Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s premier safari destinations famous for gorilla trekking, Mountain gorillas are one of Africa’s endangered gorilla species living in the high altitudes southwest of the country’s main capital Kampala.
The park was open to tourism back in 1991 when gorilla habituation started North of the rainforest in the Buhoma gorilla region and there was one group by 1993 named Mubare and the gorilla numbers have increased in the park making it a habitat for half of the mountain gorilla population currently located in four gorilla trekking zones of Buhoma in the North, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south all open for gorilla tourism.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located over 450kms from the main capital Kampala and the drive can take between 8-11 hours and advisable in a 4×4 safari vehicle.
Clients can fly from Entebbe to either Kisoro located south of the rainforest and Kihihi which is located north of the rainforest and the flight from Entebbe to either of the airstrips is 1-2 hours depending on the weather and its one of the best ways to access the rainforest for your gorilla trekking experience in Uganda.
We recommend flying in to Kihihi airstrip and trekking gorillas in Buhoma or region as the drive distance between the airstrip and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is 1-1.5 hours via a reasonable road conditions during dry seasons.
Buhoma is a home to over 4 gorilla families that are habituated and are open for clients to trek in the rain forest one of Africa’s high land standing rainforests sitting at the edge of the Great Rift Valley.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is considered an all year round activity however the impact of rainfall can be an issue as the trails can be slippery making hiking difficult but it’s at the same time the green season for wildlife viewing in Uganda and the dry seasons runs from June to September and from December to February and those are the best times of the year to see the gorillas.
