pictures move slowly and carefully. Do not touch the gorillas. They are wild animals. The maximum time you can spend with the gorillas is one hour. However, if the gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide will finish the visit early. After the visit keep your voice down until you are 200 meters away from the gorillas.
