Named after the Kagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into Lake Ihema and several smaller lakes, the park covers approximately 1,122 square kilometers in the northeastern part of the country, bordering Tanzania. In 1934, officials established Akagera National Park primarily to conserve wildlife. Following periods of conflict that severely impacted the park’s wildlife, conservationists reintroduced key species, including black rhinos from Tanzania and lions from South Africa. Today, the park hosts all of Africa’s Big Five. Local travel agencies arrange game drives in the morning and evening, with options for full-day safaris. In addition to the Big Five, visitors may encounter various other animals such as bushbucks, topis, oribis, waterbucks, roan antelopes, duikers, klipspringers, impalas, and the world’s largest antelope—the Cape eland. Primate species like olive baboons and vervet monkeys can also be spotted during night drives.

Bird Watching Experience

Akagera is a premier destination for birdwatching enthusiasts, boasting over 500 bird species, including both endemic and migratory birds. You can find rare species here, including the shoebill stork, red-faced barbets, papyrus gonolek, giant kingfisher, African darter, African wattled plover, grey crowned crane, and Senegal lapwing.

Boat Cruise

A boat cruise on Lake Ihema or other nearby lakes offers a refreshing way to explore the park. Scheduled trips are available in the morning, afternoon, and at sunset. This activity allows visitors to enjoy the serene atmosphere while observing wildlife such as hippos and Nile crocodiles along the water’s edge. Birdwatching from the boat also provides opportunities to see various aquatic bird species.

Accessing Akagera National Park

Visitors can also access Akagera National Park by road or air transport. The drive from Kigali takes about 2-3 hours, with entry through the southern gate, as the northern gate currently serves only for exits. For those preferring air travel, charter flights are available through Akagera Aviation.
