Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors include; Buhoma in the north, Nkuringo in the south, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga in the south. All these sectors have quite different gorilla groups which range between 7-10 with family members ranging between 5-25.
When you book a gorilla trekking experience, you will spend an hour with the primates in their natural habitat before returning to the park headquarters. During this time, you will have the opportunity for a close encounter with the primates, while maintaining a distance of 7 meters. Ask your guide questions, take notes, and capture plenty of pictures to document your experience and share with others.
Gorilla habituation is a process wherein gorillas are acclimated to human presence upon encountering them. Researchers use this process to understand how humans should interact with these primates in the forest without resorting to violence. This habituation process spans 2-3 years. It’s this process that brought about the most outlined dos and don’ts shared with clients at park headquarters before proceeding with the search for the primates in the jungle.
Uganda is the only place where you can enjoy the gorilla habituation experience. In the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, two gorilla families—Bikini and Bushaho—are undergoing the habituation process. This allows visitors to spend four extra hours with the primates on the trek and participate in various activities under the guidance of a researcher and an armed ranger guide. To customize both gorilla trekking and habituation for your safari, it is essential to book four to five months in advance to ensure availability.
The Batwa people, commonly known as pygmies, are believed to have originated from the Ituri forest in Congo. This community is located in Bunyonyi, Mgahinga National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Moreover, conservation efforts to protect the Afro-montane forest and the primates that reside within it resulted in the resettlement of the Batwa people outside the park, who used to inhabit the forest as their home. From there, they receive support to enhance their livelihoods.
