Buhoma is the Northern sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park and doubles as the first area to have started gorilla tourism in Uganda and the area is located just 2 hours from south of Elizabeth national park which is famous for tree-climbing lions and an hour from Kihihi airstrip making it one of the top places to trek mountain gorillas in Uganda.
The area is home to about 6 gorilla families of Muyambi, Mubare, Rushegura, Katwe, Habinyanja, and Binyindo.
Due to the high demand for gorilla permits, this area is usually booked up and the next option is to trek gorillas in the eastern part of Bwindi impenetrable which is located two hours from the famous Lake Bunyonyi located in Kabale, and its one of the best adventure destinations famous for boat safaris and history of the islands.
Ruhija is a home to about 4 gorilla groups of Bitukura, Mukiza, Oruzogo and Kyaguliro.
The eastern Bwindi Impenetrable Nation Park is yet less developed in terms of accommodation and makes it easy to stay in Buhoma and take the two-hour drive in the morning to reach the starting point for gorilla trekking.
Second limited gorilla permits can make it difficult to find gorilla permits in the North leaving us with the second chance of securing gorilla permits from the east.
Drive from Buhoma to Ruhija sector
This is one of the best views on a drive-around Bwindi impenetrable national park as the eastern part of the forest sits about 2600 meters above sea level and you literally higher and the views of the valley are dramatic.
The drive usually starts at 6 am from Buhoma and arriving in Ruhija arriving just in time for gorilla briefing.
Buhoma provides both budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation and some of the lodges include sanctuary gorilla forest camp, Buhoma lodge, Buhoma community rest camp, Buhoma haven lodge, trekkers safari lodge, and Engagi lodge and Ride4women.
The best time for gorilla trekking in the eastern Bwindi impenetrable national park is during the dry season from June to September and from December to February however the other months are also open for gorilla trekking but rains may cause inconveniences sometimes.
