The trail to the Munyaga forest waterfall walk is an approximately 3 hour’s walk to and from given the energy level of the hikers and begins at the park headquarters of Bwindi located in the Buhoma area with a briefing. The trek can be done after a gorilla safari in Bwindi Forest though most prefer to take it early in the morning. The trail is characterized by great sceneries and sightings! As you make the journey through the pristine tropical montane forest watch out for the numerous bird species, that entertain you with magical songs from some of the 375 species that could be found here like the Kivu Ground Thrush, Short-Tailed Warbler, Blue-Headed Sunbird, Red-Faced Woodland Warbler, the Yellow-Eyed, Yellow Footed and Chapin’s Flycatcher among which are some of the Albertine rift endemics not easily missed on this hike.
The trail ascends through the evergreen and montane marshes that intertwine across the forest floor all the way up making it hard to penetrate but armed with a walking stick the impenetrable forest will be more than possible to conquer.
For Bird lovers, hikers and waterfalls lovers this walk will give you an excellent feeling of the forest as you will encounter numerous bird species, some wildlife like the monkeys, duikers, and sometimes you will hear the Wild chimpanzees.
This walk takes you through the forest trail which was originally a road connecting northern Bwindi and southern Bwindi as the main trade route before turning off into the thick jungle so there you will need to pair of good hiking shoes, walking stick, rain gear, long pants,long-sleeved shirt, and drinking water.
Bwindi being a rain forest usually afternoons are cloudy and if people have the time it’s best to do the walk in the morning hours and this will make your chances of escaping rainfall higher.
Bwindi forest is usually at its best during the dry months of June to August and from December to February when there is a very low rainfall received in the area
It’s very important to note that the price of the walk is cheaper when you do it on the same day as the gorilla trekking as you will still have access to the forest using your gorilla trekking permit, so when you do the walk on the day of gorilla trek you will be charged $30 and if you do it on a different day you will pay $70.
