Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is Located 23 km offshore from Entebbe, this 100 acres forested island is a safe haven for juvenile/ orphaned chimpanzees that are free to enjoy the natural habitat on this wonderful island. The place hosts chimps that have been rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Many being rescued from poachers and are unlikely to survive reintroduction to the wild. The entire place is coordinated and managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust. CSWCT is a partnership with six organizations committed to the welfare and conservation of wildlife where they are being rehabilitated as much as possible on this thickly forested island.
From the Entebbe international airport you drive to Entebbe and take a boat ride 23km from Entebbe to Ngamba Islands and spend time with orphaned Chimps which were rescued from captivity and offered protection on the Island Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to 49 orphaned chimps rescued from throughout Uganda.
Ngamba island is home to a variety of plants and tree species, wild water and forest bird species, beautiful but unique reptile species such as snakes and lizard varieties plus a beautiful lake scenery all available to make your safari a great memory, enjoy lunch swimming on the lake, viewing the neighboring villages, birdwatching, sunbathe all in one place.
There are only 2 shifts in which the boats cruise visitors to the island-the 9-10 and the 12-1pm (local time) setting off and their scheduled time for their feeding which is at 11:00 am and 3:00pm each day with good photographic opportunities.
Here, you’ll help with daily caregiving, observe chimpanzee behavior, look for ways to enrich chimpanzee behavior and improve the island’s infrastructure. A fund to honor the memory of fallen alpha male, Mika has been set up, Mika was a male chimpanzee, estimated to have been born in 1992 and occupied the island since 198 after being rescued by an Egyptian Circus in kampala. The keepers nicknamed him ‘city-boy’ because they say he was very ‘street wise’, loved commotion
Integration program which is aimed at bringing together orphaned chimpanzee at the island is another fruitful activity which has as well been developed and progressed as these primates live together depending on their level of trauma experienced before being captive at the sanctuary and getting them to new environment. Therefore giving them support through different ways like holding them and teaching them to adopt to life in the forest in one amazing experience on this beautiful island.
Guests have the opportunity to have a morning forest walk with some of the juvenile chimps. This walk allows for direct contact with the animals
