Animals to Look Out For in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Animals to Look Out For in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Queen Elizabeth National Park sits in the heart of Uganda, and it delivers one of Africa’s most thrilling wildlife experiences. The park stretches across diverse landscapes — open savannahs, lush forests, steaming crater lakes, and winding waterways — giving animals a wide variety of habitats to thrive in. In addition to 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species recorded within its boundaries, visitors can expect remarkable encounters at every turn. Whether you book a morning game drive, a sunset boat cruise, or a forest trek, this park rewards every type of safari traveller.

    Iconic Predators Worth Seeking Out

The park’s most celebrated residents are its tree-climbing lions. Unlike lions anywhere else in Africa, these big cats climb high into giant fig and acacia trees, where they rest, survey their territory, and occasionally nap through the afternoon heat. Guides take visitors south to the Ishasha Sector specifically to find them stretched out along the low branches — a genuinely unforgettable image. No other safari destination in East Africa offers this experience so reliably.

Leopards also roam the park, though spotting one takes patience. These solitary cats move quietly and stay well camouflaged in the tree cover of the Kasenyi Plains. However, nocturnal game drives on the Mweya Peninsula give travellers a strong chance of seeing one in the beam of a spotlight. Spotted hyenas complete the predator lineup. Their eerie calls echo across the Kasenyi savannah after dark, and patient visitors often watch them scavenge with surprising efficiency.

    Big Game and Large Herbivores

Animals to Look Out For in Queen Elizabeth National Park. African bush elephants roam throughout the park in large family groups, and guides locate them without much effort. Thousands of elephants move freely between the plains and the forests, making sightings both reliable and spectacular. Cape buffaloes form equally impressive gatherings, particularly near water sources where massive herds cool off together.

Hippopotamuses deserve special attention. Queen Elizabeth National Park holds one of the densest hippo populations on the entire continent. During the day, thousands of these enormous animals wallow side by side in the waterways, barely moving. Visitors who board a boat safari along the Kasinga Channel get extraordinarily close views of hippos, often within metres of the vessel. It stands as one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Africa, and it genuinely requires no luck at all — the hippos are simply always there.

Giant forest hogs also make an appearance for those paying close attention. These are the largest wild pigs on earth, and they forage along forest edges and across the Mweya Peninsula. Most visitors walk right past them, distracted by the larger game nearby.

    Primates: A Rare Highlight

Queen Elizabeth National Park offers two exceptional primate experiences that set it apart from other safari destinations. And deep inside Kyambura Gorge, a habituated community of chimpanzees lives within a dramatic, sunken rainforest. Therefore trained guides lead small groups down into the gorge to track these animals on foot. Watching chimpanzees move through the trees, communicate with each other, and interact as a family group is a genuinely moving encounter — and it ranks among the highlights of any Uganda safari itinerary.

Beyond chimpanzees, the forests of Maramagambo and the edges of Kyambura hold black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and large troops of olive baboons. Look up into the canopy, and these animals appear almost immediately.

    Savannah Grazers and Aquatic Life

Uganda kobs give the savannah a warm, amber glow. These beautifully horned antelopes serve as Uganda’s national animal, and the park holds large populations of them. Lion prides target kobs as their primary prey, so the areas where kobs gather in greatest numbers — particularly the Kasenyi Plains — also produce the best lion sightings during morning drives.

Topis and defassa waterbucks add variety to the grazing herds. Topis are fast and alert, commonly seen in the Ishasha plains, while waterbucks stay reliably close to the waterways throughout the year. On the banks of those same waterways, large Nile crocodiles sun themselves with their mouths open, motionless for hours. The Kasinga Channel boat safari brings visitors within easy viewing distance of these ancient reptiles, and they appear at almost every bend in the water.

Birds That Stop You in Your Tracks

Animals to Look Out For in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park’s bird diversity alone justifies a dedicated safari. The grey-crowned crane — Uganda’s national bird — wades gracefully through the marshy wetlands, and travellers encounter it regularly. However, it is the shoebill stork that generates the greatest excitement among serious birdwatchers. This massive, prehistoric-looking bird stands almost motionless in the swampy fringes of the park, watching for fish with extraordinary patience. A shoebill sighting ranks as a bucket-list moment for global birding enthusiasts, and Queen Elizabeth gives travellers a genuine shot at finding one.

Seasonally, thousands of flamingos gather around the crater lakes, turning the water an extraordinary shade of pink. Meanwhile, African fish eagles announce themselves long before they appear — their loud, iconic call carries across the waterways just before they dive to hunt.

    Where to Focus Your Time

To get the most out of your visit, prioritise four areas. Start with a boat safari along the Kasinga Channel for guaranteed hippo and crocodile sightings. Spend a morning on the Kasenyi Plains for lions and buffalo herds. Drive south to Ishasha for the tree-climbing lions. And set aside at least a half day for a chimpanzee trek into Kyambura Gorge.

One important note: Queen Elizabeth National Park does not have giraffes, zebras, rhinos, or impalas. Manage expectations accordingly — and enjoy the extraordinary wildlife that genuinely does live here.
