Baker’s Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park

Baker’s Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park sits on the southern bank of the River Nile. It is one of Uganda’s finest luxury lodges. The lodge takes its name from Sir Samuel Baker, the English explorer who first saw and named Murchison Falls. Because it sits close to the Nile, the lodge draws hippos, elephants, and hundreds of bird species right to its doorstep. Whether you travel for wildlife, adventure, or simply to rest in nature, Baker’s Lodge gives you a rich and rewarding experience in the heart of one of Africa’s greatest parks.
Where Is Baker’s Lodge?
Baker’s Lodge stands inside Murchison Falls National Park, on the southern bank of the mighty River Nile. The park itself sits in northwestern Uganda and covers a vast area of savannah, riverine forest, and wetlands. The lodge sits just outside the park boundary, yet wildlife moves freely around it. As a result, guests often wake up to elephants browsing nearby or hippos grazing on the lawn at night. The setting alone makes the lodge worth visiting.
How to Get There by Road
Reaching Baker’s Lodge by road is straightforward. First, you leave Kampala or Entebbe and drive north toward Gulu. Then, at the Kafu River junction, you turn off toward Masindi town. Once you enter Masindi, you turn left opposite the second Shell fuel station. After that, you follow the Uganda Wildlife Authority signposts along a murram road to the Kichumbanyobo gate of Murchison Falls National Park. From there, the road takes you through the Kanyo-Pabidi section of Budongo Forest. Finally, you reach the Paraa ferry point. You cross the ferry and drive a short distance to Baker’s Lodge on the southern bank.
The road journey from Kampala takes roughly five to six hours. However, road conditions can vary by season, so it helps to plan accordingly. The drive itself is scenic and passes through forests, farmland, and open savannah.
How to Get There by Air
Flying to Baker’s Lodge saves you several hours of driving. Scheduled and charter flights land at Bugungu airstrip, which sits on the southern bank of the Nile. From Bugungu, the lodge is only a 20-minute drive away. Alternatively, flights land at Pakuba airstrip on the northern bank. From Pakuba, the drive to the lodge takes between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on road conditions and ferry timings. Either way, flying gives you a quick and comfortable way to start your stay.
Room Rates and Seasons
Baker’s Lodge offers rates that suit different budgets and travel seasons. During the Low Season, international rates start from USD 240 per adult per night, sharing a double or twin room. The Low Season covers April, May, and November. The Shoulder Season includes March, June, and October. The High Season runs through January, February, July, August, September, and December. Rates are based on full board, half board, or bed and breakfast packages. Therefore, you choose the meal plan that fits your travel style.
It is important to note that rates exclude Murchison Falls National Park fees, premium drinks, non-house drinks, and optional activities. As a result, you should budget for these extras when planning your trip.
Activities at Baker’s Lodge
Baker’s Lodge offers a wide range of activities. Consequently, you will never run short of things to do during your stay. Whether you prefer exciting game drives or peaceful boat cruises, the lodge has something for every type of traveler.
Game Drives
Game drives in Murchison Falls National Park mainly take place on the northern bank of the Nile. Each morning, you drive to the Paraa ferry and cross to the northern side. Once across, your guide takes you deep into the park in search of wildlife. During the drive, you can spot elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, leopards, and hyenas. Additionally, the northern bank holds large herds of Uganda kob and Jackson’s hartebeest. The open savannah makes it easy to see animals at close range. Most game drives last half a day, though full-day options are also available.
Boat Cruise to Murchison Falls
The boat cruise to Murchison Falls is one of the most popular activities at the lodge. Both scheduled and private trips run daily. The cruise takes you upstream along the Nile to the base of the falls. Along the way, you pass large pods of hippos basking in the shallows. You also spot crocodiles lining the riverbanks and a wide variety of birds perched in the trees above. At the end of the journey, the falls come into full view. You watch the entire Nile River force itself through a narrow gap of just eight meters — a truly powerful sight.
Furthermore, you can combine the boat cruise with a hike to the top of the falls or a sunset cruise in the evening. This makes for a full and varied day out on the water.
Boat Cruise to the Victoria Nile Delta
In addition to the falls cruise, the lodge also runs daily boat trips to the Victoria Nile Delta. The delta lies 17 kilometers downstream from Baker’s Lodge. The journey gives you excellent wildlife viewing along the way. Once you reach the delta, you enter a rich wetland habitat that supports a unique range of birds. In particular, the delta is famous for the shoebill stork, one of Africa’s most sought-after birds. Papyrus endemic species also thrive in this area. For early risers, a special “breakfast on board” option is available on morning trips, subject to minimum numbers.
Hiking to the Top of Murchison Falls
For those who enjoy walking, the hike to the top of Murchison Falls is a must. The trail takes you up through the gorge, offering different views of the falls at every level. As you climb higher, the roar of the water grows louder. At the summit, you stand at the edge of the narrow chasm and watch the Nile squeeze through with enormous force. The sight and sound of the falls from the top is unlike anything else in Uganda. Guides lead the hike and point out birds and plants along the trail.
Sport Fishing
The Nile River at Murchison Falls offers outstanding sport fishing. Local fishing guides take you out on the river and help you target large Nile perch, one of the biggest freshwater fish in the world. Several species of catfish also live in these waters. The lodge operates a strict catch-and-release system to protect the river’s fish population. As a result, guests enjoy the thrill of the catch while helping to preserve the ecosystem for future visitors.
Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest
Chimpanzee trekking takes place in Budongo Forest, one of Uganda’s largest and most important forests. From Baker’s Lodge, the drive to Budongo takes about one hour. Trekking sessions run in both the morning and the afternoon. Experienced trackers lead you through the forest until you find the chimps. Once located, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, groom, and interact with each other. Budongo Forest is home to one of the largest chimpanzee communities in Uganda, so sightings are generally reliable. Besides chimpanzees, the forest also supports over 360 bird species and other primates.
Hot Air Ballooning
For a truly special experience, hot air ballooning over Murchison Falls National Park is hard to beat. Balloon flights depart early in the morning from the Pakuba area on the northern bank of the park. As the balloon rises at dawn, you drift silently over the savannah. Below, you can see herds of elephants, buffalo, and antelopes moving across the plains. The golden morning light makes the landscape look spectacular. The flight gives you a completely different perspective of the park and creates memories that last a lifetime.
