Is Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park Safe?

How is Safety and Security Guaranteed During Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park?
Is Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest National Park Safe? Kibale National Park is the leading destination for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, with more than 1,500 chimpanzees. Pronounced as “Chibale,” this tropical rainforest is located in the western region of Uganda. It is home to numerous primates, which is why it is popular as the primate capital.
It is also among the most frequently visited parks in Uganda, offering clear views of the Rwenzori ranges, over 3,000 bird species, and four chimpanzee-habituated families. Although chimpanzee trekking is the highlight activity in Kibale, visitors can also enjoy birdwatching, nature walks, and habituation.
The question of safety is common, and the answer is that trekking is very secure. This is because of strict measures that have been put in place not only to protect the chimpanzees from extinction but also to guarantee the safety of trekkers.
Safety Measures in Place
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is safe because of the regulations set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Children below 12 years of age are not permitted to trek; a distance of seven meters must always be maintained from the chimpanzees, and visitors are not allowed to join the trek if they are sick, especially with contagious illnesses such as flu or cough. Noise must be minimized, flash photography is prohibited, and eating in front of chimpanzees is not allowed.
In addition to these guidelines, other arrangements further ensure security. Professional guides always lead the treks. With years of experience, they are knowledgeable about the park and familiar with chimpanzee behavior, ensuring trekkers remain safe and informed. Security checks at the park gate prevent visitors from carrying dangerous items such as knives or firearms, and armed rangers provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority escort every trek to safeguard visitors from any possible wildlife threats.
Packing for Safety and Comfort
Carrying the right gear is crucial for a safe and comfortable trek. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers help protect against insect bites and scratches, with neutral colors such as brown, green, or khaki recommended for blending into the forest. Waterproof, ankle-length hiking boots with a strong grip are essential, and thick socks with gaiters provide added protection. Insect repellent, sunscreen, a rain jacket, garden gloves, a first aid kit, water, snacks, binoculars, and a camera are all useful for the experience.
How to Arrange and Book a Chimpanzee Trek in Kibale
You can book Chimpanzee trekking and habituation permits directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can also book through a trusted tour operator. However, the process is much simpler and faster when done with a reliable tour operator, as booking directly with UWA can often be lengthy and complicated.
Once you contact us, we request your details, including your name and your preferred dates for trekking, so that we can check the availability of permits. After confirming availability, we send you an email and guide you through the next step, which is payment for the permit. It is important to note that no booking will be confirmed without full payment. For security, you must make all transactions using the company’s official bank details, never a personal account. Once we receive payment confirmation, we immediately purchase the permit and provide you with a soft copy.
After securing the permit, the next stage involves arranging other parts of your safari. These include transport, accommodation, and deciding how many days you wish to spend on the trek. You can organize these services with us. However, it is important to remember that their costs are separate from the permit fee.
Cost of Chimpanzee Trekking Permits
The current cost of trekking permits in Kibale varies depending on the category of the visitor. For foreign non-residents, the chimpanzee trekking permit is priced at 250 USD per person. It also costs $200 for foreign residents and Ugx180,000 for East African citizens.
For the chimpanzee habituation permit, the price is slightly higher since it allows visitors to spend more time with the chimpanzees. Both foreign residents and foreign non-residents pay 300 USD per person, whereas East African citizens are required to pay 300,000 UGX per person.
It is important to note that when paying for a chimpanzee permit, you are only entitled to purchase one type at a time. This means you can either choose a regular chimpanzee trekking permit or a habituation permit, but not both simultaneously. However, you can buy 2 different types for different days.
Guidelines for purchasing the chimpanzee trekking permit
You must book permits early. Tourists who book six months in advance must pay at least 50% of the total cost, with the remaining balance cleared 90 days before the trek date.
Failure to pay the balance before the 90-day deadline results in permit cancellation, with no refunds.
A 100% payment must be made for the permit to be fully booked and confirmed.
Once purchased, permits cannot be changed. For example, you cannot switch from a regular trek permit to a habituation permit.
Rescheduling is possible within 15 days from the original booking date.
Only one reschedule is permitted. Any additional reschedule will attract a surcharge of 25% on the original permit cost.
All online payments must be completed within 72 hours of the initial booking.
Individuals below 12 years of age can not go chimpanzee trekking.
Accessing Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park can be accessed by road or air. By road, the Kampala–Fort Portal route takes about 4 to 5 hours. Meanwhile, the Kampala–Mbarara–Kasese highway also leads to the park. For air travel, charter flights can be arranged from Kajjansi Airstrip or Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airstrip. These are followed by a short road transfer to the park.
Best Time to Trek
The best time to go chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is during the dry season, which runs from December to February and again from June to August. These months offer clearer trails and better visibility, making it easier to spot the chimpanzees. However, trekking is still possible in the wetter months of March to May and October to November, though visitors should be prepared for slippery paths and muddier conditions.
