Nkuringo gorilla Region is one of the sectors in Bwindi impenetrable national park where clients can enjoy gorilla trekking experiences and the region is located at the tip of the forest Overlooking DRC and Kisoro town, the region provides one of the breathtaking views of the impenetrable forest, the region is also located close to Lake Mutanda which is one of the best places for relaxing.
Gorilla trekking is one of the dominant activities attracting tourists to this region but after gorilla, trekking clients can participate in other activities.
Nkuringo trekking is renowned as one of the most demanding and extraordinary experiences. Travelers engage in rigorous hiking to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, with the hike potentially lasting between 4 to 9 hours.
Visiting the Batwa
The Batwa community now residing outside the national park, can be visited. They are eager to demonstrate their traditional forest practices.
Buniga forest walk
Buniga is a protected forest near the park headquarters and it’s home to monkeys, duikers and birdlife so the traveller can take a walk on this trail.
Visiting the communities after gorilla trekking can be great and visiting the community schools nearby is a must activity while in Nkuringo.
Currently, the Nkuringo gorilla sector is home to three gorilla families the Nkuringo gorilla family, the Bushaho gorilla family, and the Christmas gorilla family.
Depending on where you are the easiest way to get to Nkuringo gorilla area is by flying into Kisoro Airstrip and drive for two hours to the gorilla starting point or travellers can also fly into Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport and take the 5-6 hours’ drive through Cyanika or Katuna border points and if you’re in Kampala or Entebbe you will need between 9-10 hours by road.
There many lodge options in Nkuringo gorilla region and also around the areas surrounding areas some of the lodges to consider include Clouds mountain gorilla lodge, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge and Luxury Gorilla heights lodge or clients can stay at Lake Mutanda in lodges like Chameleon hill or Lake Mutanda resort and take the 1.5-hour drive to the gorilla starting point.
